The idea being if he's going to leave he goes at the end of this year so Melbourne don't lose him for nothing right?

I doubt it. I mean they can certainly demand more if he is under contract but Hogan can also demamd more money from Melbourne, Freo or any other suitors when he is out of contract. In anycase he isn't a free agent so a trade will need to happen in order to secure him. I doubt Hogan even knows what he wants to do in two years so I wouldn't be holding out on him.

Interesting on SEN. Patrick Smith reckons Hurley who is contracted wants to be a free agent and that Freo have an offer for him as well.

Patrick Smith usually researches his stories but I find this one hard to swallow bearing in mind our stated desire to try for players coming home mainly.

Smells like a manager is using the Freo tries for everyone line to boost his clients next contract and Smith fell for it.

Know for a fact Hurley is sounding out clubs, know of one that he 100% has had talks with. Whether they just be basic chats or detailed, no idea but he is definitely open to leaving for the right price it seems.

If his primary goal is to just leave Essendon then why would he come to Perth. Plenty of Vic teams that can offer both money and a chance at a premiership.

Definitely sounds like the classic use Freo to bump up the offer strategy.

For sure and you are actually making my point. These media types seem to not want to upset their mates at the Melbourne clubs so whilst many clubs may be looking at Hurley the story is always left at "Freo is making a desperate bid" for player X.

Logically we already have enough on our plate with McCarthy and Hooker and if we did show interest it would have been the most general of enquiries.

Hooker is worth a 4 year deal. If he is taking a year off he isn't sitting on the couch the whole day, he will be training by himself at a gym. Kurt Tippet was banned for 6 months and he was training with the swans. Hooker and Johnson down back with Alex Pearce or and young KPP up forward is fine by me.

You can say that again.

I don't know how much cash we can splash on new players in the next few years but Hooker would be worth 600k per year. Maybe more.

Can't see Freo affording both he and McCarthy but wouldn't be unrealistic uf they are front loading contracts this year to free up some space.

McCarthy surely wouldn't be on that much money. Can't see us paying him more than GWS did last year given the events of the last six months. He earns the contract we offered him last year back now. Depression or not I didn't see Mitch Clark get offered what he got prior to his condition and time out of the game. McCarthy should be no different.

Essendon moved Cale up foward for the second half of last year. While he had done cameo's up forward before this was his first real stretch as a forward.

In 10 games as a forward (Remembering how woeful Essendon were last year)

He kicked 20 goals.
Took 21 contested marks.
Took 26 marks inside 50.
Laid 23 tackles.
Averaged 17.2 disposals so was plenty involved.

If Johnson goes another year we could definitely use Hooker as a Pav replacement.

So he is better than Colin Sylvia then?

For those who are interested, there's a Four Corners story re: the Essendon Doping Saga on at 8.30pm tonight. Given we're chasing at least one one (and possibly more) Essendon free agents, it might be informative watching. I note the program is NOT being advertised on the AFL website.

http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/2016/03/21/4426753.htm

NB: Coincidentally enough, Dyson Heppell has also come out and said today he's critical / angry at the club for what they went through...

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-03-21/dyson-heppell

EDIT: Just watched the report - nothing terribly new in there, but Essendon seeking to have one of its ex-players pay the club's legal fees was a bit f*****g rich. Essendon changed their mind on this point after Four Corners got involved, but they're still not telling that poor bugger exactly what he was injected with, even after 18 months of asking. So much for Essendon looking after the players they illegally injected.

If Cale, Heppell et. al. don't leave Essendon after their suspension, then IMPO their conduct shows they complicity approve of this kind of behavior. How in God's name could you place blind trust in your club's officials after that?

Again... Its possible to get Hooker, and McCarthy under the cap if done correctly. Again.. the salary cap increases every year. If Pav retires this season, it will free up money.

Realistically the players that could possibly be retiring at seasons end are Pav, Sandilands and Johnson. I think it is a given that it is unfortunately Pav's last year but Sandilands and Johnson are only one injury away from retirement also.

It may also be in Freo's best interest to let Sandi and Johnson retire to free up cap space to grab both Hooker and McCarthy. it would be a much better option to sign them on for one more season on a low salary though

Johnson is contracted for next season so would not free up cash by him retiring.

Delist a couple of role players (de Boer, Clancee and Mzungu are out of contract) and replace with first year players who'll earn less and it should make up the difference between the value of Pav + Sandilands + excess cap and Hooker + McCarthy. I wouldn't even mind a cheap ruck to put pressure on Clarke and Griffin as well and so we can delist Hannath. Wouldnt cost much more than Hannath.

The new CBA will see the caps go up significantly - which is what will hold existing players coming out of contract in a holding pattern this season

Not really. The CBA percentage can be added on in a contract. I believe the players are waiting for the outcome of Free Agency negotiations from 8 years down to 6 years before deciding to sign long term.

It can be and often is, but putting a provision in is different to knowing what you are working with up front
