I didn’t realise people didn’t want Serong! His pre-draft write-up is like “was better than the guy rated best midfielder in the draft in many games. Has so much leadership he could be the pied piper of Hamlin but wouldn’t need the music. Perhaps could get better at kicking while being tackled by 3 players simultaneously”… and people were like “noooooooo!”.

It’s an amusing read, and a reminder of how drafting is very subjective (and the pre-draft write-ups tend to be absurdly positive!!)
I think a lot of it was people being attached to the WA prospect (Robertson) as always.

You got to approach the draft with the right attitude. Have "your horse" right up until selection, it's fun and you can feel real smart reviewing 10 5 minute YouTube clips for an expert opinion. When the pick is made, back the guys who do nothing but interview and review players every day and realise you have no idea in comparison

I remember liking him at the time because he was a little angry ant. Oodles of competitive spirit. I had a similar comment when we picked up Treacy - aggro and competitiveness is massively underrated at draft time. Give me two guys like Serong and Treacy, who love it physical and want to win at costs, over an athlete who doesn't really care about winning.

I like to think this is why Walls and co went for him in the end, moreso than his ability. His desire for improvement is real.

Overall though the best part of this draft is that Carlton were targeting both Serong and Young.

It’s interesting, I actually wonder the same looking at Reid for WC. Has such a mature body that you’d think development would probably have to be mostly between the ears.

In retrospect, it’s evident that Serong is an incredibly driven individual, even for an AFL player, which has served him well. Long may it continue!!

Interesting observation Minz. Serong has always seemed calm, calculated and team orientated whilst Harley Reid seems loose. Plenty of talent but not quite able to harness it to his teams best advantage.

I wouldn't swap Caleb Serong for any single player in the AFL.

From memory there was a school of thought that Serong didn't have a high ceiling and had peaked early - making him the boring safe pick.
This is hilarious as it applies equally to Brayshaw. He was seen as a really boring pick too, in his draft.

Gotta say, I love being bored.

This is the bit I don't understand. I played senior footy well into my thirties. Missing a season or two due to work. So maybe 200 games.
I would have looked like a super star with 10 minutes of me starting each season on YouTube. The other 30 hours a season I was plum average.
I don't even bother looking at clips anymore any more.

Noobersmusch's videos are really good, they are all involvements for the game, the good and the bad. You can get a bit from them

You're right, except for Young. The 20 seconds showing THAT kick on his highlight video was enough to know he was Football Jesus - still can't believe he fell to us (and we pissed SOS off so much he put a bid in on Henry and then picked up Kemp and Philp to complete his dream team with Stocker [emoji1787]).

Good article on the freo website about Caleb's career so far. He already holds the club record for disposals in a game, club record for clearances in a game and club record for tackles in a game. He's 158 disposals short this year (with 4 games to go - not sure if it only applies to regular season?) of breaking Neales season disposal record and one GA medal short of the club record for them aswell. Not to mention the AFL record for consecutive games over 20 disposals that he has, his rising star, goal of the year and Doig medal wins, plus AFLPA best first year player and best young player awards. Thats all in his first 100 games!
