Justin Westhoff at the set shot is no better then John Butcher.
Unless he's 40m out on the boundary line.

Only Chad Wingard, Jay Schulz and Travis Boak are up to the standard required.
I might not be able to back it up with stats but Boaky is also on my "uh oh" list for set shots.

Yeah but Butcher's misses can be more theatric and that's why they stand out more than they probably should. :D

When that happens some people totally ignore the rest of his game. Same goes for Pittard.
In times gone by he could have created 6 goals out of nothing but some will concentrate on the one or two glaring cock ups and totally ignore the rest.
IIRC there was a game in Sydney where something like that happened.

I have no evidence to back this up but my belief is Westhoff's set shots went to shit post Gold Coast missed game winner. In his first season he was absolutely clinical.
When he started off he was a dead eye dick from around 40 or closer. Nowadays he can kick from further out but is not as reliable.

I remember him being a bit of a dead eye in 2012 when Primus kept him in the F50 as support for Schulz. He didn't play any rippers but would bob up for a camero and was kicking straight.

Crashing packs was reasonably important yesterday considering how many crumbing goals we kicked. Certainly sometimes Butch gets caught out of position and has to resort to nullifying a contest rather than going for the mark, but just as often this is due to a poorly placed kick coming into the forward line. Either way it's better that he's putting the effort in to make the contest, rather than not bothering at all, as has occasionally been the case in the past when he's completely devoid of confidence.

He didn't lack any confidence in the first half, he'd kicked 3.0 and was doing everything that could be expected of him. Started the third quarter with a strong contested mark, but the badly sprayed set shot no doubt would've played on his mind. The rest of the quarter didn't bring a whole lot of opportunity up forward as we only had two more shots on goal, due to the drop in work-rate from the mids. But, I'll concede that he wasn't doing enough work up the ground during this time. I thought his work-rate improved in the last quarter, along with the rest of the team.

Perfect world, sprayed set-shots are a thing of the past for Butch and if they do happen he doesn't lose confidence. But we all know that he's coming from quite a long way back here, it's not going to be perfect straight away, if ever. I think he's undeniably improved his kicking at goal over the off-season, and I reckon his confidence will only continue to grow if he keeps it up.

Again, I didn't think he was great yesterday, there's absolutely room for improvement. But he wasn't too far off the mark.
for me it's the small things he's doing which are giving him a pass mark at the moment. repeat efforts to get to contests, & these sprayed misses, they're not the horrendous off the side of the boot kicks he was doing previously, he's making decent contact, much greater technicians have missed the one's he did yesterday. you see westhoff miss those quite regularly. his 3rd goal from the set, i've never once had that much confidence that he'd kick one ever.

Butcher unquestionably straightened us up, provided a target and brought other forwards into the game when brought in last season.

I don't disagree that he needs to exert more influence, but the right type of player can be a catalyst for better performance from those around him, and I am a firm believer that Butcher did that last year

So am I. We just seemed to play much more interesting and exciting football with him in the side.

I'd love to see a game with Dixon and Butcher together. Dixon is more a wrestler/pack marker. Butch the pack crasher. Would be a joy to see 2 or 3 defenders trying to hang off Dixon then see Butch just skittle them.

It's bound to happen soon, 11 goals in his last 4 games is not too shabby.

The very fact that Paul Stewart, who did nothing in the SANFL the week before was brought in ahead of Butcher would seem to state that John is out of favour.
Or it could be that Stewart is a very different player compared to Butcher and was brought in to provide a different skill set?

I think all that is is the coaching group sending a very clear message to John that if he wants to be part of the team he cant just have one or two good SANFL games like has happened in the past, he needs to set the field on fire.

I think he's just at a point now where he really needs to prove he's got game before he'll be let back on the field, but not that it won't happen.

Sorry to intrude, but from memory the year before Westhoff was drafted he kicked some ridiculous tally for Centrals. Something like 39.4 for the year?
when he was a forward his accuracy was amazing
in the running role his accuracy has been left wanting.

tired legs me thinks
