Still would've rather melbourne drafted Dangerfield over this spud
I really think people that complain about Melbourne's early drafting are missing the mark entirely. Early draft picks are pretty set in stone and none of Melbourne's recently have been surprising in any way. Any other club would've come away with very similar players.
This is how Matt Burgan described Morton in his phantom draft:
"Melbourne won't believe its luck that a player some recruiting managers regard as the best in the draft will slip through to No.4."
Clearly he wasn't a terrible pick because he was incredibly highly rated. Same with Watts who basically everybody had as #1 (for example Quayle had Natanui at 3 behind Yarran). Ditto Scully and Trengrove who were always rated higher than Martin.
Someone like Gysberts who wasn't rated that highly sure but Morton's pick was completely standard.
Some highly rated juniors don't become quality players no matter what but I think the question marks have to be mainly over development and leadership. You can question whether lower selections were as good as they could've been but it's wrong to turn around and say you made the wrong decision at the trade table with top picks when basically every other club would've made the same decision.
As for Morton he's showing some improvement. There's no reason with his elite running capacity and height he can't turn into an Embley like player who can give pace and skill on the outside with the ability to push forward and kick the odd goal. No reason he can't be a very solid contributor in a good team in future.
