If he isn't getting 100% effort or close to out of the players maybe in his third year, its not just going to click like a switch

This group has losing entrenched into their mind frame. I hope he can resolve this, the only way, is to win games though

The great Denis used to say it all the time . You try and win everything practice games, Ansett cup games at the time. Winning becomes a habit as does losing. Unfortunately it has become part of the groups culture. Hoping the new young group can rectify this. It’s quite possible many of the mid tier group won’t be part of any future success due to the last 4 to 5 seasons.

Person 1: I’ve never watched Breaking Bad. The missus and I are going to start watching it.

Person 2: oh it’s awesome. But remember when you’re watching it, it really starts off slow and the first season takes a while to get into it. But it builds and then season after season it gets better and better.

Person 1: how good. Can’t wait.

Person 2: you will love it. But remember what I said, you gotta push through the early stuff, to get the good stuff. She might be a hard watch early, but stick it out.

Person 1: yeah, I f**king get. Push through.

Person 1: this show is f***king sh**house

Good analogy. Except I'm watching Season 7 of Baywatch. It started shithouse, stayed shithouse, is still shithouse and looks like it will be shithouse for quite sometime yet.

Yes just like in 2021.

Then you're not watching it properly.

Just wait until Baywatch Nights.

Yelling at the youngest list in the comp, esp the 4 teenagers in the best 22, won't make them stronger, more experienced players
I doubt whether anyone is yelling at our younger players. The anger is firmly directed at the older players, coaches, selection committee and recruiters.

Clarko & Co will turn it around but I believe it won't happen until they make some big calls.

And 2021 could have been a promising start to the rebuild; it's just that Paul Roos ****ed off and left David Noble in a job he fundamentally wasn't up for. Clarkson will at least do better than that.

Oh yeah and our best player got cancer in the twilight of his career. That really ****ed things for a while. Underrated aspect of why we've struggled so much the past couple of years. Cunners was largely the reason we snagged a few wins in late 2021 and if that hadn't happened, he'd probably still be playing and leading in there. Hurts to think about.

I've been away from here because quite frankly IDGAF, but did some linker seriously start this thread? Jeebus...

Is Alastair Clarkson actually an elite coach? has the game gone past him? or is he simply the product of Hawthorns formerly elite list?

Since the start of 2017 Clarkson has only coached a team to a positive record once. This coming in 2018 when the Hawks got dumped out in straight sets, as one of the worst top 4 teams of all time. With 18 seasons under his belt, just half have yielded a positive record with his 19th not looking likely to do so. With a win rate of 56% this compares poorly to other great coaches like Chris Scott with a record of 76%. Scott on the other although born into a great list has managed to have much greater longevity with his first ever losing season coming in 2023. This is due to Scott's ability to adapt and change his game style and roll-over his list. Something Clarkson has shown he is unable to do.
Even Ross Lyon has managed a higher win rate (barely) with 57% and he also has coached far fewer losing records than Clarkson with only 4, although he has coached 4 fewer seasons.

Was Clarkson's golden age of success due to his own coaching prowess or just due to the fact that Hawthorn possessed one of, or if not the greatest team of all time.

I'd like Korn more if he tried to put some balance into these pieces. How Clarko got Hawthorn to 4th in 2018 is anyone's guess.

We need to give Clarko until this time next year - that will be half way through his 5 year deal.

At this stage though people who are saying 'things are on track' are not serious supporters of the club - things are anything but 'on track' and Clarko would be the first to acknowledge that.

Not all of our performances to date are Clarko's fault - there is a lot of history before he arrived - but he does need to own some decisions which have been problematic at best.

As you say.... and this is a fundamental issue

A massive, massive red flag to me was letting the players pick the captains / leadership group and then we ended up with McDonald and Simpkin and supported by Corr. What that says about Clarko and indeed the playong group says a lot.

If this decision happens again next year then I think we should take that as a clear signal that Clarko has checked out - that it has got all too hard for him.

At this stage though I am willing to continue to back Clarko but this idea that he won flags 10 years ago therefore he must know what he is doing is no more happy clapping than backing Shaw or Noble. The only thing that matters is progress and results - so far Clarko is failing on both metrics and he will admit that.

Alot of work to do from here and absolutely no guarantee we will better this year or next year compared to the Noble or Shaw years.

Right now there is 1 team we have an even money chance to beat - 1 team. That is pretty much as bad as it can get 5 years into a rebuild.
Not serious supporters of the club. What a strange conclusion.

Can only hope clarko reads some of that stuff and it motivates him

Too early to say if the game has passed him by. We'll know in a couple of years. The list will be more balanced and the stability of the coaching and development program should start to have an impact.
I just find it very hard to believe that he hasn't seen what other teams are doing and had input from the other coaches on his staff and Barlow on gameplan and tactics.

Chris Scott would benefit from the games at GMHBA and taking over a very mature team that has managed to trade in some stars like Danger and Cameron to keep them propped up. As for him adapting, he didn't do it straight away, he only did when the Demons smashed him and he realised his ball control style wouldn't work anymore.

I’ve genuinely lost some brain cells reading this.

You can’t polish a turd.

He’s coached less than a season worth of games. Lost arguably the most talented player to walk through the doors since Carey (Tarryn). Add to that losing McKay and Logue to an ACL.

He’s playing the long game. He’s drafting the next generation of stars and once they’re ready he clearly backs himself to outsource the additional pieces required to compliment them. Just like he did at Hawks (Gibson, Lake etc.).

Give him a chance to weed out the rest of the crap in the meantime too.

I do agree, we need to start seeing progress, but we already have if you look hard enough. That first half against Freo was enough evidence for me. The other three games we were set up to fail. They’re way better sides than us and so they should be.
