It kills me to see teams just persist with kpp's even if they have rubbish periods....yet we persist with pocket players at best

We are so behind developing a kpf we probably need to buy one now...

Richmond took Ty Vickery at 8 in the 2008 draft. In 2009 and 2010 he was played for 23 games, none of them really promising, but he was persisted with. 2011 he played 23 games, kicked 36 goals with two bags of 4. He was injured in 2012. Now he is a useful KPF. get Butch was continually injured in his early years but once he started, he was given a very short time to prove himself. He played 3 games in 2014 which were not much to write home about but he really should have been given more time. He dropped a crucial easy mark in his 3rd game(against North Melbourne at Etihad - we lost it by 7 points) and some people felt he was made a scapegoat. He played the first game of the season and was immediately dropped. With others getting promotion to AFL although they have not proved themselves there, and we already have players in their positions anyway, there seems no reason to not try Butcher till the end of the year.

Have to agree.
Doubt he would cost us games like some seem to think, and if he was to score a few then at the very least he would add trade value.

Win for him as he could get a chance for another contract somewhere, and win for us if we do plan to delist him by getting a pick in return.

We shouldn't be worried about Butch costing us games anyway, we seem to have that covered already!

I'd put him in for the rest of the year and see what happens. At the very least it would be interesting to see how he performs when the selection pressure is taken out of the equation. Worst case scenario he completely spuds it up and we lose by 20 pts instead of 10.

Butch getting 8 touches a game instead of Sam Gray getting 8 touches a game? I'd put money on Butch at least being able to turn a few of those touches into goals.

And a permanent target at full-forward would help.

Butch had 7 touches, 5 kicks, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal and 1 goal assist against the defensive Freo in the first game of the year after coming into the side as an emergency.

Shulz had 4 more touches (all handballs), one less mark and one less tackle. He kicked 1.1.

Edit: pulled stats from memory but went back and checked.

But nah, let's drop Butcher and bring in an underdone Redden.
It still does my head in when I think of round 2.

We brought in Redden to get the team to play to a two man ruck set up as this needed to be developed for Lobbe and Ryder, not so much a like for like replacement different players, In saying that it surprised me they bought Redden in i understood what they were trying to do.

On butcher i would love to see him succeed but i think he has missed the boat, We couldnt gift him games in 2014 we were pushing hard up the ladder to play finals, he missed his opportunity in the Primus days when we were terrible, due to injury 2013 &14 were years we wanted to impress.

Freo managed to gift Taberner games this year despite pushing hard for a flag.

Sydney gifted Sam Reid games for years and got him to 80 odd games and to the point where he slotted in as the lead forward when we played them and monstered us.

The idea that we couldn't play him because we were winning is a furphy. We played Sam Gray and Kane Mitchell most of the year.

Gray and Mitchell doesnt come into it different players, i know Taberner played 14 games last season and showed plenty so not sure he was being gifted games.

Gray replaced Butcher as a direct swap, and Mitchell replaced Gray at some points, so they're all in the same conversation regardless of size and skill set.

Taberner has shown comfortably less than Butcher had at the same level of age and experience.

all I am left to think about Butch is that the modern game is just too much for him, like too much bullshit and not enough footy, I mean when you get to the elite level it's not so much about being a good footy player is it? on the surface he seems like a quiet country lad with great natural ability but what he has to do to become an AFL forward is just too much of an undertaking. some people just wanna have fun and it's clearly no fun to him..

remember all the fun and games the boys had at the pub with Butch when we were waiting (and praying) for him to sign a contract?

When he signed we were as happy as if we'd won first div x-lotto

now it feels like a spot 2 in keno
yep i was there and your right it was like winning the lotto we didn't realise it was chook lotto

:D

Do think his past couple of games when in defence showed improvement - maybe a backup KPD beckons (despite some here saying he is only a forward).
Why not? Won't get a decent trade value for him.
