A school about 5km from me is closed tomorrow due to high risk of bushfire. Fortunately, there's a big river and lake separating my house from it. There was a small bush fire around that area that I could see clearly from my house a couple years ago.

Since the article and poster failed to point it out, Carol Sparks is a Greens councillor and Claire Pontin is Labor.

Whilst I think it’s naive to ignore climate change, I think it’s foolish to pretend we wouldn’t be experiencing these conditions if climate change didn’t exist. Climatologists have been quite clear that there are multiple other, bigger factors at play that are having a much bigger immediate influence on the conditions we are experiencing.

If warnings from emergency services chiefs were ignored that is more concerning. I did however find it odd that Greg Mullins had sent an unanswered request to meet with the PM, but had made no effort to meet with the Emergency Services minister.

fu** do I need to research? You're talking down Australia's biggest city on fire as "cheap news feed".

I note your quick "look over there"

perhaps take a deep breath and try and stay focused. Then look at the map and revert to your initial whinge.

Why cold fronts are bad news

As much as I love seeing the PM et al being exposed as the shit campaigners they are it would be nice if this wasn't just a political shit fight and to concentrate on the task at hand.

I have on good authority from boomers on Facebook that it's all the Greens' fault.
A minor political party that in QLD has 1/93 seats, NSW 6/135 and federally 10/227 is naturally those at fault for land clearing policy etc

The whole people deliberately lighting fires thing doesn't help.

And for 2 full days we have been told all about how dangerous today is going to be.

Then with no fires anywhere they shut hundreds of schools.

Meaning kiddie arsonists everywhere are getting a gift of free time and all the encouragement they need.

How many local councils are Labor/Green alliances ?

How many of these councils have massive fines for people who clear their properties to a safe level recommended by the RFS ?

Can’t believe there has never been bad fires in Australia until now.
But the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen is people for or against cropping on about it in the news when people are about to face the worst day in their lives, nobody to blame it just ****ung happens unfortunately, always has and always will.
And if you or anybody you know are in the affected areas please tell them not to hang around it’s pointless and any presence on the property is absolutely irrelevant on days like this. Just leave or hopefully you/they already have.

We have the opposite of that and still had massive fires last year

Hopefully in any review the government realises the real inadequacies of some of our current firefighting setups given we are one of the countries with the largest bushfire risks in the world and one of the only countries without it's own firefighting air fleet, given the $B's of infrastrcture, lives lost over the last 3 decades from bushfires and our relative budgets compared to other countries, it's unacceptable.

The government should really look at setting up a new Air Support Group of the RAAF who's direction of authority is transferable to a state in a time of emergency.

Erikson bought the licensing for the Skycrane and is marketed as the Aircrane these days. At $40m a pop they are expensive for State Govt. but not for the RAAF. They could contract to overseas countries and territories during emergencies in our winters.

The Army Spent more on the failed Eurotiger Attack Helicopters and we are already looking at swapping them out for the new Bell Vipers which will likely be over $45m+ a unit.

We've spent $80m+ for each of the F-32's Lightnings.

The Bombadier 457's are probably ideal given our coastal nature, and at $35m they are decent value for money.

Canada operates a fleet of 64 of them for firefighting purposes.

They do this to chase out prey into the open.

Fecking birds - if they aren't swooping us to death they are starting catastrophic bushfires! Kill the lot of em!

It is ridiculous we do not have serious firefighting capabilities.

For 200 years we have relied on "let it burn, hope it avoids towns, if not throw as many people at it as you can".

Got family in coffs harbour - they are ok for now but on petty high alert. They are more worried about friends in neighbouring areas - most have been evacuated or evacuated on their own accord.
Our family are on the verge of losing a property west of Kempsey. Hopefully they got out - when I spoke to them at 11 they were packing up and sending the cattle down to the river. However the fire's since broken containment lines, and the RFS are telling people that it's too late to leave.

please refer maps above and the assess the locations of Australia's historical bush fire locations

I live in a reasonably affluent suburb of Sydney and have had my suburb named as one of the most high risk areas in Sydney. Please do tell me how this constitutes 'living in the bush'.

#humblebrag

Are you neighbours sending their BMWs down to the harbour for safe keeping?
