A few comments in here about Essendon getting pick 2-4 for Hooker if he leaves as a RFA. I'm not sure they'd get that compo. Hooker would have to be in the top 15 players in the whole comp (over 25) to get that. Could be possible with a huge FA carrot, but it's maybe more likely that Essendon would get an end of first round compo pick around 19-20. If the DFA card didn't exist, I don't think they'd be happy with that and would go with the matching/trade route. Would make things interesting to see what Essendon would do.

They'd get 2 (assuming they finish bottom).

Hookers salary will be pretty high, in the vicinity of 700-800k per year.
Remember Frawley got the Dees pick 3, Hooker will be getting paid more and has a better record in polling well in B&F's which will make him worth pick 2 or wherever it falls.

If he choose to walk they won't match.

I think if we're paying Hooker enough that they get band 1 compo we're overpaying him. He's good, but he's not THAT good. And it's a position we've got some good young depth in. I'd rather not get him at all and save the $$ for a forward type

Its not just based on $$$ though, things like where they finish in B&F are heavily factored in as well.

CLUBS will only receive a first-round compensation pick after losing a free agent in 2015 if the player's new contract ranks them among the top five per cent of AFL wage earners aged 25 and older.

To put that figure in perspective, a wage that ranks in the top five per cent of players aged 25-plus would put the free agent among the game's top 15 earners.

How the hell did Frawley get that than? His salary would not be near that high.

Hookers will be however so its moot, they'll get a first rounder.
They changed the rules last year because of guys like Frawley getting ridiculously high compo picks

Noted.

Still think he gets the $$$ to get them a first either way, we will pay for him unless we get some massive surprises from kids this year.

Frawley was the reason they changed it for the following year.

I believe the band 2 compo is a pick in the middle of the first round (I might be wrong). Still higher than what we could offer in a trade you would think.

EDIT: apparently it is an end of first round pick. I guess whether Essendon match might depend on whether we offer him enough money then. There is still the threat that he will choose to be a DFA.

If our young talls come on ,Pearce,Collins,Uber,Apeness why would we grab a 29 year old who has missed a year of football on a big contract.
You would think that waiting to see what transpires this season would be a reasonable idea.

I would think its obvious we will wait and see how the season pans out.

However to hang our hopes on Pearce (rate him, think he will be a star), Collins (a 3rd/4th round pick), Apeness (huge history of knee problems) and Uber (a rookie lister) would be pretty stupid when we can sign a guy who at the start of next year will be just 28 and have 4+ years of footy left on him as well as being a B&F winner and borderline AA selection.

No brainer, if we can get him especially for free in a list management sense we do it.

We have a few guys entering their twilights in the next few years too. Pav will be gone, Mundy, Sandi, Johnson and Dawson on the way out. Setting aside the loss of talent of our key position backs there - that's a big chunk of the salary cap.

Because Pearce aside what have they shown? I like how people leave Taberner out of this but maybe Pearce aside he's shown the most by far. In three years it's quite likely it'll be just Pearce, Collins, Apeness and Taberner. In three years Pav is 38, MJ 34, Dawson 32 and Silvagni 31. We could get lucky in the draft but that's a huge age gap there so one or two from other clubs is a decent idea IMO.

* I'm not saying Uber, Hannath, Smith, Hurley etc are certainties to not make it but jeez I wouldn't be confident at this point in time.

There is a bewildering myth that we lack talls. Freo have a big contingent of young talls plus the veterans . I listed a few and you added some plus Clark is young in ruck man terms. All the young talls have this season to stake a claim.
Hooker is 33 in three years .Not a long term prospect you would think.

In 3 years he is 30, he's currently 27 and 3 months.

I would take Cale Hooker in a heartbeat. He would be an absolute gem to add to our back line, even as a swing man forward at times. Before everyone says what about Pearce, I see him as a 10 year player also, but I also see him dashing out of defense becoming yet another run and carry player. Hooker and Dawson to hang back and cover the remaining "hulking" forwards as they slowly become extinct.

Why are people talking about compensation still?

There is no compensation for delisted free agents. Essendon will not be rewarded with half a dozen 1st rd draft picks should a bunch of their players decide to exorcise their DFA clause. How much he's paid and all that will be irrelevant.

Because he is more likely to leave as a RFA then he is a DFA...

Based on what notion?

Based on assumption that he's probably a decent bloke and won't want to bleed the Dons dry unless he is forced too.
Unless they plan to match it really makes no difference to him how he leaves.
