I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL has made Hooker and the others unrestricted free agents to stop them from taking this option. The AFL love giving Essendon a free ride, so it's in their best interests to let Essendon get compensation for losing players
With you 100%. The AFL has consistently moved to downplay, disregard and generally disparage the Essendon drug saga. Why would they stop now.

In saying that this was a demand from the AFLPA so they might bend if there is a hint not letting them take this option would be a "welfare" issue.

I think another positive is the year off and training with Buttifant will also prime him for a longer career , he will get rid of or at least heavily rest any niggles he might have been carrying. Wouldn't be surprised by a big 5 year deal in the works.

Dons will Struggle to Keep Hooker.

My take on this.

Hooker wants to stay at Essendon and want them to match Freo's offer, they refused (they want the compo). Freo have put a time limit on this offer for him to accept or they'll move on to another target. His manager is leaking the details to the media to put pressure on Essendon. Freo don't do contract negotiations thru the media.

Essendon trying to push him out is my take.

It's academic anyway. Cale is unrestricted...

"Cale, would you like to join Fremantle?"

"Why yes, now you mention it...I certainly would...600k? Don't mind if I do...Can I borrow your pen, Bondy?"
Actually the number I heard quoted is 800k
Still take it.

Interesting on SEN. Patrick Smith reckons Hurley who is contracted wants to be a free agent and that Freo have an offer for him as well.

Christ, how much money do we have stashed away! I remember RTB saying a year or so ago - perhaps around the Cloke time - that we were associated with every KPP who reared his head!

Hurley, Hooker, Hogan combo.

I like it.

Triple H, so to speak...

At the end of this year I think Pavlich, Hannath, C Pearce and if those guys came, Silvagni would be gone. The problem is McCarthy as well.
I would say if we get McCarthy he'd come pretty cheap. He'd be pretty untouchable to most clubs at this stage

Sounds like Hurley will be playing for Hawthorn next year then.

That's still good news in a way though, because it means they're less likely to pounce on Hooker.

Is Hogan's contract up at the end of this season or next?

Sorry I haven't really been following it much, I don't wanna get myself too hyped up only to be let down if he stays at Melbourne.
