Long way to go for this kid still - but he has been one to cop a lot of Demon Supporters flak in recent times.

I for one was one who thought Cale would trail off in to oblivion like his older brothers, but I think so far this year Cale has shown glimpses of what he could be.

We need some versatility and skill in the side - we are full of big bodied one paced mids at the moment.

In saying that he still has a long way to go - I just wanted to praise his last few weeks of having a crack - skills and maturity will come if he keeps up the good efforts!!

Good post. he's the first to get caned on this forum when we lose. Thought he was very good in conditions that didn't suit him on Saturday night. Put his body on the line several times as well. He won't be able to avoid that in Neelds team. Hopefully the first steps in cementing a spot in our best 22. God knows we need him to step up.

I think there is a thread in 'The Lockeroom' on all the players, but what the hell, there's a Bartram thread on here now. I liked what I saw of Morton last night. Couple of times I thought he was just floating around a contest when he should've been in there helping out Jonesy or Magner, or whoever was in there, but he did some good things, made some strong tackles, provided some decent run. Keep this up and he'll definitely be in the best 22 by seasons end.

Agreed maybe a little pre-mature for the toast call.... But i thought his efforts of the last few rounds have been praise worthy considering the flak he cops.

Don't get me wrong I don't think he has asserted himself in the side - I am just liking that he is having a crack.
 
So the conditions didn't suit Watts, now Morton. Any others the conditions didn't suit? Maybe we should have chosen a "wet weather" squad? Fair suck of the sauce bottle.

I don't think it's wrong to say conditions don't suit a player. We all know wet conditions don't suit tall players. We also know Cale hasn't got the body of a James Magner. I'm not making excuses for the guy, I'm one of the first to bash the kid when he plays badly. I just don't think the conditions on Saturday night suited him, and I felt he played a decent game and put his body on the line several times. We need to see more of that from Cale in all conditions.

Agreed. Dory had good points as well. Let's see how he goes at the cattery. When was the last time he played 4 in a row?

Fair call. Saints play under cover at etihad. They still won because they pulled it out when it rained. Weather is no excuse for poor form.
 
I think Cale rightly got some plaudits in the voting even by some posters (myself included) who haven't been overly enamoured with him to date.

I didn't think he was anything special with the footy but he continually had a crack and got in the right spots and that stuck out for me - he was in the game. If a player shows they want to be out there like Cale did and battle as best they can for 4 quarters then that's a good start. If he backs it up then he is starting to make a statement but criticisms of his decision making and football ability will always be on the table as with any player.
 
The main difference i've noticed is that, besides being more contested, he is kicking the ball long. When he gets onto it he is 50m+ kick of the ball, which is pretty handy with Neelds new game plan. Much better than him going for the 20m pass and missing (how many times have we seen that over the last few years).
 
I hope we're looking at an Embley type winger with Cale; he's a good contested mark, can run and carry and has a loong shoe on him.

He's slowly building his confidence.

Two big tackles on McEvoy showed he has made some significant strength improvements.

Without being overly negative, I'm not sure "having a crack", as mentioned by almost all the above posters, is worthy of a toast. I would have thought actually turning up to play football should be the bare minimum that we expect from every one of our players, every week.

I think because the general standard of endeavour shown the majority of our players over the past few years has been so low (not all games), we have become so conditioned that when someone actually puts in an effort we are all so relieved that we "toast" them.

Cale had an ok game I thought, without really having a major impact. The reason he got votes from people around here is because he has been a whipping boy for so long I think. We were all so surprised to see him laying tackles (I know I actually let out a "was that Morton??"...REWIND..."it was! Geez we must be up for it tonight" when I saw Cale involved) that I think a few have got carried away with his performance.

I hope he continues this path of laying tackles but not ripping the lid off just yet

Exactly my point W=L

He is a good kick and can hit a target over distance or at least put it to advantage. To elborate a little - Moloney is a booming kick of the ball but his kicks are more bombs, where as Cale can hit a target with precise kicking over the same distance and has shown that skill on a couple of occasions.

His in close disposals, composure and decision making all still need a lot of work, there is a long way to go for all of our young players including Cale. I just wanted to find some positivity in our 0-5 start to the season.

And that's a very fair statement. But when the side is crying out for an outside type like Cale, and his history of not 'having a crack' isn't great, then it was a good to finally see him show a bit on the weekend.

I don't think anyone here has labeled his performance BOG. I feel most supporters could walk away from that game thinking Cale had at least put in. So many times I've walked away from a Dees game frustrated with how little effort Cale seemed to put in. I thought it was a good call by the OP to give the kid a bit of a boost instead of a boot. God knows we need all the confidence we can get right now. Cale has a long way to go, but it was a step in the right direction Saturday night. Lets hope he can continue on that path, because he definitely has the talent to deliver on the wing for the mighty Dees...

That is a really good point. We can't say the players weren't trying (except maybe at the cattery last year) but our standards have been so low that when players have actually had a real crack we appluad it. I guess my refrence is Bruise free footy - I am actualy finally happy the boys are playing a style of footy i like to watch - ala Hawks, Cats, Blues and Pies.

There is no doubt the team has a long way to go - I hope sat night was the minium standard because even though we lost I really enjoyed the game and the hard aggressive footy.

Back to Cale - the reason I toasted him is because I think he's turned himself around. I honestly thought after last year he might trail off in to oblivion. Cale and as a team we have a long way to go - I just wanted to give the boy some praise and find some positivitey from a poor year so far

Don't worry I will the first to knock him if he lets his standards drop :D

Rohan Bail shown improvement and went a bit harder too, i think this kid would fit perfect aswell as Morton with the boundary line style as both are quality runners and long kicks. I'd say Bail has more effective kicking and looks more dangerous around the 50m arc though.

Neeld playing him in the midfield helps balance it up... we finally have someone on the outside of the contests to give it to... couldnt do that with Bailey playing him of the hbf
 
Worst thing ws listening to MMM as I walked home from the game Saturday night, and caller rings up and lays into Cale as if he was directly responsible for our clubs current plight, Cancer & the Holocaust. Lucky Browny stuck up for Cale, while noting he is a frustrating player, that he was reasonably good that night.

Goggles need to come off a fair percent of our supporters. I'm an unabashed Cale fan, and these days go out of my way to ensure those around hear about it when he does well.

I'm a Cale fan as well but the bloke has hardly set the world alight over the last few years. While I was very pleased with his game over the weekend it's premature to give the bloke a toast - just like it's premature to get stuck into Watts after he has one bad game.

When Cale can string these types of games together then we can get excited. Until then we can be pleased but stay reserved until he can show us he has added consistency to his game.
