News Caleb Marchbank nominates Carlton

Why not have Rowe back up forward? That was his original position.
He seemed lost with no confidence when we first picked him up.
Playing down back has made him confident again.
Might be time to swing him back as a forward.
Could not hurt, be better than Jones or Levi surely.
Thoughts?

Having rowe in the team definitely gives us flexibility and we could see him used forward or in the ruck more next season if marchbank comes. Or weiters could be the one pushed forward with rowe staying down back?

If they improve us, absolutely yes. GWS have an unbelievable amount of talent on their list at the moment and if we can benefit from that then we should take advantage of it.
If they were that talented theyd be getting games at senior level. Another 3 whileys and jackschs on the list...

Rowe was our second best key position defender this season, bloody oath some are dead keen to put him out to pasture, reckon he could still another 2 seasons in him, i'm going potty at the suggestions we should get rid of him.

He's a solid contributor in a poor team. I see why people like him (he's a good person and very determined). But BB our and our new game plan demands ball use and decision making and he is poor at both. He will not be in our best 22 within 12-18 months.

It's far too simplistic to look at things that way.

We've never seen more talent on one AFL list than we are seeing now with GWS, and the reality is they're only going to get stronger.

Good footballers have left and been pushed out and that will continue to be the case. To look at those leaving and put a line through them because they weren't getting regular senior game time is erroneous.

Of course they also have players who won't make the grade but you can't lump them all in the same basket.

100% spot on.

Exactly... People forget that Cam McCarthy for instance has been out all season. If he was available, who would they leave out? Patton? Lobb? Cameron? By that logic one of those guys would be no good if Cam McCarthy was playing!

& there's nothing worse than lumps in your basket.

The player GWS sent to the Bulldogs is playing in a Grand Final and the player Western Bulldogs sent to GWS isnt.

Not sure about that logic. Cordy is playing in a GF ... Cameron isn't. Or a direct trade correlation, Kennedy played in a GF for West Coast, Judd didn't for Carlton.

Was just think Weitering Marchank and Plowman all in the same backline is a very attacting combo.
Bolton must have some serious counter attacting planned for next year.
Going to be very interesting to see how they play together, think in the future we could have the most attacting and versatile defences in the league.

Talk on twitter among one of the most prominent Giants' fans (so admittedly not a huge pool) that they rate MB as 100% a first rounder around Pick 14. Scoffed at suggestions that we could get him, Pickett + Stewart for less than 5.

Let's hope SOS already has a good deal in place keeping 5 out of the equation.

Ah yes, a voxpop of people who still mentally operate in the barter system; truly we are in for the fight of our lives.

Laidler is playing in a GF after being delisted by Madhouse!

Can only wish him the best. After showing himself to be a very reliable intercept marker in 2011 his development stalled completely under Malthouse and he was forced to play out of position at VFL level.

Was a likeable bloke and a fantastic clubman too.

At cost price, Marchbank and Stewart are worth Pick 14, but factor in injuries and lack of exposure at AFL level and together they work out to be an early second rounder. I think SOS will engage other clubs, swap some mid-range picks and balance the trade so Pick 5 remains with us.

No doubting Marchbank's talent though. GWS rate him highly and his intercept marking ability, athleticism and footy IQ make him and ideal modern AFL defender - provided he is developed correctly.

On Pickett - I feel as a whole we're underrating him and suggestions of a 3rd round draft pick, in spite of his injuries, just won't cut it. The guy is a former Pick 4, who has immense skill and a big engine. GWS know how good he could be and won't be selling him cheaply; particularly given he is contracted and hasn't had the opportunity to prove himself. He won't be tacked on the end of the trade just because we want him to be.

This years scenario is much different to the 4 fringe players the Giants were happy to release.

And they'll be very clever on which ones they can afford to give up, and for what. You can't just look at it as a talented team giving up some of their talent - that is what's simplistic. Make no mistake, apart from Marchbank, it's a trade for depth over talent. We still have to bring them into the side and give them a role so we can eventually topple the first string that the likes of GWS have at their disposal. If it's such a great move, why aren't all the other clubs lining up to reap the benefits?

It makes more sense to chase the ones you really want and to treat each trade on its merits, rather than act the pauper and give up the only riches you have for glorified cast-offs. GWS will be playing us for fools if they get pick 5 from us and we don't at least get 7 back. We can make the rest up with later picks.
