Matt Burgan's annual mock draft is now up on the AFL website.

Here are Adelaide's selections as he sees it:

14 - ADELAIDE - SHANE EDWARDS
North Adelaide, 25 October 1988, 179.6cm, 68.6kg

32 - ADELAIDE - PAUL STEWART
Woodville West Torrens, 10 July 1987, 189.8cm, 82.4kg

48 - ADELAIDE - TIM HOULIHAN
North Ballarat Rebels, 10 February 1989, 189.4cm, 73.5kg

64 - ADELAIDE - SAM JACOBS
Woodville West Torrens, 10 April 1988, 200cm, 100.7kg

78 - ADELAIDE - PASS

My View
3 mids (one of whom is an absolute smokey), 1 ruck.

Probably the only one he's got right is #78.

This would be a disastrous result for Adelaide.

"TIM HOULIHAN

Strongly linked to Adelaide and it's not hard to see why, given his athletic background and his Nathan van Berlo-like qualities. He fits the Crows' mould nicely and he is likely to be a three-round draftee. Fremantle has also showed interest, but expect the Crows to monitor him closely at this stage of proceedings. His terrific efforts at the Draft Camp - including his run in the three-km time-trial - only reinforced his athletic ability to AFL recruiters, which in turn has helped his progress in the draft pecking order."

How dare he!!! :p

I hope Burgan has got it terribly wrong on our behalf.

Yeah, it's pretty mental. To be honest I wouldn't even be happy with Edwards at 14, and I'm a fan of his. Good player, but surely we can find better than him at 14.
Apart from that, a developing ruckman and two tall midfielders (one of whom could possibly play KPP, but certainly isn't the tall forward we're looking for).
Not quite what I'd be hoping for. Let's hope he's way off.

From Adelaide's perspective his effort is piss weak. He didn't even get the needs right.

3 mids and a ruckman is very far fetched. I listed to James on 5AA the other day and while he said that he thought Edwards is a great player it didn't really sound like he will be picked with pick 14. Even Cornesy went on to say "It doesn't sound like you think he will be a 1st round pick".

I very much doubt we pick up Shane Edwards with pick 14. I rate the kid but that would be one out of left field IMHO.

If Ben Reid is there, I think we will take him with 14.

Yep shocking effort for Adelaide.

We will be taking a KPP no doubt. Where is the only question.

Shane Edwards could well be available with 32 as well.

Awful effort, totally against what we need. Edwards is awesome, and I'd love him at crows but not with pick 14. So many harder, tougher and more skilled players available at that pick, staggered Connors slips to 38! He is a quick Brock McLean/Dal Santo hybrid.

To clarify

I dont care who he has number 1 or 21 or 101

I am more interested in his player assessment

;)

Yep, in agreement with you! Burgan seems to have a pretty good knowledge of all players going around, more comprehensive than most BF posters. It's funny how most of us seem to rank players on what BF posters think, without even every seeing them play!

Totally agree with your comment, and don't see it as a contradiction at all.

I think he has a genuine insight into the players abilities - far better than the average punter.

When it comes to who picks who, it's all guesswork or from little snippets he's picked up by talking to the various clubs.

My guess, if last year is anything to go on, Adelaide has once again deliberately led all and sundry up the garden path to keep secret its real intentions at the draft.

Last year, we did not draft one player that was talked about in depth - in reverse neither had we talked much about any of the players we drafted.

In summary, I think Burgatron's selections of 3 mids and 1 ruckman for Adelaide are a fair way off the pace.

Surely!!

Burgan's traditionally been pretty good with our selections.

If he says we're hot and flustered over shane edwards, fair chance we are. note that McDermott thinks we got the johns for him too.

sounds to me that's 2 people who might know something, fairly convinced.

Have to agree that I was disappointed in the mock draft results from Adelaides perspective.

We might rate those players very highly BUT somewhere along the line you have to go with needs.

Year b4 last when we predominately took talls ....that wasn't all best avail
Last year when we predominately took midfielders .....same not all best avail....yes maybe best avail by class type.

We need IMO at least one 193cm plus KPP not a ruckman, we need a 190cm key defender and if the best at 14 is a midfielder so be it but IMO Edwards is a few years in putting weight on (if he can - dad was always slim build).

I agree with everyone else he is way off the mark, we will pick up at least two key postition players if not more. I have just been listening to Matt Burgan explain his picks and then respond to criticism. He went to great lengths to justify picking talls for Collingwood but the same logic he used should have applied to Adelaide and even more so the Bulldogs as it is ridiculous to suggest that they might pick 5 midefielders and no talls.

He is well off the mark this year.

I would be gutted if we used our first round pick on Edwards. Good little player but physically he is years away from being AFL ready.

We need KPP's and inside players with NATURAL aggression who are ready to step up to the plate in 2 years, 3 years tops.

I reckon we might end up with Edwards - but the problem with The Burgonator et al....is that he uses computer software programmed with the profile of existing squads v's draft order v's what's available in the draft.

If we end up with only 1 player from this draft over 190cms - I'm gonna spew up......

Average draft for us. Edwards at 14 is ok, Houlihan at 48 is great, but Jacobs and stewart... At 32 I'd much rather Garland or Austin who both are KPP's. Houli or Connors at 32 as well. Burgatron says we're interested in Garland and Austin so maybe we mgiht pick them up. Jacobs.. do we need another developing ruckman?

I was surprised to see Edwards go to us at 14, to me he is another Richie Douglas clone. I also question why one would take him over Schmidt. and McKenzie, the Brown Brothers, Armitage and Proud are still there @ 14. Any of those lads would be better value. Maybe the thinking is that by taking either Edwards or Schmidt the going home factor doesn't come into it. I like the Houlihan pick, there has been consistent talk around the traps that we like him a lot. Jacobs is a good kid but why another ruckman? We have enough now. IMO we should be taking a combo of 1 tall Forward, 1 tall defender and 2 midfielders and the last pick held for the PSD. Now we can all argue who should be taken where but the important thing is not to reach for a lad. Draft for value and that works everytime.
