Heard a brief discussion on triple m this morning that butcher may never play again? Apparently this claim came from Warren Tredrea and is there any validity to this claim? No doubt Port would be looking at him very closely with some hard list management decisions to be made by the end of the season

Not really earth shattering news I would say - probably just meant his form is unlikely to warrant an AFL game for the rest of the year, and he'll then be delisted.

No surprise there. He's being played in the back lines at the moment in the SANFL. He never is or was going to be a backman. They're playing him there to clear out some space for Harvey and Howard who still deserve a shot. Butcher is done and this has clearly been decided. Let's hope he leaves with an SANFL flag to his name.

With the rookie list not a rookie list anymore, when he's delisted someone else will likely take him as a rookie. If there was another top 10 pick KPF with injury issues, his age, that was delisted by another club this year, a lot here would scream it's a low risk / high reward to be putting said player on the rookie list in the hope of turning him around.

I hope that's not the case but certainly understandable if it is.

I wonder what Butcher could have been if he had gone to a different club.

He came to our club with injury issues at a time where we had no money or expertise to deal with it. Who knows if his issues were nipped in the bud, perhaps he could have developed.

Coming to Port, or not moving on during our dark days was probably an error in hindsight.

I'd seriously doubt another club would pick him up sadly.
It depends on what a particular club thinks his problems are, and what resources they might be able to throw his way. Without going back and researching it my memory is that before we picked him up Josh Mahoney was discarded by 3 clubs due to issues with concussions and migraines.

Disappointing but been on the cards for what... 3-4 years? Life goes on.

Dougal Howard is the man we're all going to be pinning our hopes on this time next year.

Yeah I don't think there is much more we could have done to help him with injuries that's just bad luck. I just don't think we have the best track record when it comes to the mental side of the game and helping players deal with expectation.

x2. He can't kick. Forget the rest of the story, the guy cant kick, no one wants that.

His other great weakness was that any ounce of body pressure on him and you had him covered. His marking just never developed to the point where he could take 1:1 grabs where a defender was applying body pressure.

Howard is years away. Next year we'll be hoping Harvey continues to develop and starts being worthy of selection. Shaw is a chance but personally I dont think he has what it takes.

I know, but I reserve the right to pin all my hopes squarely on the kid's shoulders [emoji14]

Usually if we delist a player, if they get picked up elsewhere I'm not wishing them to succeed elsewhere. I think 'why couldn't they do that at Port?'.

Butcher will be the exception. I hope he does get picked up and can eek out some sort of AFL career elsewhere. It was just a cluster**** of injuries, coming to us when we had a lack of support for said injuries, poor coaching till Hinkley and then with Hinkley not being backed in for a run of games to establish confidence and form at AFL level.

mason sort of reminds me of a slightly lazier, less talented westhoff. not saying he won't make anything of his career, but he's really been disappointing all injuries aside. will be going into his 4th season on the list without much of a chance of starting round 1 next year, unless he goes beastmode over the summer.

Carlton offered him 400k a year a few years ago. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if he took the money.
