We have been giving him too many chances i just dont want him to be a guy who leaves us and turns into a gun somewhere else , which i could see happening.

That said he is a complete liability playing atm and how much better did we look today when he wasn't on the field..

That's a bit harsh.

He needs a injury free pre season.

We can go on about limited pre-seasons and not a lot of games under his belt, confidence low.

The problem is none of that matters in the scheme of Port improving.
Sure if he can get better, great chuck him in the SANFL until he finds form.
If he doesnt he stays at that level or leaves SANFL as well.

Why bother keeping in a player who is average SANFL level just because he may eventually play well.

That is what got Port into this mess we are only recovering from.

Keeping players on the list that do not stand up, on the hope that maybe they may do so.

To think I was called an idiot and laughed at for suggesting we leave him out of the side for this week.

Fair comment. I'm a Butch fan but reckon he should not play AFL again year - anyway form says he shouldn't as it will send the wrong message - gold passes etc. Not yet with the 'must dump' call.

Yep totally agree.

I haven't given up on him yet thats all I'm saying.

we were always going to lose the cats match, butcher was always going to be playing out of his depth in 2013, so there is no point getting surprised or irrational about the short term

it is about building for a premiership and sticking with big guys who take longer to develop like Lobbe, Redden and Butcher

I'd rather Salter or maybe even Shaw. Renouf's a liability forward and will only detract from Lobbe in the middle. It'd be nice to have Redden fit.

yep, giving Shaw a taste is not a bad idea

The thing with Butcher is that because of his injuries and no pre-season, he's never developed physically these past two years. Which is fine when you're a young kid playing your first few games of AFL, but when your opponent knows a bit about your strength and weaknesses, you need to have that confidence in your body to hit the pack hard.

He'll be fine. It's not gonna happen against a side like Geelong. I said I'd drop Butcher in the gameday thread, but I forgot about Blee (who didn't do anything wrong) - he goes out for Jonas. John gets one more shot against Gold Coast.

If we had a better alternative, I'm sure Butcher wouldn't be in the side ATM. The problem is, look at the alternatives:

Redden: Would be ideal, but he's not an option because he's out injured for the year.

Nick Salter/Daniel Stewart: Both in their mid-20's, both in poor SANFL form that doesn't warrant a call-up, both almost certain to be delisted at the end of the year. Why bother? If we must play somebody who's not gonna do much, we may as well play somebody who might have some upside in the future.

Renouf: Dinosaur. His forward work makes Butcher look like Nick Riewoldt, so playing him would lead us to needing to play Lobbe elsewhere. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Mason Shaw: Even less ready for AFL than Butcher is.

This x 1000%

i wouldnt be that against dropping butch as two bad games in a row is cause enough but i wouldnt be flying off the handle about dropping him for the rest of the season or trading him or giving up on him.

that kind of stupidity is the best way to find yourself never having good a key forward.

anyway , ild keep butch in against gold coast and see if he can turn it around but ill back kern whatever he decides there

Was our structure really that poor in the last quarter and a half?

You can only get away with mid-sized players kicking goals for so long. Ultimately, you need 2 KPFs to consistently win finals. It's why the Bulldogs couldn't make a GF and why Carlton can't get near the top 4, let alone the top 8.

yeah because him being off the field had everything to do with our increased run off the hbf in the 3rd and 4th qtrs.

wtf
It completely opened up our forward line, there was spaxe and pretty much every entry was effective. When he was on the field it was so crowded due to his poor leads, i was at the game, the camera was not following where he was leading too and it was horrible and incohesive. when butcher went off monfries had so much more space and room to lead into. 6 goals to monfries with butcher off the field, nuff said.

You gotta earn your spot....and shit lets be honest half assed effort sshouldn't be tolerated....

I understand developing him...but looking next year for him
