IMO Australian Fooball is taken seriously overseas not only by the players who part take in our game but by governments and organisations.

Governments seriously look at the money that can be made staging AFL games.

New Zealand - AFL scheduling games next year. Huge investment by the AFL in grassroots

South Africa - AFL South Africa is funded by North West Academy of Sport, Ausaid and Tattersalls. If you look closely, these are Australian organisations that are investing in South Africa. That's why the government likes it.

AFL PNG is the Papuan organisation. It is affiliated with the Queensland body and gets funding and scholarships from there.

That's why governments are interested....money.

No expats allowed in the International Cup IIRC. Its only for people who are originally from the country competing unless theyve changed the rules recently.

Guess what? We fielded* an indigenous/multicultural team and got thumped - 0 wins, 4 losses and a percentage of 6.94%.

The AFL didn't learn their lesson.

Every American and Canadian I've spoken to had no idea what it was until I told them. This is mostly people in their late 30s.

Most overseas people just couldn't care less about it or don't know about it.

The only reason the sport used to garner any attention from overseas was for its rough nature - it was viewed as a tough man's sport.

Unfortunately the AFL has sanitised the game, and it's now viewed as a novelty.

Generally easier selling ice to eskimos, than selling football to RL fans.

People from other countries generally don't have the baggage that NSW, and to a far lesser degree Qlders have about AFL football.
