What does everyone think?

Personally he missed Geelongs needs. He has us Drafting 2 key forwars, a Ruck, a medium defender and a running HBFer.

Surely we will take atleast one tall defender.

Can't see how we wouldn't take Collier if he is there at 17. It would seem stupid to miss out on that.

Happy with Bellchambers if we got him that late,

Would also swap Simpson with the two after him in Gourdis or Gaetner.

I can only assume that if Geelong take Notte at 17 they are doing it for 2 reasons:

1. They rate him the best player at that stage in the draft
2. They think they can develop him as a backman

The selection of Scott Simpson has me more perplexed. Just can't see the reason for us drafting him.

Agreed re simpson, especially withGaetner a good developing tall defender and Gourdis a realy talented forward after him.

If we were after a forward surely Gourdis would be the one we take

I like the sound of Tony Notte. We are in the position to take a real curve-ball of a draft pick, and with Notte it seems that that's exactly what it is!

From reading what Burgan says about Notte:
Burgan Draft said:
17 – GEELONG – TONY NOTTE

Swan Districts, WA, Tall forward, April 15 1990, 194.5cm, 71.5kg

Geelong has its eye firmly on Notte. He is highly rated among the recruiting fraternity, with one believing he has the potential to be the best player from this draft. It would be an interesting scenario if Patrick Dangerfield fell, as he had been earmarked at No.17 until he kept climbing up the order. Scott Selwood also seems unlikely to last until this pick. Don't discount Notte for Sydney (No.11) or Melbourne (No.14). West Coast is also keen but would have to claim him at No.13 – he won't last to No.20 or No.22 now.

Bio: A lightly built tall forward with excellent hands. Strong both in the air and below his knees. He is quick and agile for a player of his size and capable of playing as a key back. Excellent on the lead and a good reader of the play. He is a graduate of the 2006/07 AIS-AFL Academy and was a member of the squad that toured South Africa in April. From Upper Swan FC.
And reading on the drafts & trading board, it could be a real pay-off 3 years down the track.

And I think we will draft a tall forward, because with Mooney being 28/29 & NAblett being some what of an iffy sort of player, we'll need a KPF soon enough.

Maybe it is a good idea for a massive risk. Remember, massive risks, although are dangerous in their nature, result in massive pay-offs. And we've got one of the best in the business in Stephen Wells. If he likes Notte, then I trust that.

refer to the use of "one" which means 15 others don't think that. For all we know that one is Greg Miller :p

Agreed that we need a key forward, however with the plethora of talented tall defenders in this draft we'd be silly not to set our stocks up for the next 10years.

Next year i wouldn't mind us taking a key forward with our first pick.

We also have Lonergan in the wings to.

I don't mind his Geelong selections to much. Notte is actually starting to grow on me. I wouldn't be disappointed if we got him with our first pick. So much scope for improvement. Interesting to see that one of the recruiters think he could end up being the best player in the draft! That would probably suggest he won't be available by our pick.

Not sure about Simpson though. There is no way in hell I'd pick Simpson before Gaertner.

Bellchambers at 44 is an absolute bargain! If that happens I'll be stoked!:thumbsu: I had a feeling he'd put Thompson at pick 50.

how would he know which clubs have shown interest in who? surely if we interviewed these kids at draft camp that is not his only source. im sure we interviewed plenty then. cant see us drafting tall forwards, backs yes and maybe a project ruckman. it does seem that from about pick 12 onqards its anyones guess who will go for who. can only assume all clubs will come out saying how well they did.

last year a guy i worked with went to the draft, rand the afl and got a seat behind the carlton table. says was very interesting being there. he also rang stephen wells and was surprised how open he was about their strategies.

It really doesn't matter if they are KP forwards or backs at TAC cup level. If we draft a 192-195cm player it will be with an eye towards grooming them as a backmen in my opinion. In saying that it is not like we have a lot of options as far as KP forwards go. We have Mooney, N.Ablett and Hawkins with Lonergan who can go forward or back (Probably better back). It's not like we a carrying a lot of depth there it is just that all the KP's we do have are quality.

Notte or Dangerfield wouldn't surprise with our first oick. Dangerfield is concerntrating on school in 08 so would possibly play a VFL match here and there and that would be it. Notte, on the other hand would make Makie look like Mr Universe so he will certainly have time on his side.

We need to remember that in most circumstances our draftees are going to take some time to develop. We hit the jackpot last year with Selwood, Hawkins & (without his injuries) Djerrkura all having the size to cope with AFL footy in their first year but in most drafts, this certainly isn't the case.

After the year we've had and no major deficiencies, you can see why Wells & Co may opt for a longer term proposition.

Pretty happy with Notte. I had us taking him at #34 in my phantom, and I still think that #17 is on the high side for him, but I do rate him very highly and would love to see him in the blue and white hoops.

Agree with the others that Simpson after Notte doesn't really make sense, unless they would be thinking of turning Notte into a defender but I think he's a natural forward and that is where he would play his best footy. Simpson is a forward.

Very happy with Bellchambers at 44. We need a ruck and he's top three in that category in this draft.

Happy with Thompson at #50 too.

So overall not bad except for one too many tall forwards.

I see people are suggesting Kangars and Gaertner rather than Simpson. I think either would be a good pick up for us at #34, but I'm not sure thats the way we would go. Both are absolute freak athletes first and footballers a distant second. If they learn to play the game properly they could both be anything, but there's no guarantees. Which is fine, except that Wellsy and his team don't tend to go for those types. In fact I think we have a distinct bias towards natural footballers, and off the top of my head I can't think of a single Tom Williams-type project player we have taken on. Even a guy like Simon Hogan who blitzed the draft camp last year displayed pretty sound decision making and footy nous on the field. So while I might not agree with it, I think that in reality we are much more likely to go for a Simpson than a Kangars/Gaertner.

I'm really looking forward to seeing whether we pick up Tom Bellchambers-he is going to be a real gun and could be a good pick at no.44:thumbsu: on the otherhand why r we picking so many forwards!?

I would prefer if we took Kangars at 34, but I'm pretty happy with how he has predicted it for us
I agree...I felt the picks were sound. Notte has a fair bit of upside to him...how much of course its way too soon to know or accurately judge but this is what Wells deservedly gets his money for and the resultant accolades for putting our recent premiership list together. I think Notte would benefit from starting his career down back...before moving forward...so in the scheme of things that works for us also in 3 years time.

My main query was Bellchambers at 44? If as Wells has said we arent just going to take a ruckman for the sake of it...why wait till pick 44 to take one we really want and risk losing him post pick 34? If we have our sights on an athletic raw project type ruckman...thats different.

Other than that I think Burgan offered some interesting insights about certain players on the rise recently in the recruiters thinking...but is the first to admit himself its a very hard draft to predict.

If we dont pick another mid in the ND...I expect us to load up with an assortment of underage rookies with longer term prospects...or a mature age mid like a Ryley Dunn. Not sure there will be much in the 18-19 bracket to rookie at that stage of the draft this year.

Theres too much emphasis of early draft picks isnt there? Have a look at the Draft board, supporters creaming themselves over the prospect of players in all likelihood they havent seen before. A few early draft picks doesnt make a team, I wish they'd understand that. Poor souls. :D

Whoever we get, I'm sure they'll be what we'll need, we dont need to worry about our recruiting staff
