lol at Gray's defensive game or lack of being mentioned here u know a natural ball winner/playmaker compared to a big dopey forward who doesn't read the play well or judge the ball well in flight or lead well or kick well all while letting his opponents run off him like he's in lala land.

I'm not sure why people don't get that the single biggest reason a player doesn't make themselves a career at AFL level is the player themselves - whether that be injury, ability or mental toughness.

Butch struggled in two of these areas, I like him and wanted him to succeed because of what he cost us but time moves on....... from the moment he first struggled in his second AFL season he never regained confidence.

His second AFL season was 2012. Here's a list of Port player who didn't struggle in 2012.

Jay Schulz
Paul Stewart
Kane Cornes
Chad Wingard

That's about it.

I wanted him to succeed as much as the next guy, but he simply had limitations that would never be overcome by AFL experience. The goals that he scored in the SANFL (and when in the AFL) mainly came from non-structural play, eg Joe the Goose rather than mark-lead-goal. He also lacked the core strength to consistently stay in and impact contests. He was pushed off his axis too easily and thus was not a serious long-term key forward option. Look at how he bends over at the hips in a lot of contests, couldn't stay upright under physical duress. Like/love the guy, but it's over and it was never going to work out.

Why was this thread moved to Club 1870? There is already a John Butcher player information thread in Club 1870. This thread is and has always been an opinion thread on Butcher and related topics such as selection, team structural issues, etc.
Because people keep opening this thread knowing there's literally only one topic of discussion possible (hello, thread title) that they can easily avoid, but instead choose to enter the thread and complain anyway.

I know that may seem a bit hypocritical considering I've advocated against the media thread in the media thread before, but that was because it would always descend into posting literally anything vaguely positive about the Crows. I have actually abstained from opening it since the original was split, but I do worry I've missed a tribey POTY or two.

This thread is so circular and definitive that if you're gonna open it to ask for it to be moved or closed, why bother opening it at all?

Oh well. I guess those subbed to the thread can continue to have a jolly time here, at the infinite Butcher thread.

I just hope Todd Marshall gets a better run at it than Butch did.

Hurr durr the Monopoly Times thinks Eddie Betts is a good player, so biased, screw you Crers customers rabble rabble rabble

So what is your definition of a "journeyman"? A quick dictionary check for you:
journeyman
ˈdʒəːnɪmən/
noun
  1. 1.
a worker or sports player who is reliable but not outstanding.
    "a solid journeyman professional"

Wow, I seriously thought it was a player who was at several clubs, albeit often for the reason you described. Makes me wonder what other words I have completely invented a definition of.

You mean like the 'I've lost faith in Ken Hinkley' thread? Or the 'Let's talk Ports' thread?

It's a thread for you all to sook like babies who don't have their bottle. Well, you can do it here now, away from everyone else who wants to discuss selection, team structural issues etc without having to wade through garbage about this guy being the answer to a question no one asked.

Not for players who don't work hard or defend. And especially not in 2013/2014.
Picking players because they try hard and not because they'll make us a better football team got Matt Thomas 87 games for this once feared football club, and 55 for Andrew Moore.

Some players need a bit of development, and we'll never be a good football team again if we hold Howard and Marshall to the same insane standards we held Butcher. We gave Pittard plenty of time to flourish. We're pumping games into Jake Neade without getting any return fitting of our investment. Why can't we do the same thing with tall forwards?

This is a tasteless post. For a guy who often posts blind optimism about our club, this is appallingly negative. Butcher might not have made it and there are different views as to why. To call him a spud is poor form. I trust you'll call Hinkley the same if we miss out on finals a third time on his watch.
No doubt it would all be the fault of the players and how they're not trying hard enough again.

Mitch Thorp

If we had got in, in 1990 then Scott Hodges could quite possibly have won a Coleman medal. The Crows treated him like total shit.
Thorp missed out because Hawthorn were already developing 2 young key forwards who went on to become champions of the game.

We dropped Butcher in 2014 so 175cm midfielder Say Gray could play forward pocket.
Apparently 30 infrequent games is enough to call an individual career, but two full seasons in a row isn't enough evidence that an entire team isn't a flag threat and has problems, or that a gameplan is arse.

Obvious systematic tactical issues, but apparently we've just drafted lazy and mentally weak players who don't try hard enough. So unlucky.
You mean the same Schoenmakers who has missed three years of football with injury, and who was one of their best in the 2015 final series when he returned, helping them to another premiership? I'd take him on a heartbeat!
Schoenmakers at 30 games was the laughing stock of the league and was persisted with and developed until he reached 100 games.

He's still a stopgap player, but he's able to play an important role as a tall because he was backed in despite the fanbase calling for his dropping and delisting.

Some of the better statistical indicators of effort and trying in the league, like tackles, pressure acts, one percenters, inside 50s, contested possessions: Players are lazy and need to work harder.

Whats your point here, you're agreeing he struggled in 2012, are you saying he didn't struggle afterwards ?
