Kennedy was named on the bench, if he was any chance to play surely he would have been named on the field, I'm expecting Butler to take Kennedy's place tomorrow

Would be awkward considering Butler is in Perth and played WAFL today.

I can only think they opted for pace because with Butler, Waters, A Selwood etc down back they are good but all similar one paced.

I like smith in our side because of the pace factor, but surely butler would be nice in there for that "get out" kick - he is usually very accurate down there (yes I know we have Hurn but if he's being watched closely he may fade out).

The only thing I can think of is that we have gone for more pace because of the likes of Dalhaus, Gia, Higgins & Cooney.

What does Adam Selwood provide that Butler doesn't? Because Butler definitely has Selwood covered in disposal skills and decision making.

And hardness. However as another poster pointed out, kicking and decision making is better. A lot better.

Still, I hope Smith shows off his pace if he lines up.:thumbsu:

I presune they just want to get another run into him if he didnt even travel as emergency. Will slot back in very soon.....if not injured in wafl

theres a bigger picture i suspect-getting gametime into younger players for next season-weighed up against a butler or a waters who have peaked as serviceable players, but ultimately holding back players who can potentially take it another level higher..the run+carry style players..in short, its transition time! butler admits it in his own words..
(i didnt mention a.selwood above coz he's in a different class IMO,as a negator..and i know many disagree)

I think this is correct. There has to be a point where we start playing some of our players that have shown promise and been on the list for 2/3 years. We have a heap of HBF who look in good form. I would of thought it was someone else to make way other than Butler though but maybe they think his impact is limited.

I think that's rubbish.

We should be targeting a flag over the next 2/3 years while Cox/Glass/Kerr are still in the team.

Butler should be one of the first picked; it's not the time for youth promotion, it's time to go hell for leather for a flag. ;)

not saying youth promotion as such..butler may well be back in next week..but for woosha its a juggling act - he wants to have a tilt at the flag asap-everyone knows he's got 2 windows-so he has to be grooming phase 2 players as well-getting the building blocks in place..giving them gametime..maybe horses for courses also, but at any oppurtunity available,to be giving the next best thing a run on the paddock..IMO smith has lots of upside,as seen last season..he's been injured and out of form, but should come back..he's also the new model-fast,tall and versatile-front and back..butler,not so much -quality,yes.. having said that butler could be around for quite awhile!

If Butler had played 20 games last year he would probably have been AA squad at least. Butler is in his prime footy years and the second best kick in the team (behind Hurn), a sure tackler and fantastic desicion maker. I really don't like the implication the quality of our selection panel when a person with those skills not being best 22.

this is only big footy - you can sleep well at nights

dont fret paran..might just be horses for courses..embley wore green?..butler might be back this week..but other guys still need to be rotated when possible is all i'm saying..creative juggling?

Butler is a long way from the second best kick in our team.

They dropped him and for a reason, i backed Smith all summer and it seems like the match committee have as well. Not at any particular players expense.

The tendency of our backline to move the ball slowly in seen on these forums as a work rate issue from our midfield, when really it's the inability of our defenders to create space.

butler is more of a small defender than smith.the eagles have a tendancy to let small forward kick a few, bring butler back i say

We got caught out a couple of times goalside in the Dogs fwd line. Yes, maybe it should be a winger plugging the gap, but I feel that Butler would not have let it stay unplugged. Giving Smith a shot seems to be about developing one element in the game plan - more run from defence. It looked like run from defence, and about 30 minutes of trying to spot up forwards instead of banging it in long, were a couple of things the coaches tried out in the first game.
