This one maybe interesting.

Sean Tasker (also wore 49), Lance Picioane, Matthew Clarke, Kurt Tippett, Josh Jenkins (also wore 20)

I really liked Matty Clarke. I really liked Kurt Tippett. I really like Josh Jenkins. Picioane....I remember him well....but one of those come in and get out type of players.

Sean Tasker....I don't really recall anything exciting from him at all.

So who was our best? Tough one. I think I would go Tippett to be honest. If Tippo had stayed with the Crows I don't think Jenkins could take his spot. Forget how he is playing now, I remember Tippo being that juggernaut in the forward line and taking contested grabs. His kicking was awry at first, but improved over time. Yup...I think I am going with Tippo. Hopefully by the time Jenkins finishes his career I will be saying otherwise. Still liked Clarkey though. Really good Ruckman are hard to find. He was pretty decent.

I loved watching Matty Clarke back in the day. The combination we had with him and Biglands took us a long way to the powerhouse seasons we had in 05-06.
Tippett was a contested marking beast and worked so well together with Walker.

But the most interesting one is Jenkins. He could be so much more if he really put the hard yards in. Another season like last and bigger improvement will see him become my number #4 on top of that list.

I went with Matty Clarke over Sean Tasker. ST was a player who got the most out of himself he could. JJ will/is better than Yippett. The Vic muppet never did a thing with us. Think his nickname was "spaghetti". JJ could be the best of them in time if he continues to improve.

Does anyone have the tippett v Jenkins stats for their time at the crows?

Tippett - 188 goals in 104 game = 1.81average.

Jenkins - 121 goals in 69 games = 1.75 average.

Not much in it, but most importantly jj is on an upward curve. Tippett has stagnated after bursting on the scene. Still ahead because more games & better ruckman, but jj can take kt within a year.

Jj ave goals for last 4 years 1.0 ->1.4 -> 2.0 -> 2.2

Kt ave goals at crows 0.9->2.3->2.1->1.7->1.9

sounds awfully like you are bringing in stats to justify JJ > KT. Truth is the stats don't play into this game. It is about an honest belief in who is the best #4. We all want JJ to overtake KT because he left us. Does not change the fact that KT was bloody good in his Crows days. Jerk now, but he was a bloody good #4 considering his bball background.

I actually mentioned kt > jj in my post & rucking gives him the edge ;)

However, as I suspected jj has continued to improve, whilst kt has stalled & not really become the player we thought when he burst on to the scene.

Not sure I would swap jj now for kt, particularly with the $'s both are on.

Are you suggesting we are not allowed to use stats in our analysis ;)

Got Sean Tasker's autograph at Parabanks Shopping Centre way back in the day and there is an awkward photo of me in my Crows jumper standing kind of close to him but he was signing other autographs at that point...

So clearly the answer is Sean Tasker

hmm ok..

Sean Tasker wore #49 in 1991, but switched to #4 for the 1992 season..

So who was the Crow who got given #4 for the first season but never played a game?

Clarke was a sensational tap ruckman for us for a decade and probably is and was every bit as good as Jacobs. He for mine is our best #4 to date. I do think Jenkins can take that title though if his upward trend to his form continues and he takes his game to even greater heights.

Tippett... was great for our structure... let's the midfield just bomb it in long. Imagine if he was still here with our forward setup.
Yup I fully agree. Walker leads up and kicks goals from 60. Tippo stays in the forward line taking grabs even though 20 guys are hanging onto him. Betts, Cameron and Menzel crumb the floors.

Jenkins is much like Walker in his agility. Not a huge contested mark when our forward line is congested.

Matthew Clarke was a beautifully pure tap ruckman but did little else

Career Season Averages
Games Kicks Handballs Disposals Marks Goals Tackles Hitouts Brownlow

258 4.2 4.7 8.9 2.5 0.1 0.8 17.8 0.15

More marks than I remember and less taps than I would have thought.

Tippett gets the nod for me. JJ is on track to be our best ever #4 but at the moment it's still Tippo. Even when he had the kicking yips he was a contested beast, if a ball went to him one on one you knew there was a good chance we were coming away with it. A free kick or two would've been handy though. He was very unlucky in that regard. Never got free kicks paid, so started exaggerating contact to get them, of course the media jumped on him, so he stopped getting them.

but there was a 52 man squad, right?

someone must've been assigned #4
That's the problem with that list provided by the club; it's only for appearances. There's a whole bunch of players who have been on the Crows list that never made an appearance.

It's lost in the archives. Like how Siggins wore #20, but never in an AFL match.

Tasker was the only player up until 93 to keep that horrible yellow collar on his Guernsey (sorry so did A jarman but the collar suited the long sleeves)

Tippet and Clark are the two best.. Jenkins is on his way though.
