It's very much a horses for courses situation, RTB doesn't care about age, as evidenced time and time again by always having one of the oldest lists in the comp to contest for a premiership with, and brushing off criticism from the media about it. The only thing that matters is the personnel to play the role. Duffield played a role hotly contested by the likes of Shero, Ibbo, Spurr, and now the likes of Tucker. The roles of say Dawson, Johnson, Pav don't have the same level of competition so they'll get infinitely more say on whether they want to go around again each year.I just think that after 30 the cliff can come very rapidly, despite how players are looking. Duffield was looking good in 2014, averaged 19 disposals, 5 marks and 4 tackles a game and was a valuable asset to our defence. Come 2015 and about halfway through the season it became very apparent that that would be his last season. We shouldn't be relying on blokes playing until they are 33/34 - it should be considered a bonus if they do.

It sounds good (unrestricted free agent), but it doesn't really change much. The possibly off pick 2 as compensation would be pretty hard to resist, but I spose this eliminates the doubt. The club just needs to make him want to play for us.
This also confirms he was not in the top 25% of payments made to Essendon players so where the rumours of needing a million a year to change clubs came from nobody knows!
If he wants to leave Essendon the bidding war starts, unless he wants to come here and it's almost a one team race as I doubt West Coast will be in the frame. Certainly not worth throwing that money at him straight away. Talk to his manager later in the year and see what they want. He may say he'll re-sign with Essendon or he wants to stay in Melbourne or he's open to all offers or its between us and Essendon etc etc. If he's looking for a way home then we can probably bargain the wages down to around market value, if not we've just got to know our limits.Well, he still needs to "want" to come here. We are all making assumptions that he is unhappy with Essendon and want to move west. 1mil a year would be rather good incentive.

Not all Hookers are money hungry. He will be at Freo because of love.

It doesn't matter too much if restricted or unrestricted. The DFA threat means that Essendon wouldn't match anyway.
If you refuse to sign a contract offered you're not a DFA. You have to go into the draft.
It doesn't really matter whether he is a RFA or UFA anyway. Pretty sure there is no precedence of any team matching a rival bid. If the player wants to leave they let them.
Dangerfield. Geelong had to trade for him to get him. The only other RFA I can remember is Buddy, and it was such an insane contract that obviously Hawthorn couldn't match it. I would hope we don't put something like that on the table for Hooker.
The RFA paperwork wasn't lodged for Dangerfield.
