Hooker
A.Pearce
Z.Clarke (he stays as #1 ruck) I reckon he'd do alright with a good support of A.Pearce/Apeness if he get's his head right.
MccArthy
Tabs/Apeness (Hogan?)

That's a premiership contending spine if I've ever seen one (minus the full forward position). If we manage to get Hogan then that's 100% premiership material. Add Fyfe, Neale, Bennell, Weller, Langdon, Morabito, Hill, Blakely, Tucker, Ibbo, Sheridan, Sutcliffe and Crozier plus others then it's not a bad position to be in. At All.

We need Hooker and Mcarthy, they won't be messiahs but they'd certainly help.

So I had a crack at out 2018 team based on this year plus obtaining Hooker and MccArthy. Noticable retirees include Pav, Sandi, Johnson, Griffin, Spurr. I didn't include Hogan but geez, that'd be awesome.

FB: Grey Hooker Collins
HB: Sheridan A.Pearce Morabito
MF: Hill Fyfe Langdon
HF: Bennell McArthy Weller
FF: Ballas Apeness/Tabs Walters
R: Z.Clarke Neale Mundy
Tucker, Sutcliffe, Ibbo, Blakely

Emerg: Yarran, Balic, Mayne

That's a good young team with not too many old blokes. That could realistically be our 2018 team. That's a premiership team if we actually clicked as a team and played to our strengths ala bulldogs this year.

Highly doubt Ballas will be playing for us in 2018 and if Yarran still hasn't cracked the team by then something has definitely gone wrong.

I'll play the bad guy here...

Hooker plays for Essendon and McCarthy is signed with GWS.

Grey should never play AFL with his foot skills. Collins, Mora, Blakely, Langdon, Weller, Tucker, Apeness and Tabs haven't proven they're capable AFL players yet. Zarche, Sutcliffe and Sheridan haven't proven they're capable of being anything more than c graders. Mundy will be 33, Ballantyne will be 30. Not sure how you get premiership contender out of that especially if you're comparing lists with GWS, Gold Coast, St Kilda and pretty much every other team.

Lyon has spent the last three years trying for the premiership which I'm glad he did. But unfortunately we haven't turned over our list in that time and we are left with lots of older players and average youth (from finishing high). Fyfe, Neale, Walters, Bennell and Hill is a solid core but adding Hooker and McCarthy isn't going to make us contend. If peoplnow e are complaining about our bottom 6 we are going to have a bottom 16 in 2018. I'm less optimistic and feel we need to fully bottom out and get some talent in that can kick the ball if we want to contend again. Hopefully the next generation will ready in 3-5 years to complement Fyfe, Son Son and the rest in their late 20's and we can seriously contend for a few years.

Even though we didn't win a flag I have really enjoyed the last three years. Some real great highs and memorable moments but not too many teams stay around the top for too long. I'm ready for our stint not contending.

If our better players are yet to hit the 28-31 age bracket then our team has room to improve as generally the successful teams have their primary contributors in the 28-31+ bracket.

The aim is to surround the likes of Fyfe, Neale, Walters, Weller, Bennell, Moose, Hill, (McCarthy/Tucker/etc) with quality but this patch is where we are trying to fill the void of quality from the pre-2008 era, our oldest players are from that dry period - the real boom time for us is when these currently young players are the old senior players, surrounded by quality youth.

Let's be honest in 2020 it's more like:

Fyfe (29), Hill (30), Walters (29), Neale (27), A.Pearce (25), Bennell (28)

Everyone else is no certainty, even Bennell isn't really but there's at least 6-8 players at the club that'll more than likely be at least B graders by then, some that already are and may or not be still playing, a few smokies and/or injured players that may come good and also a bunch of opposition players we could get in that period.

There's not doubt we are probably in for a reasonable process. Won't be as simple as get 2-3 KPPs and we get the flag. Players like Weller, Langdon and Blakely can't be expected to perform after playing 20 games.

Hey guys, just ran into our illustrious leader rtb. He was getting his hair cut, and I have to say, he is completely different to what you see in the media. Very friendly, and very honest. He answered several of my questions. Here is what he told me.
-Ethan Hughes was going to play against West Coast before he tweaked his hammy. Ross thinks he's going to be a very good player.
-Cale Hooker wants to stay in Melbourne, from what he is lead to believe.
-Mundy is a couple of weeks away still
-Our lack of height is really hurting us
-Harley is a very special player
-Our lack of high draft picks has hurt our talent pool
-Ross is very disappointed at our skill level.
-Sandi is 8 weeks away, and had injuries similar to a car crash
Sorry, I know the last few points aren't ground breaking, but thought it was worth passing on.

especially pleased to hear this. I've been on the Hughes bandwagon for a while now. Just has that special something the way he moves and handles the ball.

Considering he's only been playing footy for a small amount of time compared to most other players in the league, his potential upside is very, very high. Guess you could say he has a Hughes upside.... alright I'll see myself out.

Heard this was at the expense of Ibbotson, also heard Barlow was told the Wednesday last week he was out, begged for his spot on Thursday and was given his chance, I think he did enough to stay this week.

Damien Barratt to have news on 2 of Essendons stars on the footy show (could be cale hooker). If any over easters could post the early scoop?

Nice one :thumbsu:

2 players were Heppell (who's suing Essendon for lost earnings) & Hurley who apparently might seek to void his contract to seek and sign a bigger one (1 mill a season) to stay with Essendon...

No talk on Hooker

Agree, although i also think we were thin in the young quality mids department, and weller, blakeley and langdon and tucker have filled that void.
We were this year. I'd like us to go for the KPP players henceforth, even if they're not the best of the draft. We obviously need to do a better job of developing our own.

This ties in with what they said on 'Talking Footy' a few weeks ago, they said Hooker loves living in Melbourne. I think we may struggle to get him, especially with the Hawks showing interest.

Freo getting used again in negotiations even by West Aussie not just Victorians players.

Selection of Hooker at full back????? You dont pay fulll backs $600K Plus per annum as that is what we would have to pay for him.
