Hard to see him coming back, was never the best player going around in fact I don't see how we need a defensive mid like him anymore. I would've parted ways to be honest.
Never started as a defensive mid was put into that role. Can reinvent him self as a half back or forward.

He's another big body on the ground and the season is a marathon not a sprint

When you hear the comments from Hine about the age profile of our list and need to target experience there was no chance Caff was going anywhere. At the very least quality depth which is important.

Happy to keep Caff on for another year but unless he can break into the side in the next 12 months I think it will be over for him after that.

Does the club still want him as a shutdown tagger or are they considering the possibility of playing him up forward again like they did in 2010 as a way to re-invent his role in the team?

Seems generous of the club.
Would have be tough to cut him after all he's been through but football clubs can't afford to be sympathetic.

Won't be pushing anyone out of the senior team while getting over his knee reco in the VFL.
That's pretty much every single footballer that's ever had a knee reco o_O

I think the 1 year contract says everything you need to know.

He's good enough that we didnt want to risk losing him, but also given his injury status, and the development of the players around him - the club isnt quite sure where he fits... Buys him, and the club, another 12 months to figure that out, and for him to show that he can still be a quality member of our list.

It may be strategic as well to free up some Danger or Treloar money :thumbsu:

30+ ranked player in my view. We were a poorer midfield when he was in the centre square. Now that we have Adams, Crisp, Greenwood all going through the square, and all with defensive and offensive games, we don't need a pure negator.

Takes 30+ to win a flag, I'm happy up to about 32 with all fit and firing, would love to see that creep up to high 30's as the kids mature, we'd be unbeatable

I'm very happy for us to keep Macaffer on the books for at least another year. If he doesn't make our best 22, he'll be a very capable backup player. He's a quality type who can play in a few positions.

I think us not having him available as a midfield tagger is somewhat comparable to the Crowley/Fremantle situation. It's (seemingly) helped them be more attacking and they have benefited from that, perhaps we too have found that having a player taking up a vital midfield spot in a mostly defensive role is not of benefit to the team.

Be interesting to see where he slots into the side, by the looks of things the club sees him as best 22.

Could we see him back up forward?

This is what I'm thinking. He'll play the lockdown defensive forward role that Goldsack wouldn't be able to play with te same versatility given Caff can actually play as a true forward. Then if needed, he can be thrown on the ball to lock someone down if need be, freeing up Crisp to just attack.

Caff can actually provide a surprising amount of flexibility to our side without actually adding any genuine quality. Not such a terrible thing.

My thoughts exactly.
Handy player to have in the side.
