I think I recall Bishop being named our best player in the 2002 finals series.

And really where is Bassett now? If he was any good as a long time footballer he would have made it at the Western Bulldogs especially considering how small their backline was at that stage.
Wouldn't have been hard to be best player during the 2002 finals!
Bishop played like a frustrated wingman. Tried to carry the ball too far, too long, too many times and burnt possession too often.
Was always the weak link in our defence due to being piss weak physically and playing looser than Paris Hilton, and responsible for many of the cheap goals opposition teams got against us throughout his tenure.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. reminds me of throwing out a carton of milk two months past it's useby date that's gone very sour.

I've just found out about all this now.

Bish did the role that was required of him between 2002 and 2004. He had some particularly good games during those years, with a great effort on Richo one that I recall at Aami. He took some pretty good form into the GF in 2004 and was really our best matchup in that game against Bradshaw who was Brisbane's go-to forward.

His last 2 years were disappointing. It seemed as though too much faith was entrusted to him to stand both smalls and talls and he had lost both the speed and reflexes to cover the smaller forwards and had no real body strength to effectively cover the talls.

By all accounts he was a popular player at the club - let's not rubbish the guy at this point in time.

There wouldn't really be anyone on this board who would be disappointed with his delisting. It was the right decision - enough said.
Let's just hope whoever takes his spot next year does a better job.

Re Ezard - I'm pretty surprised but it goes to show that the club feels he has some limitations that were going to stand in the way of a successful career. We'll obviously have another look at him in the PSD or rookie draft if something better doesn't come along. But this way we have set ourselves up to make the most of the draft opportunities we have.

Almost certainly we will go 5 in the main draft and 2 in the PSD.

One thing I thought earlier in the year was that Ezard, Eckermann and Ware would go because they were too small. I thought Ezard might have overcome that with his toughness and bulking up a bit ... but it seems not. Port seem to be keen on those 185+cm, 80+kg young kids who can step right in.

Freo will be happy Bishop retired/delisted, for some reason he always held Tarrant goalless.
I seem to recall Tarrant leading Wakelin on wild goose chase one night at Football Park about 4 years ago and finishing up with about 5 goals.

WTF? Some of the posts in this thread regarding bishop are disgusting.

He contributed more to the Port Adelaide Football club than this entire board combined.

Bishop may not have been much chop last year, but it seriously lacks class to boot him in the arse on the way out the door.

Agree mate, i was shocked. He gave you guys 7 sevens of good service. What people have to realise is that in the last 2 yrs he was asked to take the best mobile forward the opposition had, because chad was found out and moved from CHB and chaplin was still raw. To be fair he was probably not up to it, but as a 3rd defender he gave great service to you. He was by no means a champ, but certainly leaves a sour taste in your mouth to see someone so unappreciated.

That depends if you base the comments on a few people compared to what the majority here have said.................sure he may not have had a good 2005 and 2006 but he will always be a valued member of the Port Adelaide Football Club and long remembered for his efforts in being a part of our first AFL premiership.

I would just like to re-iterate what most normal people here have said. Prior to the last 18 months, Bish did everything you could probably ask of a player. He always did the 'team' things and was used in a variety of ways. He always gave 100% to the team and regularly risked injury to contest a ball that really wasn't his to get.

I know that his last 2 seasons weren't great-but he was an integral part of our success and will be remembered for his contributions during that period.

All the best Bish.

I thought it was more than a few comments actually, i may be wrong however. With his 2005/6 i think he wasn't disgraced what many here seemingly overlook is that he role changed in those yrs! He was asked to play on the better players. I dont think that's his fault, its mark Williams who is responsible for that.

Only if you include the non Port supporters as the overwhelming majority of Port supporters here certainly have not done that.

He also suffered with injuries in 2005 and a slowing down in pace which also impacted on his ability to properly man up on better players he was assigned to.

There is something in that. His reputation was tarnished by being played as CHB and being no good at it, yet sent out to do the same thing week after week. Why it happened I don't know other than that Chocco wanted S Burgoyne and Chad Cornes elsewhere. But with fast leading opposition forwards they might as well have had me out there, I'm much cheaper. It meant a huge surge of relief to fans when he injured his knee, and that's just not right.

Bishop - whilst he was piss poor towards end of last year and even more so this year was very important in 2002 - 2004. Never forget his handball to himself in the back pocket at the MCG in the Grand final - top stuff...

Thanks for the service Bish - Right decision by the club..

Ezard -- mm tough call but not a bad one IMO
That run was the definition of 'backing yourself in' as it were, should be shown to all the youngsters, to do that on the biggest day in the clubs history is truly courageous.

I hope you are not having a go at Port supporters, especially after reading a thread on the crow board and seeing the pot shots at a former captain in Chris McDermott.

PS I really don't recall more than one or two games when Bish played CHB.

Yeah I'm not really kitted out to argue the point. I guess he's often been named on the flank, but my memory of him recently is perpetually chasing fast-leading CHFs.
I think you are both right.

More often that not Port designed Bishop to be on a third tall and play almost a flanking role. The opposition worked out he was a weakness that could be exploited and played a lot of their forward entires through his direct opponent, thus creating the illusion that he was playing at a more integral defensive position than perhaps he should have been or was capable of.
