It's deciding who are the better options, and in my view it's not Byrne. I'd rather see others getting game time. But I do bow to the wiser heads of the selection committee. (sort of, had similar feelings about Mench....)

I can't believe this guy's back. I hope he's improved his kicking and decision making 150%. Why would they have brought him in ahead of Prismall

I'm stoked he's back in. During the week I was saying he'd be handy, I couldn't believe it when I saw him in the side. His pace and heart is something that is invaluable to this footy club. Everyone bags his kicking but I've seen him nail blokes lace-out from 40+ metres away on the run so I think it's just a confidence thing in front of goal. He has a tendency to do the freakish as well... e.g. I think he took a contested mark against a ruckmen either last year or the year before? and last year in the grand final when he ducked and weaved around several PTA players was unreal (even though he shanked the kick).

Bottom line is he brings a lot more to the side than many expect as I believe their focus is drawn to his poor goal-kicking accuracy rather than all of the other stuff he does.

so he in the team that he may have taken one contested mark against an unknown side in an unknown year.

if he's got the credentials why not play him?

Which SMALL FORWARD in the VFL is currently in better form than Byrnes has been over the last month?

I'd rather they elevate a player who plays in the position and is in form, rather than bringing in another player, and shuffling around half the side to make room for him.

Not really. According to the VFL website, Byrnes was listed as our second best player against Box Hill three weeks ago, 5th best against Coburg a fortnight ago, and BOG last week.

Compare that to Prismall, who was third best against Box Hill, not even listed against Coburg, and 4th best last week.

Yeah Prismall has been really ordinary hasn't he? only third and fourth best and quite a few BOG's prior to that. Byrnes is a forward so is the obvious replacement for Gamble. Not many at all who would agree with your strange argument. Varcoe had one ok game and is straight in. Work that one out.

Where in my previous post did I say Prismall has been ordinary? I just said Byrnes has been in better form RECENTLY. If being named 3rd and 4th best is ordinary, then those who don't get a mention must be mediocre according to your logic.

As for Varcoe's selection, he was a late replacement for Chapman IIRC. Where does Chapman play again? Oh yeah, as a forward, and one who harrasses and tackles, which is something Varcoe was good at last season, particularly early on. Replacing like for like. What a bizarre notion!

I've been reading some of the past thrends on Byrnes and been a little surprised how harsh some supporters have been on him.

He's 24 years old, played 48 games and has a premiership medallion. Not too bad, yet some are bagging him like he's the worst player ever to put on the Geelong jumper. I think the only thing against him is that he sometimes suffers in comparison to some of the other players in the side. Look at Tim Callan - he's now a regular at the Doggies!

Since he was dropped I've been watching his results in the VFL and noticed that he has been in the best each week. He would no doubt have been told to focus on a few things. He's obviously done that. If they selected Prissa (as much as I think he will be a very good player), it sends the wrong message to other players at the club. Prissa has to fight his way into the side like anyone else. He got his opportunity a few weeks back and, unfortunately, he didn't perform and was dropped the next week. Prissa is only 22 so I hope he'll stick with us.

PS - I heard some idiot in the Hickey Stand stand up and shout that Byrnes was the "worst player to ever play in a Premiership!". Disgraceful call.

Oh good, the 'he is a forward' rubbish. He is not. We try to play him as a forward but a genuine small forward he is just not. Varcoe is hopeless and I don't want him in the side but he is a genuine forward. Gamble is a genuine forward. Byrnes could be a useful midfielder with better composure but I am yet to see that.

He will get plenty of the ball no matter where he plays because he works hard and is tough as but that does not mean he is a forward. Players who can be useful forwards have better polish or other attributes Shannon just does not have.
