he is so far behind the rest of his draft due to injuries and he is a KP. Some of his draft class has only just started to show their picks worth. I cant wait for his first full preseason under burgess. once he is fitter stronger and more confident in his body, his kicking, marking and entire game will skyrocket.... then half of you will be eating your words!

or maybe i will....

Agreed. He was considered the best key forward in the 2009 Draft after doing well at the Draft Camp & kicking 40 goals for Gippsland.

I want to persist with him for the rest of the season and get a full preseason into him and then judge.

I'll be in the corner ducking for cover now.

If we had a better alternative, I'm sure Butcher wouldn't be in the side ATM. The problem is, look at the alternatives:

Redden: Would be ideal, but he's not an option because he's out injured for the year.

Nick Salter/Daniel Stewart: Both in their mid-20's, both in poor SANFL form that doesn't warrant a call-up, both almost certain to be delisted at the end of the year. Why bother? If we must play somebody who's not gonna do much, we may as well play somebody who might have some upside in the future.

Renouf: Dinosaur. His forward work makes Butcher look like Nick Riewoldt, so playing him would lead us to needing to play Lobbe elsewhere. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Mason Shaw: Even less ready for AFL than Butcher is.

Yep, so ultimately it's a question of whether we bring in Renouf for Butcher or persist with giving Butcher AFL time.

To think I was called an idiot and laughed at for suggesting we leave him out of the side for this week.
hearing you Amstaff. I started this thread so you can only imagine what i have copped. Sometimes a dose of reality isnt widly excepted. Gotta play Renouf and free up Lobbe for time in the forward line. Gotta play Westhoff forward, Gotta leave Shultz at home, Gotta play Butch up the ground and as the plus one in defence. Any one else notice today his brilliant spoiling? Would have been very well received if only it was in our back line and not forward line. We are carrying some very tired boys who have put in all year and i admire their efforts week in week out.

Sounds like Salter played a bit further up the ground. 20 disposals, 6 clearances, 5 I50.

I'm a little on the fence, but I think it's probably worth giving Butch a break from AFL as he's struggling to contribute. To say non-competitive performances at the Magpies is excusable because of the poorer standard is rubbish.

It completely opened up our forward line, there was spaxe and pretty much every entry was effective. When he was on the field it was so crowded due to his poor leads, i was at the game, the camera was not following where he was leading too and it was horrible and incohesive. when butcher went off monfries had so much more space and room to lead into. 6 goals to monfries with butcher off the field, nuff said.

bahhahahahahahha.

ok let me catch my breath so i can laugh again.

so the forward line was so crowded because butch was there??

explain to me how that works please?

did he drag 14 defenders with him??

does half our team hang around to hear his stand up routine??

or was the forward 50 vacant in the 4th qtr because we broke from halfback with quick run and 2 clean handballs followed by a long direct kick.

think about it mate.

drawing the conclusion that since monfries kicked 6 goals after butch went off that butch going off is the reason monfries kicked 6 goals is the stupidest thing i have heard today.

totally disregards that our good run started at halfback, that monfries actually earned those goals through skills hard running and one of his best features (keeping his feet often in contests).

I'm saying it was crowded due to his poor leads. Its not hard to understand what that means... if two players lead two different ways it creates more space for each player but if one player leads like a headless chook into the same area or blocks the run of other forwards e.g. Schulz and Monfries it limits the space avaliable to those forwards. It's easy to say it has nothing to do with Butcher when you are watching the camera missing all of the off ball stuff. Added to that fact is your wrongful opinion that it had NOTHING to do with Butcher and was all the hbf taking risks out of the backline when the ball was rarely even in geelongs 50% of the ground in the last quarter...

I wouldn't mind giving salter a go for the gold coast and Fremantle games considering his career is on the line. On saying that however, butcher could gain some confidence with a few against hold coast, but I've been saying that about butch the last half of this season.

throw out the hasnt had a pre season b##s##t. This applies to mids and runners not key forwards. Butch has had plenty of time to play himself into form. FOR THE RECORD, dont sack him but reinvent him. I am a butch fan but not going into finals 013 and certainly not in the forward line. You can spend time money and the best technology around on how to kick the ball, but if you cant get the bloody ball in the first case, kicking technology and even NASA arent going to help.

I could not disagree with this more. A big preseason is important to everyone, especially with the fitness levels and running power required to play AFL football in 2013.

Apart from all those big games we've already won with Butcher in the side.

We need games into him, and if we drop him our choices to replace him are Renouf, Shaw or D.Stewart.

Ok then.

Let's just accept mediocre performances Primus style.

I wouldn't be trading him. Hes got another year on his contract anyway.

But, he has to be out of the side this week. In 120 minutes of football in the last 2 weeks hes managed a combined total of 1 kick, which was a fluke. Its not good enough.

I think the constant 'didn't have a pre season' stuff is a bit of a copout, but he deserves a full pre season next year to put some strength into his hips and see what he can do.

Nup. Different strokes for different blokes. Mids, runners etc is demanding and endurance training. Rucks, key forwards backs etc body strength, reaction time and short sharp sprint work. Body positioning and awareness/reaction training. But if you want to persist playing him forward, feel free. I,ve seen enough.
