A few fleeting comments on 7 of the clubs mentioned by ‘scribe’.

Old Geelong - having survived in 2009, we can now consolidate as we know what's required to win games of footy in C section. Aimin to have our best pre-season ever, and to take that into the season proper.

They rarely seem to meet expectations. I wonder whether the distance from the school makes it difficult to secure a flow-on of players as the Melbourne schools are able to do.

Ajax - Managed to stay in touch with finals contention all season last year, despite suffering the painful setback of the early loss of Dukes. Ritterman and Bleiden are already 'tearing up the track' and we'll be more wise about C section in 2010.

Bernie Sheehy is one shrewd coach. I’d expect the Jackas to be one of the contenders this year particularly if they are able to keep their top talent on the park for the whole year.

Mazenod - we're casting the net wide to snare disgruntled EFL talent and will be bolstering our playing stocks with run, run and run. The young fellas are 'training the house down' already, and we're keen to taste finals action 2010. From then on, who knows what can happen? You've got to be in it to win it.

“Training the house down” at this time of year:confused: I wonder where the “young fellas” with talent are coming from as there didn’t appear to be much in the unders this year.

Caulfield Grammarians - Still scratching our head as to how such a talented list could dominate the grade all year and then miss out on promotion (at least). With the Sinclairs likely to return, we will be driven the same way as Geelong's AFL unit were to atone for the 2008 GF loss.

They were the best team in the H & A in ‘C’ grade this year but failed to flatter in the finals. Their list is strong and with the touted return of the Sinclair brothers they will be the pacesetters.

Beaumaris - our extraordinary BF posting history will be consigned to the archives as we take a fresh, even more professional approach to our footy. Like Jeff Kennett claimed when taking the reins of the Hawks "this is the last time you'll here from me".....until we snare the 2010 flag.

Beauie are the unknown quantity for me. They are the team that seems to raided more than most by the TAC. It’s a credit to them that they produce such good youngsters but it makes it hard to get a consistent level of performance week-in-week-out.

Ormond - Devastated at slipping back after 5 years of positive progress. We still possess the greatest home ground advantage in the VAFA, and were able to blood many young players ue to our horrific injury toll in 2009. They will be better for being exposed to B section senior footy and we will bounce back.

As with all clubs, much depends on keeping the list intact and the club needs a few unders to progress. The club has needed a couple of key position players and ruckmen for a few years. It will be interesting to see how Michael Oaten copes with the transition from junior to senior coaching. His record with the unders indicates he’ll do it well but it appeared to take David Madigan sometime to adjust at De La. Fingers crossed.

Old Camberwell - The young fellas who took us to the exalted U19 North 1 flag are now primed to continue building that 'winning culture' with the new coach ensuring a cleaning out of the playing list. It's like a new dawn for the Wellers, and the resurgence of the club will be on the back of fully home-grown young talent. Exciting times ahead at the Barnyard.

Enthusiastic, committed youngsters with ability can really lift a team. If they stick with the youth strategy and progress some of the successful unders there’s no reason why they can’t be competitive.

Care to elaborate on what you have heard about Parkdale and why it will be a hard gig ???

Just thought you have been very much middle to low end of the road over the last few years without threatening. That is an opinion from a distance. It could be wrong. Parkdale are always tough and proud but there results have been average. We struggle recruiting players, everytime we go that side of town clubs express how hard it is keep players so i am assuming Parkdale go through that every year. Rochford, Boland would be worth plenty locally- the Sullivans must be loyal but could also command dollars

i think Dave Mathews was sacked at Fitzroy in 2007, then coached BTemplestowe for the last two years inc a premiership in 2008. Highly regarded, never met him, what i have heard from a distance i reckon Parkdale will be a hard gig.

Ammo, at this time of year all Rupppo is doing is trying to hold on to its list. Not easy when reserves players get up and leave for money in a lesser league. You need depth across the senior group, any loss of players is disappointing. On the upside we hope to regain 4 (Monzell, B Brennan, M Gaunt and T Smith) from long term injury that will certainly bolster us in 2010. That's Ok but what i will say we had a pretty good run injury wise this year, very important to be successful IMO.

Scribe, you continue to show your genius, i look forward to catching up next year. Your shout!!!!!

what would a trinity lad be doing slumming it in 'c' grade?

New around here, huh?

yep! go to the top of the class.:) much to learn o.t.p. for sure. wide of the mark!!!! but being facetious.........rolling eyes and all that.

just to complete the record, the "slumming" ref was an attempt at humour too. "c" grade looks like producing some top footy next year.

still learning tho........who's aligned with who here for instance.;)

oh never mind, threadworks called off ... i don't have the permissions to do what I was gonna do :D

Damn... yeah, wish that'd been able to happen too mate ;)

Geez KB, another Rupo kid drafted to the AFL... Hinesy's a terrific kid and I really hope he makes it. :thumbsu:

Great news big fella, already can't wait for the season to start. They play cricket all year round, i think there should be a 6 week summer comp- 14 a side- 4x 18min quarters starting 6:30 on a Friday night , maximum of 6 beers per spectator. Not too serious just some light hearted stuff till the real stuff begins. No finals just a cup for top spot.
Rupo's Division

Rupo
OEG
St Bernies
Therry
NOBS
Fitzroy
Werribee

Try and keep the travel down a bit!!!

It will never happen but wouldn't we love it.

Doubt the cricket clubs would be happy with their grounds being torn up the night before they play. Also the hard surfaces would mean alot more injuries.

Having said that though, I would love to see this happen.

with newspapers going on about the projected 7 million population for Melbourne in the future ... there may be ample opportunity for the VAFA to have two leagues split geographically, each with as many teams as the one does now ... assuming I'm right in guessing the VAFA is currently drawing higher participation levels, rather than lower

I had a email discussion with a club president about the clubs in D1 - D4 be broken up into North, South, East And West groups.

With the groups winners playing each other in knockout finals. Then the winner of the games proceed to C Section. As usual.

Agree about the previous posts about being one sided contests however it may be easier for lower teams to recruit better when all games are closer to their base.

Just a thought.

Sloth out

The MPNFL divisional premiership winners don’t play one another. There are 3 division winners and that’s it. It’s a simple concept that appears to work well for them. We have a promotion/relegation system which they don't have, but that could quite easily be integrated into a south/north divisional structure. Wouldn't hold my breath for it to happen though.

Yeah I wasn't thinking of the div premiers going on to play each other, was more along the lines of distinctly separate leagues. But there wouldn't be the numbers to warrant it yet. Was just remarking based on the forecast population explosion :)
