A few comments in here about Essendon getting pick 2-4 for Hooker if he leaves as a RFA. I'm not sure they'd get that compo. Hooker would have to be in the top 15 players in the whole comp (over 25) to get that. Could be possible with a huge FA carrot, but it's maybe more likely that Essendon would get an end of first round compo pick around 19-20. If the DFA card didn't exist, I don't think they'd be happy with that and would go with the matching/trade route. Would make things interesting to see what Essendon would do.

I think if we're paying Hooker enough that they get band 1 compo we're overpaying him. He's good, but he's not THAT good. And it's a position we've got some good young depth in. I'd rather not get him at all and save the $$ for a forward type
Its not just based on $$$ though, things like where they finish in B&F are heavily factored in as well.
CLUBS will only receive a first-round compensation pick after losing a free agent in 2015 if the player's new contract ranks them among the top five per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 and older.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-10-...-to-earn-firstround-free-agency-compensation-To put that figure in perspective, a wage that ranks in the top five per cent of players aged 25-plus would put the free agent among the game's top 15 earners.
Well he won't even get a vote in the 2016 b&f so that will help! Its not just based on $$$ though, things like where they finish in B&F are heavily factored in as well.
They changed the rules last year because of guys like Frawley getting ridiculously high compo picksHow the hell did Frawley get that than? His salary would not be near that high.
Hookers will be however so its moot, they'll get a first rounder.

If our young talls come on ,Pearce,Collins,Uber,Apeness why would we grab a 29 year old who has missed a year of football on a big contract.
You would think that waiting to see what transpires this season would be a reasonable idea.
Because Pearce aside what have they shown? I like how people leave Taberner out of this but maybe Pearce aside he's shown the most by far. In three years it's quite likely it'll be just Pearce, Collins, Apeness and Taberner. In three years Pav is 38, MJ 34, Dawson 32 and Silvagni 31. We could get lucky in the draft but that's a huge age gap there so one or two from other clubs is a decent idea IMO.If our young talls come on ,Pearce,Collins,Uber,Apeness why would we grab a 29 year old who has missed a year of football on a big contract.

* I'm not saying Uber, Hannath, Smith, Hurley etc are certainties to not make it but jeez I wouldn't be confident at this point in time.
There is a bewildering myth that we lack talls. Freo have a big contingent of young talls plus the veterans . I listed a few and you added some plus Clark is young in ruck man terms. All the young talls have this season to stake a claim.
Hooker is 33 in three years .Not a long term prospect you would think.
In 3 years he is 30, he's currently 27 and 3 months.

Why are people talking about compensation still?
There is no compensation for delisted free agents. Essendon will not be rewarded with half a dozen 1st rd draft picks should a bunch of their players decide to exorcise their DFA clause. How much he's paid and all that will be.
Based on what notion?Because he is more likely to leave as a RFA then he is a DFA...
