Confidence.

It's no surprise that after he did all that work up the ground and took that mark he kicked the goal and never looked like missing.

His kicking action as a junior and in his first few games was rough, but they generally went straight, because he was up and about and the world was his oyster.

Since he's been injured, frozen out and had thousands of bogans hanging shit on him he's turned into Ian Baker-Finch. Big surprise.

The other things is ... I keep comparing him to Schulz - Basically a disappointing, arguably failed, 1st round pick. Finally Schulz moved on to Port for peanuts! (Thank you Richmond!!). A snapshot comparison of their first FIVE years:
View attachment 163207

Butcher averaging more kicks, more handballs, more disposals, more goals, more behinds, and more tackles. (OK, OK, more out-on-the-fulls too! :$)
Then the first year he is able to get his body right, we cut him from our list and trade him to another club for peanuts! Now that is "Deja Vu"!!!
Schulz played in defence at Richmond as well as forward.

Yep. Only other guy on our list capable of doing that is Chad.

And if Hogan or Patton or Bruce or Darling executed that exact passage of play we'd be treated to breathless prose from the footy media all week.

Instead, sections of his own supporter base is all, "SCHPUD DELIST".

A damning fact is that in 6 years at Port Butch has not developed a consistent goal kicking routine.

His run-up, ball drop and kicking action changes almost every kick he takes.

This not only is an indictment on Butch but raises questions about the coaching he has received.
I would be raising questions if there were numerous players on this list who simply haven't developed. Fact is that a lot of our players over the last few years have consistently improved in a number of facets of their game. With Butcher, it's like we are seeing the exact same player today, as we saw three years ago. I'd be more inclined to think Butcher is an isolated case, rather than the norm when it comes to development at our club.

At the end of last year when questioned on Butch's future, Ken said that you tend to hold onto the big guys because it takes a while for them to get it together.

Based on that I can see him getting a lifeline, even if it's a rookie spot.

Could have layed a shepherd after giving off the hands but that's being picky!
His run up at goal is so short... Surely he isn't allowing himself enough time to get into rhythm

I'm sure it's been tried, but he really needs to try to emulate his field kicking action. Bit of a Schulzy run-in, at a decent clip, and swing around on his natural arc. This is how he did it against the Dogs in 2011.

I know it's been mentioned before, but getting a hold of that crazy diamond Ben Perkins wouldn't go astray.

The guy took Tredders from almost where Butcher is now (pure yips mind you) to more than reliable.

As an entirely different cat he might be able to get through where the sports scientists haven't.

Ben is a mate of mine, he's a genius and a nut rolled up in one, and I know he is keen to help Butch - the club just has to give him a buzz.

Not sure why they haven't, it might be worth it.

Perkins is more a "technique" coach correct ?
While Butchers technique has flaws, there's also a glaring confidence/mental aspect .. ie the yips, that also needed addressing - or he gets turned into a defender.

Tredders was worse vis-a-vis yips over technique.

So, just watched the replay of his mark and goal.

He started the chain of events by leading hard to the back flank and then obviously charged up the field to finish off.

Is anyone in our team that isn't Chad Wingard capable of that?
Ebo did a similar thing in the elimination final last year, but everyone was in God Mode that day.

His kick and approach looks so much more natural here.. did that double hip opo two years ago mess the mechanics of his legs or what?!?

In that video at least he took a big enough run up to get enough momentum through the ball to make the distance from 40+ out. It seems he won't take the extra steps these days and risk losing accuracy which is pointless if you can't make the distance. If Butcher had Cam O'Shea's two shots and the same results we'd never hear the end of it, I believe this was Ken's point post game.

Was more than satisfied with Butcher's effort on the weekend, it's no coincidence that was one of the rare games this year where the forward line functioned well & we've been able to lock it in there given his ability to bring the ball to ground & how much defensive pressure he applies to defenders which is something Lobbe just doesn't bring to the table when he's plonked up forward.

As summed up in previous posts i've enjoyed following the emotional rollercoaster of his career that's been full of highs early & lows recently, I don't think there's been a player the supporters have truly wanted to make the grade more than this lad.

I still believe there's an AFL footballer in there & he could be a late bloomer as he does most things right, he just needs some massive help in the offseason to overhaul his set shot kicking routine/action if he can get it right he could be a handy 2nd tall complimenting Dixon going forward or at least serviceable depth.

SoS Ben Perkins, come on Ken just reach out for some extra help i'd hate to see this blokes career end prematurely.
