Cale seemed to play a lot of the game between the two 50m arcs & this was shown in his stats having 4 rebounds out of 50 & 5 inside 50’s leading to one score assist. His game was nothing spectacular but he looked sharp early but his influence on the game lessened as it wore on. I think he will do well for the run & continue improving as he gets more match fitness & used to the pace of the game.

Pros:

- I think he played a little further up field.
- 5 inside 50’s is a good sign that he is either getting the ball in an attacking position or able to run with it until he can deliver it into the forward 50.
- To me he looked a little quicker than 2009, it might have just looked that way but I did notice that in 09 he could run all day but lacked in top speed so I just hope I wasn’t imagining things & he has gotten a little quicker over the preseason.
- Great game for his first one of the year.

Cons:

- Efficancy was at 58% with 4 clangers so although he had 19 possessions he wasted a lot of them with poor disposal.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, no questions.

Cale 'The Great' is starting to really hit his straps.

Im really impressed with this kid, will be an absolute star.

This is the review of the MFC sit for Cales game.

Cale Morton: I rated Cale as good. He had four consistent quarters from the perspective of being involved in the game, and winning the ball, and using it well. I still would have liked to have seen a little bit more intensity as far as pressure on the opposition, and that’s probably why he’s a bit down at the minute. He’s just got to add that to his game a lot more. He did a few things - there’s no doubt he was trying to do some things - but he’s got to make that a bit more of a focus in his game. But he was still pretty good, and had 24 possessions. But, they did put him under a lot of pressure. He had a lot of handballs that were under pressure, when he was getting tackled really hard, and not being able to dispose of the ball as effectively as we know he can

Not sure if he will get a call back this week & by the sounds of his game he is not in great form at the moment. 24 possession is good but getting the ball has never been a problem for him.

The thing that interested me was that it was said he had a lot of handballs under pressure & that it was the result of oppositions pressure. We have always seen that Cale can tend to create his own pressure or handball to a player under pressure so I think that if he needs another week or two to work on this in the two's then so be it.

The other three just looked more like they were playing as hard as they could have. Cale was lazy, being dropped could be the spark he needs.

Coach review:

Cale Morton: Cale was very good. I put him on Brad Fisher. He kept him to one goal and then Fisher went off late in third quarter. We moved Cale on the ball and he had about six or seven touches. He had a big impact and he was a good contributor. We got exactly what we wanted.

Disappointing year for a player who promises so much. He needs to put on a lot more weight and stop looking so laconic. He can take a good grab so I think they should try him at CHF. 3\10

General Musings
2011 is going to have to be a big year for Cale, his fourth season at the Dees (no. 4 selection in National Draft in 2007). The prevailing view is that he is highly talented but has not quite reached the standards he could be at. Some attribute this to his admittedly scrawny frame, but I am reluctant to believe that he will put on as much weight as some want him to. There is more to strength than muscle mass. For those worrying about his light frame, I suggest you check out some videos of Robbie Flower, a player with which I see similarities in style and skill with Cale.

Strengths
Cale can often find the ball well, and has a tendency to rack up possessions. A lot of these are uncontested, but he often proves to be a vital link up player from our defence to our forward line. In 2009 especially his run and work-rate was a feature. He needs to keep this up in 2011.

Weaknesses
I tend to see Cale’s decision making as a weakness. Often he will hesitate with the ball, unsure of which option to deliver to. I would also like to see some more accountability from him, lay some more tackles and generally apply good pressure to opposition wingmen. I have no doubt this is something that Bails’ will be working on closely (with all players) over the preseason.

Where does he play?
Cale was played toward the back half of the field this year, and quite a few times you would see him used as a releasing runner of half back, delivering further up field to the likes of Petterd, Green and Jurrah. He played an interesting role in the Sydney match this year, going with Adam Goodes for most of the match. Goodes was Sydney’s best player on the day (26 disposals, kicked 4.2) but you could tell the experience will be invaluable for Cale, who could, as he matures, be used in a more Goodes-like roaming midfielder/winger role.

No doubt having a full pre-season this year will be of immense benefit to Cale, and we all hope he hits the ground running by Round 1.

Hey Fellas,

Hope you don't mind me posting this here - I am Toby from Footy Tragic (A Dream Team website), and we currently have our pilot up on our website: http://www.footytragic.com/show.php

It includes talk about the pre-season, as well as an interview with Cale Morton who was a great sport! Definitely worth checking out for his segment where he tells us why he is in for a huge 2011.

Daily articles on the site begin this coming Monday! Look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts!

Can anybody tell me what position Cale played in the intra-club game? It was suggested earlier in the pre-season that he would replace Bruce across half-back...

Jarod,
I was at the intra-club, although it was a little while ago now I have memories of Cale playing in the backline, as a sort of half-back flanker/wingman.
IMO, it's his best position and one we should keep him in.

EDIT
Also, Cale's injury came at the worst possible time for a guy trying to cement his spot in a young and upcoming team. As has been said on here, hopefully his level of fitness should be maintained, but fitness was never his problem anyway.
What Cale needs is game time. Really feel for the kid, hope he can still make 2011 a good one.

Pros:

Tough week for Cale. Coming on as a sub at the end of the third quarter when you lack match experience is probably not the greatest way to come back to league footy, sure he’d be fresh but it’s hard to have an impact on the game. Managed to find a little bit of the ball, the biggest pro this week was that he actually got out on the park, but there wasn’t a whole lot more to his game than that.

Cons:

When he did find the ball he didn’t use it very well, I think there was one direct turnover that I can remember and several other questionable disposal decisions. He looks a little bit more athletic this year but I don’t think he’s ever going to put on the bulk that some people are craving. He’s just not that type of player. Would like to see him put his body on the line a bit more though, it could really help him cement his spot.

Does he keep his spot?

Give him a full game against GC, after that we can assess his performance. With the likes of Scully and McKenzie waiting in the wings (pun inten...forget it) he will have to show that he actually deserves a spot in the 21+1. Don’t write him off yet though. Players of his body type take a while to come good.

Bit of a limited write up from me I'm afraid, didn't see much of the game. If someone else wants to go into a bit more detail feel free.

Pros
From all reports Cale was solid without being outstanding. Still finding his place on the team. 3 goals good for his confidence.

Cons
The bye comes at a bad time for Cale, he needs all the footy he can get. Match fitness and intensity might still be an issue coming off injury.

What the club says
Ball Movement coach Mark Williams:
"Cale was good on the wing. He was good away from the stoppages and in general play. His positioning was good and he continued to step-up in his second game back for the season. He also kicked three goals."

Does he keep his spot
I still think Cale needs at least a few more games to get back into the swing of things. There will be competition for spots in a few weeks when McKenzie and Scully come up so he needs to keep improving.

I honestly CBF trying to find the stats for Cales game, I think we all saw how he played.
On Thurs night I was ready to lynch him, but I think now that i've cooled off I think it would probably be better to drop him. I've been a huge fan of Cale for a while now but it hasn't clicked for him in the seniors. Every week i've said 'give him a chance, give him a chance' but I'm afraid he's now used up his chances. Needs a spell at Casey.

I haven't jumped off his bandwagon completely. Very few people looked good against WC. So Cale needs to go back to Casey, work hard, lay some hard tackles and put his head over the ball, get his disposal confidence back, and then do the same in the seniors.

Cale Morton 2011 Review:
Todd Viney said:
Cale struggled to get going. He was very inconsistent and he was disappointed with his year. It was one of those years, which he’d like to forget, but I reckon it’ll be a driving force for him going into 2012. He’s one player who needs to get fitter and stronger in the pre-season to be able to compete. So he has a fair bit of work to undertake.

Interesting it's mentioned that Morton acknowledges it was a shitehouse year from him. Hope he can pull his finger out over preseason.

Expectations for 2011:

Cale needed to have a big 2011 to redeem the faith of diehard MFC supporters & thats exactly what was expected from him. His first season showed a lot of promise & most expected that once he put on some weight he would become one of our best players. Injury curtailed his second season but once he returned he again showed some promise but his 2010 season disappointed many supporters & many lost faith that he would ever become an elite player for the club.

For the above reasons all in sundry who follow trhe Dees want him to show some desperation, hardness & willingness to throw himself into the contest. Most felt he has the ability but at times lacked the desire, which has seen him scapegoat & the first criticised when the team performs poorly.

As a number four pick he need to show this season exactly why he was taken there & rated so highly.

Overall Performance in 2011:

Exactly what Melbourne supporters wanted to see - desperation, hardness & a will to compete, Cale failed to show. It was not that his year was exceptionally poor it was more that he didn't show enough of the qualities that we wanted.

The coaching staff were heavily criticised for not dropping him at time during the season & as a result any lack of form was magnified due to keeping his spot in the team.

Cale played 14 games this year & averaged 16 disposals per game so from a pure statistical point of view his output seemed ok. however at seasons end the stand in coach Todd Viney stated that "This is one of those years that he'd like to forget." I would imagine the supporters feel the same way but, alas, 2011 will not be a forgotten year for supporters.

Standout game: Rd 4 against the Suns was a good game for Cale. Although the MFC ended up winning by 90 odd points for the most part the game blew out in the last quarter, Cale's move forward & 3 goals was a good move for him & paid off.

Cale's season ended meekly but at least he started to tackle near the end of the season, the cause was Viney I'm sure.

What of 2012?:

Cale is guaranteed another two seasons with the club after re-signing at seasons end but the real test for Cale will be how he responds to his 2011 form & the appointment of a coach who demands his players be 'competitors' not just 'players.'

What does this mean for Cale? Well the heat has been on Cale from a supporters standpoint for the last two years & I don't expect the to dissapate any time soon. Now he has the eyes of a new coaching panel upon him so he will need to make some big changes & for the most part these are mental. He can only make do with the physical attributes he was given but a concerted effort to build on his slight frame may give him the confidence to become the player most think he can if he truly dedicates himself.

The other option is that the no nonsense Neeld will allow him to play out his career with Casey & be delisted at contact end or traded for nothing at the end of 2012.

Cale, the ball is in your court.

I have been quite enjoying Cale's work in the midfield and centre square bounces. Not quite shaken the outsider 'sift' tag, but he is going the right way about it. Looks to be thriving under Neeld, and if his performances keep up, he may yet become a good footballer for the club.

MFC Website: Morton determined to reignite career

IT’S BEEN tough at times. It’s never good to have your own supporters getting into you. But they pay their money to the games and they’re able to voice their own opinions - that’s fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But for me personally, it’s a challenge just to get out there each week and play my best footy and hopefully prove the doubters wrong. Although that’s at the forefront of my mind, I want to do my best for the team and help the team get a win every week.

Thanks RandB, it's a great read and recommend to all :thumbsu:

But what the hell is going on here

“In the past, I’ve been so confused about the position I’ve played. There have been weeks gone by where I haven’t had a game review following a match, because I’ve been unsure about which coach to see, because I was drifting between positions,”

Bailey.....
