I'm under no illusions about Butcher being able to mark against good defenders, he won't unless he comes over the back of the pack. However he can do that when others draw the attention of the defenders.
And he is mobile and can snaffle a few off the ground when play gets mixed up. That occasional demonstration of crumbing ability has always bumped up his figures when his set shot kicks have failed.
He's by no means the answer to our lack of a fit and/or competent FF but he is clearly better than Dixon.
Oh my.

When the ball is delivered to Dixon out in front instead of on his head he will do his job, then also peel the 2 and sometimes 3 gorillas off his back he will take his fair share of marks. As much as i like butch he would have done no better in our current form.

I still think there is a bloody good footballer in there somewhere. He just needs to believe it to.
And he needs to want it. Thats the most critical part of this all. its all work rate, he needs to start to dominate in the SANFL contested marks, and convert them into to goals, not just easy goals like in his last game. He needs to win games of his own boot!

Dixon is a forward who struggles when we get pasted in the midfield. Delist.

In all seriousness, assuming Dixon's body is sound, is it worth throwing him in the middle for a few bounces to get a feel for the game. At the moment he's barely sighting the ball and when he does he's usually being triple teamed reminiscent of Hawthorn on Fev when he was on 99 goals.

We know he doesn't need a lot of it to have an impact, but we need to find a way to work him into games.

Long story short bring in Butcher to throw his body around, provide another target and make space for him

Come on mate, why you trying to ruin the fun of all the people who love seeing our one key forward triple teamed and have no chance at impact while an inside mid-come half forward becomes our main key forward for the day? It's the way footy's going, obviously.

How is he not proven? Every AFL game I've seen him play he's at least had a crack. Amazing when he gets a decent run he does okay. He needs more than 3 in a row before we can make judgement. Honestly couldn't be any worse than that insipid performance we saw yesterday.
If he was proven he would have come in for Schulz when Howard did. Even when Howard was dropped he didn't get picked. Having a good crack doesn't mean SFA unfortunately.

Sure he cant kick but those last games last year **** he was having a red hot go
And the crowd were behind him and so was the team and his confidence was sky high give the lankey prick a month of solid A'S footy and let him either make it or break it

yep

in today's game where kicking out of bounds is a penalty, we need to offer our defenders a target (release valve) for the emergency kick. Who better than Westhoff and Butcher to play this role. For me, Butcher would have the right attributes to play CHF and race back to provide a target.

where at the stage already..............what have we got to lose

They did. It was the sure sign of desparation.

I'm glad it happened, we popped the Dixon-in-the-ruck cherry and it paves the way for more in the future. Could kill Westhoff or Jacksons usefulness entirely.
Ken in pre season - 'I can tell you we won't be using Dixon in the ruck at all'

Round 4 and Lobbe is being slaughtered in the ruck while we have 3 inside 50s for the entire game. Dixon into the ruck.

Meanwhile in the last 3 weeks Trengove has a grand total of 0 hitouts.

It was pretty obvious to all and sundry that Howard was chosen to come in to give lobbe ruck support against Jacobs. It wasn't about choosing Howard as a forward over butcher at all. It was about the next best 2nd ruck option to combat a guy who regularly hurts us.
