Based on assumption that he's probably a decent bloke and won't want to bleed the Dons dry unless he is forced too.
Unless they plan to match it really makes no difference to him how he leaves.
If the players take the club to court and the club start being arse-faces about it, then there will be acrimony building between the two parties and the players will bail. The Dons will need to play this smartly or they will alienate the suspended players further. The good thing for us is that alienation is highly likely to happen given the woeful decision making of the EFC so far.

There is a bewildering myth that we lack talls. Freo have a big contingent of young talls plus the veterans . I listed a few and you added some plus Clark is young in ruck man terms. All the young talls have this season to stake a claim.
Hooker is 33 in three years .Not a long term prospect you would think.

It is easy to understand why people have that line of thinking. We have a bunch of old players nearing retirement, nothing in the important mid-age bracket, and a list of young talls that is nothing to get excited about. Most of the kids are long shots. Listing a bunch of names does not make up for the lack of quality. It would take some extraordinary development of our young talls this year to make our future KPP situation look good. Pearce is the only one who looks capable of reaching a good level, and even that is still potential that is a far way from being realised. We could really use some additions from outside our current stock (McCarthy + Hooker).

No one is worth a million bucks a year after a year out of the game... The article says offers between 700 and 800k are likely. I still think that's overs and it would surely make any future pick ups (ie possibly Hogan) much more difficult.

I would be happy if the club front loaded a $750,000 per year contract so that he was getting over a mil in his first year. 4 year deal for a 28 year old, so he's 31 when it ends. I suspect that's the type of contract it would take to get him, given there will be other clubs sniffing around.

Talls always go for more as they are a rarer commodity so more than happy to pay 800,000 for Hooker.
In terms of compensation I think Essendon deserve an early pick for him especially when you consider he is an AA + B&F winner.
Some people also need to remove the chip on their shoulder when it comes to Essendon, they have been punished and will not be contending for a long time.

The main question is though do we need Hooker, and in my opinion absoloutely.

I love the romance of developing our own and we have had great success developing through the draft.
The fact is as we now hover in the upper echelons of the ladder, our access to early picks has greatly diminished.
One only has to look at last years draft to see the quality and quantity of talls get picked up early.
This has left us trying to grab bargain talls late in the draft or in the rookie draft.
While we do have an excellent development program, lets be realistic the chances of Collins, Uebergang, Hannath or any other late picks/rookies
becoming All Australian B&F winners are very slim.

In Hooker you are getting an established A grade KPP who has at least 5-6 seasons in him.

I'd say maybe 3-4

If we have offered him a 5 year deal, why would they (presumably his manager) reveal it to foxfooty this early in the season? Is his manager trying to get Essendon to come to the table?

Hmmm that's a lot........ Not sure if worth it. Hopefully the cap skyrockets as you predict.
I hope so too.

It would be nice for his salary impact to be slowly trending down, ie:
2017 - 8% of cap
2018 - 5% of cap
2019 - 3% of cap
etc
