Good point on Morabito. I guess it depends if the club decides to draft based on best available or whether they look at it on a needs-fulfilment basis. That is assuming, of course, that the club deems Morabito to be slightly ahead of Butcher, which may not even be the case.

This leads to another interesting thought. If WCE continue to tank the way they are, and in doing so acquire a PP, would they select Butcher, or go for a WA boy such as Morabito? If they were to do that, we could end up with Butcher even if pick 2 wasn't ours.

Thanks Cannon,

Yes, it would be intresting what WCE will do at Pick 2. I'm assume they could use this pick on Lucas or Morabito. WCE are lacking midfield power since the departure of Cousins and Judd. I think they need another quality midfield, not only this rreason, but putting the pressure of Kerr.

Still, I doubt WCE will tank because they can win few more matches at their home ground especially Hawks (Rd 13), Fremantle (Rd 17), Essendon (Rd 18), Kangaroos (Rd 20) and Richmond (Round 22). Furthermore, if Mr Worsfold is seeking for contract extension, then I doubt tanking will be on his radar.

I agree that we would probably not be taking Scully with our first pick, although perhaps with our second, if we can. Pretty clear to my mind that we should take a KPF at #1 again.

Who are you agreeing with? Everybody is thinking we should get Scully with pick 1 if we get it.

If we get pick 1, it has to be Scully we need that skillful midfielder than can kick.

Butcher would be near on useless if we don't have Scully, the simple fact is that we could have the best forward line in league but it would mean bugger all if we can have good kicks coming into the forward 50.

Even the Franklins, Rougheads and Fevola's struggle with shit delivery.

Scully is the must get in my opinion if we don't get the PP.

Yeah, that's a brainfart by me... I was in the middle of some work stuff at the same time.

I've changed my original post accordingly. Yeah, maybe if we don't get the PP, Scully would be the primary focus.

Monday arvo drunkness?

We have to get Scully. Our midfield needs him. Watts will be a gun key forward and we still have Bate who is decent, Jurrah who could be anything and even Newton. When you throw in Maric and Wonna as decent smalls and having Sylvia kick goals from the midfield, you have a decent forward line in the making. Our midfield is in a far worse state. The midfield I'd want next year:

C: Green McLean Morton
R: Meesen Grimes Scully

Int: Johnson/Jamar Jones Moloney

We'd also have Bruce on a flank perhaps and Davey somewhere too.

14. Sam Blease
(Eastern Ranges, 184cm, 70kg)
Blease is another dasher. He’ll get the ball, run, give it, get it back and
run again. Of the line breakers in this draft, he and Hill are the best. He’s
still skinny, but his height is fi ne and he has great balance. I think he could
become a bigger possession winner at AFL level — the way the game is
played will suit him.

That is what Emma Quayle wrote about Blease.

I feel that people are forgetting him and Strauss because they haven't played. We have gun midfielders, they haven't played yet! While Scully would be great, if we don't get him there are plenty of other quality midfielders that will be available. Butcher or another KPF is a must because having two gun KPFs will strengthen our team a lot more.

I'll have to assume that you don't know what you're talking about. Scully is the best kid in Australia and daylight is second.

Here are just some reasons why that comment is ridiculous:

1. This time last year Rich and Naitanui were the best players going around. Watts wasn't even being mentioned. Another great prospect may pop up in the next few months that nobody is talking about now.

2. I am saying this assuming we don't get 1 & 2, lets say 1 & 3. If our recruiting staff know for a fact that WC want Butcher and will take him with 2 if available, then what the hell do you want us to do? Take Scully and Lucas? Scully and Fitzpatrick? The fact is Butcher is the best KPF prospect at the moment, and Melbourne need another KPF. At the moment Scully is the best midfielder and it would be terrific if we get him, but in my opinion if we take Butcher and WC take Scully, we are still going to get a great midfield prospect with pick 3. If we take Scully with 1 and WC take Butcher with 2, there isn't that great a KPF prospect available.

Bond, have a look at this article from over a year ago.

One recruiter believes that by the end of the year — "if not by the end of the carnival" — Watts will be considered the best young prospect in the country. Another, still firmly in the Naitanui camp, described Watts as this year's shooting star. Another went further still. "If the draft was on tomorrow and I had first pick, I'd be choosing him," he said. "Without hesitation. He's just a natural player, he's an athlete and he's a very strong competitor.
"Nick's an extraordinary talent in terms of athleticism, but there's still a bit of 'see ball, get ball' about him. He's still learning how to find the footy, so that's what you'll need to have a think about if you're picking down there. Because he's so gifted athletically he's going to be a very good player, but if he gets the other side happening he'll be a superstar.

I recall it was the week of the Brisbane game that the radio first started talking him up as a #1. Obviously they're well behind the real students of recruiting, but that was the first time there was media hype and the Rich/Natanui combo started to slide out of contention. That was the end of June.

Feel free to go back to year and posts and discredit this theory as I'd rather be wrong than have to find the posts.

Pick the best available (likely Scully). I've heard mixed reports about Butcher.

I was talking to a dude the other week about Sam Blease. He reckons Sam's, Peter Matera all over again. I'd be pretty content with that!

We have to get Scully, he's been quoted by scouts as Joel Selwood MKII. We cannot! I repeat, cannot let a player like this get away.

On Butcher, I'm not to sure as I haven't seen much of the kid or heard spectacular things. I'll be happy as long as we get Scully.

Reportedly had a bit of a shocker in the wet.

SA kid called Panos is getting some buzz on the D&T board as a top 10 KPF. Maybe if we want Scully and lose Butcher Panos could be the man?

I just want Scully really. We already got Watts and Jurrah for our Buddy/Roughy combination, let's leave it at that lol. I know butcher may be a good inclusion to add to those 2 but hey, Jurrah and Watts don't need him lol
