She told me he only pulled his name off in November. Maybe those BF rumours of him coming last trade period were closer than we thought.
Wait, what? Were you being serious?

Back to Hooker, if we offered him a five year contract, I assume it means we're paying him a lower salary each year. So maybe 600–650K a year for five years, rather than the 800K a year that was mooted.

Would make sense to front load it, McCarthy's too. Sandi and Johnno are veterans, so we only pay half there payments......I think?

We get a $115,000 on the veteran payments off the salary cap.

It might be more like $120,000 now, each.

This is what I don't really understand. 800K is worth 700K to $725K by the 4th year. When you factor in the very strong growth in the salary cap, there's room to structure an offer. 800k in the first two years and 650k in the next three is approx 700K a year, an entirely acceptable salary for an above average footballer by 2020.

We should do what we need to do to secure an established KPP.

This year it's $127,435, which is 1.229% of the cap. Pav, Sandi, MJ, Mundy and Ibbo have veteran status this year.

Same source says the veteran allowance will cease at the end of the 2016 season.
FWIW it's this year's AFL Record (which looks much better this year with Fyfe in the cover)

Personally I liked the rule. Makes it easier for clubs to keep their players. Anything that helps with this should be encouraged (IMO) in a new era where free agency makes it so much easier to move clubs.

800k is still 800k. It doesn't suddenly become less because the year is different, but you're right that there is more salary cap to play with each year, so allowances could be made to factor that into a contract, such as if we say to him, we'll pay you 7% of the salary cap each year, which I doubt is something we'd do anyway. In any case, yes, we need him and we would be fools to not want him.

Even a Hooker, McCarthy, Bennell trio is a pretty handy list of ins across 3 very important lines...

True, but there's some risk involved with all 3. Hooker and McCarthy won't have played for a year and Bennell.....well we know the risks there.

A million a year for Cale Hooker......I know there's going to be a free agent premium and i'm cool with that.....but jeez.....a million a year for Cale Hooker?????

Fyfe, McCarthy, Bennel, Hooker, Clarke, Weller, Walters, Neale, Langdon, Blakely, Tabener (yes him too!), Apeness, Suttcliffe, Sheridan.

We're building a very competitive YOUNG list here.:)

Really? All I hear is the doom and gloom about how with McPharlin gone, Pav in his last year and Sandi getting older we are going to fall off a cliff.

Because Lyon doesn't develop Youth. And will be backdooring it for the Suns list

Love the optimism and get where you're going, but...

We don't have McCarthy or Hooker yet! ;)

Quick Question... Do we really need him?
We need a fwd not another back... Although how old is ZAAAAAACCCCCC DAWWWWWWWWWSSSSSONNN (insert Ross Lyon
impersonation)

I see Dawson and Silvagni as being more than capable defenders who will give everything they have for the team... But they're not elite A-grade KPD's.
Zac is perfect as a 2nd tall and SNOS as a 3rd or depth.

Hooker is A-grade. Need.

I wouldn't be surprised if Dawson and Johnson retired at the end of next year. We need another ready made backman and Hooker is clearly the best available.

Johnson yes but I reckon Dawson at least 1 more. He played about 3 games last year so his body should be pretty fresh for a while.

I would be surprised if Johnson goes beyond this year (but would move into a coaching role). His back, hamstring, and related issues have obviously been hampering him the past 2 years and I would be surprised if he plays all 25 games this year (similar to Elvis last year). Dawson will play until he's 40 (or pushed out by the Hooker/Pearce duo)

Zac will be 31 next year....
Johnson's had injury in this pre-season but why would Dawss who is in good nick and playing well retire as you suggested. Don't read anything into RTB taking Johnno and Dawss off at 3/4 tine on Sunday as he was just managing workload. Of course he wanted to get Grey and Hughes into the action and get sone

I just think that after 30 the cliff can come very rapidly, despite how players are looking. Duffield was looking good in 2014, averaged 19 disposals, 5 marks and 4 tackles a game and was a valuable asset to our defence. Come 2015 and about halfway through the season it became very apparent that that would be his last season. We shouldn't be relying on blokes playing until they are 33/34 - it should be considered a bonus if they do.
