Re: Breaking News!!

We wouldn't take Sam Power as a straight swap surely.

It seems a pretty pointless thing to do. Bring a guy in to play reserves.

If we are talking to Sam Power, then I'd say there will be a little more to the deal.

Either we get a draft pick on traded from another club, or another more appropriate player...but what will we get for Callan? Not much.

All we should be after is a draft pick, not a recycled hack.

I can't imagine there's a quality young player around that a club is willing to give up for Tim Callan.

Re: Breaking News!!

From memory, we were pretty keen on Power way back in the 2001 Draft. Of course, as things would turn out, Jimmy Brownlow was the man.

Agree with the general consensus here though; Power wouldn't add much. Outside finisher, maybe, but he'll struggle to break into the team that demands much, much more.

Re: Breaking News!!

We are only a couple of injuries away from not having a quality crumbmer.

We're only a couple of injuries from not having a quality ruckman. We're only a couple of injures from not having a quality tall forward. We're only a couple of injuries from not having a quality tall defender. We're only a couple of injuries short of not having...etc, etc, etc.

The reality is in terms of depth, only our midfielders exceed the small forwards. We have Chapman, Stokes, Johnson, Byrnes, Varcoe and Djekurra, as well as a pinch hitter in Owen. Compare that to our backmen stocks: anyone gets injured and we have to bring in one of Playfair, Hunt and Spencer. I'd rather be recruiting some quality tall defenders than yet another small forward.

Maybe the trade involves an upgrade of a pick in the draft as well?

It's all conjecture at this stage anyway.

Are you saying that you wouldn't like him on the list? Surely you jest?
Outside Chapman and Stokes I would rate Shermen ahead of anyone else on our list at the moment.
Varcoe is still 1-2 years away from being a good, consistent player.
Byrnes is a hack and cannot kick goals.
Tenace is gone and is more of a midfielder running back type.
Djerrkura is a in and under midfielder.
Davenport still not on senior list and more of a midfielder
.
We are only a couple of injuries away from not having a quality crumbmer.
I for one think he would be a good pick-up.
If you are going to quote me then quote the whole thing.I've already stated that I believe that Sherman is ahead of those players except for Chapman and Stokes. Johnno is not a small crumbing forward.

Re: Breaking News!!

surely a pick would be a better option, even if is like a 3rd or 4th rounder..
i been very happy with our recritment department would the lower picks recently, they should have enough confidence unless is a really shallow draft this year.

This has Ben Finnin written all over it. The only reason for this would be to release a bit of salary cap pressure.

Re: Breaking News!!

Mike Sheahan tagged along one day to see what goes on when coaches and talent scouts interview potential draftees...on this occasion Bomber and I assume Wellsy went and interviewd Sam Power from memory. The reason I recall was the last question was.."what do you do if you are playing against your brother?"...and I am fairly sure the question related to Luke at the lions.

Assuming I am correct in my recollections...that interview last week if it took place will be of some significance I imagine if indeed we end up trading with the doggies at some stage this week.

Re: Breaking News!!

Power is 190 cm isn't he? What position would he be looking at playing for the cats? Maybe Milburn's spot if Milburn has plans to retire in the next couple.

Curious as to where exactly Sam power would fit and why he would be interested in going to the cats knowing he is will struggle to get a game.

Still we are not going to get much for Callan. I'd be happy enough with Power if he if he was on a low wage.

Some players who struggle at clubs can go elsewhere and thrive, maybe they are willing to take a risk or two in regards to this because or list is so strong, if it pays off great, if it doesn't it wont hurt us. Power could be a pretty slick Half back IMO, he has nice skills.

Why? The part I quoted was the only relevant part to the argument. Your whole argument is based around the fact we don't have enough smalls...yet we clearly do, no matter where Sherman slots in in terms of talent. I mean, we could go for Judd because he'd be better than all our midfielders, but we don't need him because our current midfield works perfectly well and we have plenty of talent sitting in the twos. The same applies here. Yeah, Sherman would be better than Varcoe, Byrnes, Djekurra, Gamble etc. So what? He's still not needed, whereas a decent back-up tall defender is.

Re: Breaking News!!

Although Power has had a more fruitful career then Callan, they are in similar boats. Both good players that struggle to make there teams best 22(more so in Callan's case). Callan has 15 games and Power 80 odd. But they have both had enough time at their clubs and maybe they would both benefit from a change. As they are to good to simply delist.

Sherman to the cats was brought up as a swap for Callen!!Sherman much more talented than Callen and therefore a good result, was my point.
I agree that the area we need to top up is KPBackman.
This will be done in the draft I assume.Sherman is a ball carrier, lightening quick and kicks goals.Would get a game ahead of Byrnes any day of the week.

Re: Breaking News!!

I think it would be more likely that we would be thinking of him as on trade material.

For eg.
Callan to the Dogs
Power to us then Power to Brisbane to play with his brother
Sherman to us . Handy H/Forward

Of course Brisbane does have a ruckman thats wants out. Cam Wood.
Now the Dogs and a few other clubs probably fancy grabing him but maybe if a certain ruckman playing for us wants out( apparently talking to Richmond) then maybe we can make a play for him
if we trade callan for power we cant trade power until the end of next year they are the rules

He'd fit in quite well coming off half back. He's a similar player to Mackie.

The problem is how does he fit into the best backline in the league? Who's he supposed to replace? Mackie? Nup. Woj? Nup. Milburn? :D Umm.
Seriously we might as well keep Callan if we're going to get Power

Steven wells has said all parties have a agreed on the move and will be finalised today with what we get in return.
Good move for both i think he was never gonna crack our 22 so a fresh start for him will do him good.

Please post here when anyone hears what we got in return!

Late pick is all I've heard so you've probably just given him away, very similar to what we did with Shane Birss last year who was in the same situation.

it will be our last pick in the draft. we woulndnt use it anyway. you can then use this for your father son. it could be pick 567 for all that matters. everyones a winner.

Im thinking probably a 3rd round pick would be appropriate, i mean hes no mug, he can play he was just never going to get a spot in the Geelong 22, and with Donohue as a replacement, its logical for him to move on

Hardly. We can't use acquired draft picks on our father/son prospects - pick has to be our own.

Secondly, any draft pick acquired through trade has to be utilised, so technically speaking, it can't just be Pick 567. Any pick we get for Callan will be late in the draft, but usable all the same.
