No doubt this will be painted as a failure by Freo but in reality he could have gone anywhere - Suns, pies ..you name it.

The reality is that the only way to guarantee young talls is to draft and develop them ourselves. If we can score the odd one through trade, free agency then its a bonus.

The sooner this rather obvious penny drops with out list management people the better.

I quite happy with him signing now with essendon , there is no more excuse for us not getting tall and look around the league knowing the only realistic player to get is cam mc . as for Hogan with the way his current team playing we got not much hope .

28 yr old on a 5 year contract has disaster written all over it.
So he'll be 33 years old at the end of the contract.

Johnson will be 33 years at the end of the contract we gave him, and Johnson hasn't exactly been durable. What does that make our contract?

It'll be a firesale at Essendon - they will have legal issues for years to come. Tbh they actually may be keen to 'inject' youth in next year as realistically they will be on the slow re-build - no team could recover quick from something like this. Draft picks could be that option

Assuming he's what 26-27 by the end of the year. Very real chance all parties will entertain it

rofl

so much firesale

maybe learn what the deal was before you attempt a witty rebuttal

How is Johnson signing on until he is 33 at freo any different to signing a 28 year old to the same age at Essendon..............

Johnson has not exactly been paying dividends for you blokes.

That is the exact point...

Johnson was signed to that age much closer to the age and look how that has turned out.

I get that..........

I am just spelling it out for this bloke above me who said I didn't know the deal

He was suggesting that you shouldn't compare a 5 year deal to a shorter deal.

So you question was "how is it any different to Freo contracting Johnson to that age?", the answer is that the contract is much shorter, the physical state of the player post 30 is not a guess.

On the order of risk it goes:
Johnson >>> Hooker >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Franklin

33 is the new 30. Probably smart by him. We are on a forced rebuild and at 28 next year, he isn't any closer to a premiership with us than he will be at Essendon. He went to my high school so I wish him all the best and hope the PEDs don't have any lasting negative effects on his body.

Have to kind of agree in this regard.

Can't knock Essendon for offering him a 5 year deal cause apparently that's what we tabled to Hooker to try to get him over
