Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

Credit to him for having a crack and for the most part he did a good job but picks #17 and #19 are massive for us and i really don't think he's got it right.

Good thing it's not the real thing yeah? ;)

The only ones people have any right to be pissed at is the recruiters come Saturday morning and even then they won't really know for a few years and given that these guys spend much more time looking at the kids than most blowhards on here.

To those actually annoyed at his effort: ****ing get over yourselves. It's not real... who gives a rats.

(Not aimed at you deenamite :) )

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

Johnson can't ruck. He does ok around the ground but not in the ruck. Thats why they got Meesen next year but he is a dud. Which is why they went hard for Warnock. Melbourne needs a ruckman as much as anyone.

That is true, Melbourne needs a ruckman as much as any other team, but Roughead is not that player, have you seen him ruck? His rucking skills are on a par, or less than Johnson's.
Roughead is regarded highly because he can be (somewhat) effective when he goes forward while resting.
Redden is a much better option imo if we were to go a ruckman at 19.

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

I agree with everything you are saying Whelan. You are not having a pot shot at Burgan. Burgan has his opinion, and you have your opinion, which I happen to agree with. To me, Lynch and Roughead are workmanlike footballers (both redheads?), they are not going to be stars of any team. I really have question marks over Lynch at the next level, does he have enough tricks? Swift could be absolutely anything, or a complete failure. With two picks here, I think the Dees can afford to take the risk - what do they have to lose???? Shoenmakers fills a void for most clubs, a 6'3 running, marking and clever forward, far more upside than Lynch, and could even potentially be converted to a CHB.

As for a ruckman, there are plenty available and certainly you could get a rated one at your next pick (maybe even Roughead)!

Agree, it's not about who he's picked for us, it's more that his perceived needs for Melbourne are not what we think we need.
If there is a midfield option rated on a par with a medium forward/utility option, why would we go the medium forward/utility which we are not in desperate need of and pass up a midfielder which we do need?
Roughead is more of a personal preference, but I think we need a ruckman as Paul Johnson is more than serviceable as a back up, I can't see Roughead ever being a full time ruckman which is what we need, eg Redden, Clarke etc.
I have no problems picking up Walters at 35, pretty happy if that happened, he's a small forward the way Brent Harvey is a small forward.
Jetta at 51 doesn't make sense, as other posters have surely posted, we need help in every department, and our small forwards are one of our best positions, taking two(well 1.5 because Walters will turn into a mid) in a row doesn't make sense as it's neglecting far more pressing needs.
See the above point and change small forward for medium forward for pick 64.
Coming out of this draft with 1 key forward, 1 3rd tall/utility, 2 forward pockets(albeit with midfield potential), a back-up ruckman and a medium forward does not meet most Melbourne supporters perceived needs of 2 Key forwards, 1 first ruck, 2 midfielders and a back pocket.

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

On the other hand, we need a Schoenmakers type HFF/ CHF and would kill for another classy midfielder (and potential steal of the draft) in Swift.
.

What is Lynch then, if not a HFF/CHF type?

We dont need another ruckman either. Paul Johnson is NOT average (and yes he is still young), he is a good ruckman and only getting better. Jamar is a good tap ruckman but shit around the ground. Spencer (rookie) is apparently showing alot of promise at Sandringham and then there is Meesen.

He ranked 33rd in ave Hitouts per game.

His strength is in his around the ground work, yet he averaged 13 disposals per game.

He is not bad, but he isnt above average either.

Meesen is 23 next year, he didnt play a game this year, after trading for him, but still couldn't crack into the 22 when you basically banished your number 1 ruckman to the VFL for 6 rounds in the middle of the year. That is worrying.

Your ruck division isn't even close to settled, adding another highly rated ruckman to the mix isn't going to hurt it.

whelan=legend said:
don't want lynch because he is a clone of Matthew Bate. Have you seen Bate play? Have you seen Lynch play? They are identical, and we don't need another one.
.

Is that because hes a red head?

At the end of the day, you didn't dislike the PD because of the "lack of knowledge towards our needs" but the simple fact because he's linked you towards workman like footballers, rather than the flashy types, or simply because there not the best available footballers! At least come out and say that, rather than posting a 200 word rant on how he didnt assess your needs properly!

All of which your slandering a guy (Who has an infinate amount more knowledge about the draft than anyone on this website, and has been doing it alot longer than EQ) for predicting a draft which hasn't even happened yet.

IMO he got your needs spot on. A tall forward and a ruckman is exactly what Melbourne need.

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

people are pissed off because they value his opinion, they know more often than not he picks a slider or someone who is rated by recruiters and has little cred amongst the hobbyists on BF. Did anyone see who Dave the Man had in his mock and go completely troppo because they thought he wasn't properly assessing their clubs needs? Punters are always afraid that their club is going to call someone out that hasn't been on high rotations through the top 20's of Big Footy mock drafts

Absolutely spot on :thumbsu:

Lynch is a 3rd tall/utility, with Schoenmakers there is potential to model him into a proper KPP.

There are different types of ruckmen and different types of tall forwards.
David Hale is completely different to Sandilands in the way he plays the game, I liken Roughead to Hale, and we don't need a Hale, we need a Sandilands.
Ryan O'keefe is different to Brendan Fevola.
We need a Brendan Fevola more than we need an O'keefe.

Funnily enough who Shoenmakers is most likened too.

Hale is a FF/Ruckman.

Well you arn't going to find an Aaron Sandilands in this draft, if by that you mean a #1 centre bounce ruckman? Roughead is very much in that mould.

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

speculation on bomberblitz that burgan is revising his draft following news that Freo will take Hill at #3. supposedly Hills manager has been told. make of that what you will.

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

I think it's very rich for dees fans to pretend that they can pick and choose between players, ruck wise they have problems, forward wise they have problems. Back wise they have problems. Midfield they have problems. Everywhere they have problems, it is why they finished last and looked way out of their depth.

I mean who is your main forward? Miller? HA! Robertson is getting old and is injured, he can't be your game plan. Main backman? Garland? Your backline may be young and promising but it still needs help. Ruck stocks are bare, players like Jones stagnated. Melbourne's midfield could do with some flair, it is one paced and unaccountable to boot. Yes the dees picks were odd but dees fans can't pretend their list is in any good shape.

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2008/111420080831.html

When the dees played us, their list was older than ours. By some margin. Added to the fact that we also had aging players retiring (Tivendale), you guys need help.

Re: Burgatron's Phantom Draft Due Today

Well, that new order, would make RIG's day

You, Lucky Bombers Fans!!

Rich and Myers in the same midfield, would be an awesome sight!

Re: Burgan changes his top 20!

It does not make sense.
Freo select Hill at 3 so he changes the Saints from Blease to Lynch and has Blease going lower to the Hawks not higher???

Re: Burgan changes his top 20!

If Tom Lynch was taken at 17 in his previous draft, why does Fremantle taking Hill make us take him over Blease? Or has he got new mail on more than just Hill?

I'm a fan of Blease, haven't seen much of Lynch though might go youtube him. Alright did some research and from what I can see Blease > Lynch particularly considering our needs. Hopefully he was right the first time.

Re: Burgan changes his top 20!

Re: Burgan changes his top 20!
