In addition to the aforementioned findings, a broad body of research suggests that choking, which is thought to be the underlying mechanism of Type 2 yips, can be attributed to dysfunctional attentional foci (see Hill et al., 2010, for a review). For example, the execution of skilled movements can be disturbed by an attempt to monitor or consciously control one’s own skilled movement (i.e., self-focus). Alternatively, the processing of task-irrelevant information (i.e., distracting thoughts) can lead to suboptimal processing of task-relevant information and might eventually result in choking. The assessment of focus of attention is thus relevant to identify possible performance-deteriorating attentional strategies in yips-affected golfers.
