How did Butcher go yesterday? I wasn't able to watch the game, and I don't think I'll get a chance to see the replay unless I'm really keen (which I'm not :p)
The game itself is worth a watch IMO, one of our better performances for the year.

But just in case you don't.

I think his game was a little bit below average (in the literal sense). He really tried hard, there wasn't a single contest I recall where he didn't impose himself. To be honest the sight of someone able to do this in our forwardline was borderline nostalgic. He even managed to hurt a few opposition players and even made Haynes shit his pants when he was running at him in the last after a few contests with him earlier in the game. He got his hands to many incoming balls without ever really getting a piece of most of them. Which probably is an apt way of explaining how he was below his knees too, many sort of bobbled around without being able to one grab them. He did however take a couple crackers, not one grabbers but real strong contested marks with defenders mauling him. His leading was poor, too often not providing dummy leads and also dragging his player towards a teammate attempting a mark. He tackled well, and generally moved very well to attacking positions once the ball was on the ground. He had a free kick in the first which resulted in a bad miss from then he continued to just work and hit packs until the late in the game, where surprisingly to me he wasn't subbed off which was basically my favourite coaching move of the day. His second half was good, he didn't disappear as he had in previous seasons. He was the main player in basically the most memorable play this year where he had 3 involvements including two marks, hard running, a neat pass and tight angle clutch goal which was the turning point. He later had a strong mark and failed to make the distance. He did some of the hard and invaluable things so well yet still had his poor kicking and a few times he maybe could have clunked the grab (that's marking him harshly).

From a 25 game key forward it was a beyond acceptable game and on it alone, he should be selected for the season remainder. He showed all his promise as well as his downfalls in a single game. Probably his best game in his last 20. He has much to learn but that was never debated, he did as well as anyone could have asked for.

Top post:thumbsu:

With no pre-game preparation or knowledge he was playing , Butch performed beyond expectations. Centred a short kick around the body for our first goal. Always had two defenders on him, competed well and not the least effective player out there. Not a star but lets apply the same kicking to a host of other players. Yep, in the third quarter, Hoff's great mark in defence followed by a 'perfect' kick to GWS CHF area - sorry, Mitch you weren't tall enough! and I didn't see that really tall bloke in front of you..............FFS!!!

As Ken said in the Magarey Room, "I'm sick of people putting s**t on Butch"
I loved barracking for him yesterday and think his one percentors aren't given enough credit. A mate who is a Glenelg supporter said to me today the Bays would have won if Butcher was playing. Fact is you didn't mate cos your side is shit and irrelevant. I for one hope he's stays on our list.

Watch the replay! if not for Butch then Ah Chee. And if not for either of those, then just for the Lulz. Funniest game of football.

I agree with some of that .

I thought it was a typical Butch-like performance. His workrate was good, he got into decent positions and competed in the contests, but just couldn't pull down any grabs, and (aside from the goal assist in the first qtr + clutch goal in the last qtr) couldn't finish off his work. He had a minor influence on the game but overall he was below what you'd expect of a key forward in a game where we kicked over 100 points. Thought his defensive pressure was OK - only laid 1 tackle, but that's the tradeoff for competing in aerial contests.

He'll probably hold his spot, but as much as I've wanted the guy to succeed all these years, IMO he doesn't have a future as a key forward at Port if we're genuine about being premiership contenders.

Below that of a key forward I grant you, below that of a 25 gamer?..I think he was about right for that.

I guess that's where I struggle to judge him. Most 25 gamers haven't been in the system anywhere near as long as Butch, so as a 6th (or is it 7th?) year player I would expect more. I'd keep him in the side though given it was his first game back from a long stint in the Magoos.

If only we had done so 4 years ago.

It's clear that his chronic hip injuries have had a major impact on his selection. They've definitely impacted his confidence in his own body, which has flowed through to every aspect of his game and definitely influenced his non-selections.

For someone playing in defence for over a month to get the call up last minute to be our main key forward target...

...Butch did a great job.

Be honest, the footy is just more exciting with Butch in the team.
Agree. He has a tangible likability factor.

You seen the 2 goals in the last from his contests and bringing the ball down infront? That's more than a minimal impact as the 2 game breaking goals came from that. I think his goal in the last lifted us as well, the visible energy from the players when he kicked it as they all want him to succeed seem to lift them up a notch.

I'll post something I wrote a few months ago, to respond to the 'we never showed faith in him' crew:

From his debut in late 2011 through to the end of 2012 he only played 2 SANFL games. He then missed the start of the SANFL season, played 6 SANFL games in a row, was promoted and played 8 out of his next 9 games at AFL level. Kicked 3 goals in his only SANFL game and was brought straight back in. He was perservered with until he picked up 1 kick in 2 games and was dropped.
So once in the side, he played 12 of 14, then 8 of 9 games. The 3 SANFL games he played in that time were coming back from injury, not because of omission. From his debut through to his final game in 2013 he was not dropped once.
That's fairly persistent for a player that averaged 7 touches and 2.5 marks a game in that time. Sure he wasnt persisted with last year, maybe he should have been, maybe not.

He has a style not suited to the SANFL but which brings something extra to the AFL.

He should not have been dropped last year. Though the way the year panned out Hinkley and co. can't really be criticised for their choices.

Yep fair call. I just want to see him actually influence more contests instead of just PROVIDING a contest.

If his body is holding up and he gets a run of 4 continual games, he might prove his worth at AFL level.

This year has been his best in terms of avaiability. If he can build on that - 2016 could very well be his year. I think it would be borderline foolish to delist him after he has had almost a full year of footy. He is one semi-long term injury away from the scrap heap. He knows it, we know it.

2016 is the final frontier for our john. Personally, if he became our second tall - I think he could be anything. Adding the defensive string to his bow would help his ability to influence games and have an impact outside of forward 50.

He looks like he has been avoiding weights training for his whole life. Too light for the pack crashing forward some are trying to sell here.
Lol. I don't know what you think a forward is. The only monsters are hawkins and cloke. The latter cant run out of sight on a dark night.

Talking to mates yesterday about his impact in the game and the consensus was we're a better team with him in it. Not so much of the pocket focussed forward entry that suits Sarge's suicide style. Crumbers could act where they're most damaging and every forward50 had potential.
I love Jay but he's been killing himself getting marks for a while now with his extreme leads. If he goes and Dixon comes over Butch has to stay.

There is a continuum from Eddie Betts to Cloke. I don't know where you think Butcher falls but do you disagree that he needs more muscle?
Betts is just-as-big / bigger through the upper body than Butch. Seriously. I can only assume the club has held him back from bulking up - even guys with genetically lean builds can pack on more muscle than he has.
