Looks like we're getting serious about improving his kicking.

I like this..........very very much. All the Butch haters can go and suck a fat one. I'll never give up on Butch until he does, and or the club does. He was recruited to Port for a reason.

He's young, and needs to gain confidence. Anyone that bags his ability is going to cop my wrath. Or you go and coach him yourself.

To all the baggers of Butch, we need him. We need him to come good. We need him to feel he is wanted at this club.

Spent a year doing research into this system (the 3D analysis) last year. Alec popped in a couple times to see how we were doing. Really, really interesting stuff. We had some success with our group of bowlers(cricket) we gave feedback to based on this type of analysis. Hopefully, this points butch in the right direction. Seems like his goal kicking has been better of late.

Can't wait to see how he goes next year!

I think Butcher has a lot of talent, but has learned everything wrong.

Doesn't know how to use his body in contests, because he never needed to.
Doesn't know when/where to lead, because he never needed to.
Doesn't have a proper set shot routine, because he never needed to.

I'm not sure how much of this stuff can be learned after you've "made" it, but hopefully he can improve his output tenfold. I don't believe he will ever be worth the pick we spent on him, but I do think he can reach Leigh Brown (in his collingwood years), and certainly Kozshitzke levels of output.

He has pace, height, and good hands. He can easily have an impact if he starts learning instead of playing (if that makes any sense?). The guy needs to start working a lot harder if he is going to be the next Tredrea, and unfortunately that simply doesn't happen very often. If we want another Tredrea we are going to have to get them elsewhere, but Butcher can be taught to fill a specific need, and have a decent impact IMO.
You cant have talent...........and get all the other things wrong that you mentioned. You cant have both. Your post is so contradicting.

Calling him the Future at his young age was wrong. A young boy, coming into a passionate club, following into Warren Gary Tredreas boots. A young boys mind is going to frizzle. Wazza had no footsteps to follow in our AFL journey. He just took it and shook it. I remember when Wazza was horrible too. We all called for his head, we all called for Wazza to go back and be centre half back, because he couldnt kick for shit.

Give this kid time. Like we gave Warren time. We gave Warren lots of time. All you impatient pricks, go and support melbourne.

Currently the only other player I would consider dropping Butcher for would be a fit Redden. I've heard people at the club rate him as one of our best natural forwards, but I prefer him in the ruck.

If Butcher can play our the season, have an uninterrupted pre-season, and continue 2014 without injury issues... I think we will see some very good things.

Like the suggestion on Redden. If Lobbe can continue what he's doing now, having a 205cm Redden in the forward line clunking marks and relieving the ruck would be amazing.

I had a look at the first round of the 2009 draft.. that is injury city right there.
Butcher (back, hammy, hips)
Scully (degenerate knee)
Trengove (2012 destroyed by injury, which needed some Dank supplements)
Morabito (3rd? knee reco)
Pittard (hips, hammy, being a skinny Gremlin)
Menzel (4th knee reco)
Howard (hip)
Lucas (hammy's)
Rohan (broken shin)

Does anyone else see a bit of josh Kennedy in butcher? Similar stories, Kennedy took 4-5 seasons to become a gun. Wobbly goal kicking and injuries. In his first 11 games he had 22 goals. Identical to butch. Once he got his body right and found a comfortable kicking action for himself, albeit awkward, he's become a monster of the comp at 196cm and 100 kilos. Took patience and time, to get body etc. right.

Patience. Nice post.

Some good decent work going into Butch.
What exactly do you think they're going to want him to work on? What is it they're trying to tune? He seemed to kick pretty straight in his 'earlier' days.
There is no set way on how he or anyone should lineup or have a shot on goal. Just interesting to see what it is they're going to try and change.
Unless he's going to play a big part in AFL LIVE 2014 for PS3 :D

You'd imagine ball drop and consistency of routine on a basic level and then no doubt some biomechanical stuff that the 3D cameras will pick up at an advanced level.

Quarterbacks in the NFL are always working on their mechanics, from flawed youngsters like Tebow to Superbowl-laden Hall of Famers like Tom Brady.

It's amazing we're only just starting to really get into this level of forensic analysis with setshots, given how they're often the difference between winning and losing, finals or an August Mad Monday.

Definitely be keeping a close eye and interested in the results.
Another one of those things that's changed the club.
An article on here the other day in which we had only a handful of GPS's to be able to use and now we've got this setup for 1 particular player (maybe some others players had a dabble).
Amazing.

He drops the ball like he couldn't care if it goes through it not, some urgency and pride would go a long way in his set shot routine and his game in general!
He drops the ball like he has no confidence. Maybe he is listening and reading to all your bullshit posts. As bad as you all think he is, we have won a few with the Butch in our team. Our we carrying him ? Yes......but we will be rewarded. I'd hate to see him smashing it for another team.

WTF are you talking about. Terrible post RIT. Urgency and Pride???

I am confused.

The kid lacks confidence. Probably reads bigfooty and every second pimply fat dickhead that bags him and starts to believe he's shit

Nothing like Josh Kennedy. If Butch clicks and decides to be confident, i see him as a Tredders. All over. But he needs to want it. Tredders built his arse up in the gym too. Butch just needs to want his game. Someone needs to chat with him.

Ken Hinkley grabs Johnny Butcher by the ear. " Your Coming With Me Boy "

If Ken cant sort out Butch, no one can, or will.......We will have to wait and see.

Neck minnut. The Sarge is saying, i'm holding this ****ing forward line up guys. Guys ?? Westy ??? Chad

I am one of Butchers biggest fan around these parts, simply put, he just lets the ball roll down his hand and on to his boot with his head looking anywhere but at his boot laces. By some urgency I mean take the mark and get back quickly, hold the footy with a good strong grip and approach the goals like you want to kick the goal, guide the ball onto his boot and kick through the thing. By Pride I mean watch the ball from the hand to the boot, keep the head over the ball and follow through like your proud of where the ball is to end up. Well at least this is how I was taught to kick a goal, you may call it confidence, I say it's a bit of Pride in football.

He seems to be a laconic type of bloke, typical country lad without a bother in the world. But I have seen many of country footballers with white line fever. I am a different bloke outside of work hours, and I work 38 hours a week, all i ask Butch for is 2.5 hours of arrogance and confidence!

Apart from his confidence when having set shots the main difference to his game now Vs when he started is his aerial game.
That IMO is 100% down to his hip injuries, once that comes back we will see a totally different player. All he has to do now is to get through the rest of the season and do a full pre season before next year.

You are mistaking the symptoms for the disease. It is a confidence problem, very much a mental issue and it leads to the technique flaws you see under pressure. In golf it's called the yips and you try anything to overcome it including rushing / removing your routine or altering your technique. Unfortunately as it is greatly mental it can take time to remedy. Bedding down a solid and repetitive routine will certainly help and I'm sure he is working closely with a sports psych to get his mental routine set also. This is why it is so important for him to keep playing. The more often he is put in a situation the more comfortable he should become.

Yeah man,

Give me a cuddle ok babe.

<3

So, I have an opinion, but thats not allowed, as you have an opinion?

How about you taste my tears and we cuddle up tonight babe ok <3.

Maybe a little more time should be spent giving your opinion with intelligence rather than abuse towards all who you don't agree with. Or is intelligence from you asking that little bit too much?

Based on lobbe's ability to surprise us and just click into gear then I have hope for butcher still. But dam I'm gettin impatient!! Right now I'm leaning towards my preferred setup being with Lobbe and redden rotating the forward / ruck

I kind of see it as the opposite, it's like he's thinking of too many little things as he's taking that set shot. I think it's been repeated several times on this thread, if he's changing his routine, it has to become routine. It reminds me of Nick Riewoldt a few years back, overthinking his routine, kicking with his upper body arched over etc.

Changing a routine mid-season has a lot of that added pressure as well.

I think I've only seen him play with arrogance and confidence once, and that was against Essendon in 2011. Jumping over guys from 3 back, kicking a bag. I think the arrogance and confidence will come after some solid games. I hate the arrogant looking players who have nothing to show for it, like Luke Tapscott or Luke Brown.
