As the 2013 season has finished and we're now heading into the silly season of delistings/trades/draft, I wanted to generate some discussion about some players who end this season with question marks over their futures.

1. Chris Newman
Does he still command a best 22 spot in 2014?
If not, should we name him VFL captain?

2. Matt Dea
Will he finally become a best 22 player in 2014?

3. Jake Batchelor
Can he get back to being a best 22 player in 2014?
Should we look at trading him this off season?

4. David Astbury
Can he get back to the level he showed in his debut season?
Should we look at trading him this off season?

5. Luke McGuane
Should we re-sign him?

6. Ben Griffiths
Can he step up and become the KPF we hoped he would be when drafted?
Should we look at trading him this off season?

7. Robin Nahas
Should we keep him on the list or should we trade him for whatever we can get?

8. Brad Helbig
Can he push for a best 22 spot if he remains on the list?

9. Matthew White
Should he be re-signed?
Does he retain his best 22 spot in 2014?

10. Tom Derickx
If we delist him and there is no mature ruckman available in the draft should we rookie list him?

11. Nathan Foley
Will he regain his spot in the best 22 in 2014?

12. Matthew Arnot
Will he be Tucks replacement in the midfield?

13. Brett O'Hanlon
Can he force his way into the 22 in 2014 if fully fit?

1. Chris Newman
Does he still command a best 22 spot in 2014? Not an automatic selection, but I'm reasonably sure he'll be in the team come round 1.
If not, should we name him VFL captain?

2. Matt Dea
Will he finally become a best 22 player in 2014? No.

3. Jake Batchelor
Can he get back to being a best 22 player in 2014? Touch and go. Has a lot of the attributes to become a really good player for us but for mine he took a step back in 2013.
Should we look at trading him this off season? Yes. If the right offer came along I'd look at moving him on. Could be a good result for both player and club.

4. David Astbury
Can he get back to the level he showed in his debut season? No. Has clearly lost his speed and looked shockingly slow at times this season. Still he is a bloody good footballer and has a good 'footy brain'. Provides good depth and could still make it.
Should we look at trading him this off season? Not unless an amazing offer came along.

5. Luke McGuane
Should we re-sign him? Not fussed either way.

6. Ben Griffiths
Can he step up and become the KPF we hoped he would be when drafted? Yes. I still think he is a forward not a defender though. Can still picture him slotting them from 65m all day:).
Should we look at trading him this off season? Same as Astbury, would need a strong offer to take him away.

7. Robin Nahas
Should we keep him on the list or should we trade him for whatever we can get? Trade him for anything. Seriously anything.

8. Brad Helbig
Can he push for a best 22 spot if he remains on the list? Don't think so. Move him on.

9. Matthew White
Should he be re-signed? Yes. If you asked me 12 months ago would have been a no but his 2013 was a real breakout year and he offers us something, run and spread, we really lack in a lot of other players.
Does he retain his best 22 spot in 2014? Another good pre-season and Whitey will be hard to pass up, especially if Axel is traded.

10. Tom Derickx
If we delist him and there is no mature ruckman available in the draft should we rookie list him? No.

11. Nathan Foley
Will he regain his spot in the best 22 in 2014? Will be a fringe player. Could easily see him playing 10-15 games though. Happy to keep him but won't cry if we trade him elsewhere.

12. Matthew Arnot
Will he be Tucks replacement in the midfield? I hope so. Liked what I saw from him this year. Just listen to Cotch and follow in his footsteps.

13. Brett O'Hanlon
Can he force his way into the 22 in 2014 if fully fit? I don't think so.

Keep Griff, O'Hanlon, White, Aarnot and Astbury. 1 Year contracts.

McGuane, Dea, Helbig and Batchelor should be shopped around. All have shown something, but we can't hold on to them forever. Trying to find a trade for them now would at least get us something in return. Holding on to them for one more year may see their value plummet. Keep one of Dea, Helbig and Batch on a 1 year contract depending on what deals can be done.

D-Rex and Nahas gone.

I love axel, but if he's got currency and could be used to snare Adams (or similar) then thanks for your service, you'll be remebered fondly.

Newman is a required player for 2014. May play some games in the magoos next year but his experience and leadership is still required. Stepped his game up in the finals until he rolled his ankle.

As the 2013 season has finished and we're now heading into the silly season of delistings/trades/draft, I wanted to generate some discussion about some players who end this season with question marks over their futures.

1. Chris Newman
Does he still command a best 22 spot in 2014? Is probably now in the bottom 6 of our best 22, will probably drop back to the 2's if a suitable replacement pope up throughout the year
If not, should we name him VFL captain?

2. Matt Dea
Will he finally become a best 22 player in 2014? Can't see it happening

3. Jake Batchelor
Can he get back to being a best 22 player in 2014? Maybe, there may be a chance if he plays as a mid sized defender but absolutely no chance if played as a kpd or 3rd tall
Should we look at trading him this off season? I would, float his name out there and see what kind of offers we get and if we dont get a suitable one we can always keep him.

4. David Astbury
Can he get back to the level he showed in his debut season? Unsure, Injury has really set him back and I always though he looks better as a forward so it will depend on where Hardwick wants to play him.
Should we look at trading him this off season? Same as Batchelor really, If a good offer comes our way I say we take it as we have a few needs on our list that need filling and we will need all the players and picks we can get to make them happen.

5. Luke McGuane
Should we re-sign him? No, He has had his time and while we saw a mini revival with him up forward he is still too inconsistent and can't remember any game where he put in a solid performance across all 4 quarters. And in the last 3 games of the season it showed that Edwards has gone past him.

6. Ben Griffiths
Can he step up and become the KPF we hoped he would be when drafted? Well for that to happen he has to be played as a forward, I don't understand the genius strategy of drafting a gun junior full forward who can take a grab and kick the ball a mile and try to convert him into a full back... Would like to see him given at least 1 more year and played as a forward and maybe a few stints in the ruck as relief for Ivan and Ty.
Should we look at trading him this off season? No, But if the right offer comes along we would be silly to refuse.

7. Robin Nahas
Should we keep him on the list or should we trade him for whatever we can get? He's gone, Would rather us chase Didak or Banfield as Nahas has had his chances and has failed to take them. Gun player when he is on his game but his attitude and mindset seem to prevent that from happening most of the time. Time to give someone else a go.

8. Brad Helbig
Can he push for a best 22 spot if he remains on the list? I dunno, I just dont see what all the fuss is about with him really, same with Dea.

9. Matthew White
Should he be re-signed? Yeah he deserves another year at least, works well as the sub and is 1 of the best finshers at the club, plus we need his speed.
Does he retain his best 22 spot in 2014? I'd say yes as the sub and maybe give him a few starts here and there and see how he goes

10. Tom Derickx
If we delist him and there is no mature ruckman available in the draft should we rookie list him? Short answer: NO! Long Answer: HELL NO! He is almost 26 and has been on the list for 3 years and only managed to play 2 games, that says enough for me.

11. Nathan Foley
Will he regain his spot in the best 22 in 2014? Not sure, the midfield seemed to do ok without him for most of the year so he may struggle to get back in, Would like us to use him to get Taylor Adams if possible.

12. Matthew Arnot
Will he be Tucks replacement in the midfield? Long term maybe, but short term probably not.

13. Brett O'Hanlon
Can he force his way into the 22 in 2014 if fully fit? He may get a game or 2 but then its up to him to keep his spot so we will see I guess

Would be shopping most of them around. Most will only play AFL if someone GST injured, Arnott, White & Newy the only exceptions in that lot. Batch I would argue to keep but if we can get a good trade from him and say McGun together then you wold have to go for it I say.

Surely Derrix, Nahas, Griffiths will all get the see ya later hand shake and the others into our vfl side if no trade found!

Really good thread RT.

I was having a bit of a play on my imaginary white board just to see in my own mind how I'd stack them up based on what we currently have.
Obviously this is only my opinion and will vary greatly from somebody else.
If I was picking round one next year I'm thinking

B- Grimes Rance Morris
HB-Vlastuin Chaplin Houli
C- Ellis Martin Deledio
HF-White Riewoldt Jackson
F- Vickery. Mcbean S.Edwards
R- Maric. Cotchin Conca
Int- Newman King Petterd Knights
Em- Grigg. Foley. Bachelor

Leftover- Dea. Astbury Mcguane. Lonergan Griffiths
Nahas. A.Edwards. Helbig. Derrykx. Mcintosh. McDonough
Stephenson. Arnott O'Hanlon.Elton
Plus any draftees.
Clear as mud haha.

Ok- think Derrykx is gone.
Nahas I expect to be elsewhere otherwise gone. Surely tradeable for a low pick.
It will be interesting to gauge any interest in Foley.
Either one of Mcguane or A.Edwards will be gone I think.
Either one of Helbig or O'Hanlon the same.
Not sure if Lonergan is required.

Honestly can't see us being too active at trade time. Perhaps Foley or one from left field that is approached from other clubs.

Whatever happened to Helbig? o_O
He's always had mongrel and a fierce attack on the ball, but he's always lacked peripheral vision and awareness in traffic, he just lacks that little something, I compare him to Jake King in his early stages, I think the best he could be is a no frills fringe player.

Newy like Ivan will be rested as much as possible next year.IMO
White has earnt a contract.
Arnot,Body like a tank, not sure if thats the best thing for him
Id keep both Dea and O'Hanlon.
I'd offer up Griff,Astbury,Foley and Batch.Keep if no interest or offers not that good.
Bye Bye to Nahas,Mcguane and Derickx.

Keep Dea for sure, trade/delist Nahas, keep White or trade him if win-win,Foley don't know, probably make the team, trade?, Arnot will not replace Tuck even if he makes the team different height different player/role,Helbig-don't know the story, O'Hanlon-don't know the story, Derrix maybe under the rookie scenario, Griff keep unless other club desperate for him -take the value punt unless unaware issue, Mguane trade if possible, Astbury try and trade, Batchelor possible trade-don't delist anyway, Newman who knows? Lonergan definite delist, fills no need.

I would be looking at trading other players at some stage for value that carry more currency TBH and to freshen up the list!

Dea: delist. no good.
Arnot: don't know about Tuck's replacement, but we need grunt players and he provides it.
Helbig: I still see something in him. one more year.
Derickx: last half of the year in VFL was good. If we can get Longer or someone else though, he is gone.
White: definitely best 22. Probably our most improved.
McGuane: would prefer he wasn't there, but needs to be congratulated on what he did this year.
Newman: writing is on the wall. Making him VFL captain would be the ultimate indignity and quite frankly is a ludicrous suggestion.
Astbury: This is the conundrum with he, Griffiths and Elton. How long do you keep these guys on the list until they start to show something? I'd be offering him as trade, but wouldn't get much.
Griffiths: 200cm kids who can kick the ball 65m don't grow on trees. Once again, how much longer though? Trade, but wouldn't get much.
Foley: ridiculous signing him up for three years this year. really silly list management. Would offer for trade, but we wouldn't get anything for him.
Batchelor: frustrating that the talented ones on our list seem to be the most nonchalant.
O'Hanlon: keep. Liked the cut of his jib last year. Could he be the small forward?
Nahas: goodbye

Arnot will be pushing for senior selection, as he should be.

White deserves another year more than anyone else in the list.

Newman will be phased out but kept for his leadership, however we need someone to step up and replace him. Knights?

Dea, Helbig, Astbury, Batchelor, O'Hanlon and Elton are fringe players based on 2013, need to show more or can be used for trades.

I think McGuane might actually get an offer and we'll lose him, not a bad thing. Last year I wanted to keep him because we needed the depth, this year I think we're past needing him. I really hope someone picks him up.

Problem with Griffiths is if we're having to rely on him kicking from 65m out with our squad something is seriously wrong. And we have a number of players that can kick a goal outside 50 quite easily. Why would you bother with a player that just can't attack the ball like a Martin or Deledio and is very limited in how you can use him. IMO Vickery and Griffiths are competing for the same spot right now, and Vickery is doing 10x the job at AFL level that Griffiths is doing in VFL.

Nahas and Derickx will be gone.

Looking through the Saints list they're more than likely to offer Siposs for Batchelor. I don't see any upside to both clubs if that is the case.

Dea: delist. no good. Wrong.
O'Hanlon: keep. Liked the cut of his jib last year. Could he be the small forward? 189cm isn't very small.

And people think Stanley is good? Got straight-line pace and that's about all thats going for him.
