Cal's farewell lap of honour today.

He's obviously been at the heart of our club since the beginning, setting the benchmark for the waves of young guys coming in on what it takes to be a Giant, laying the foundations for our 'Never Surrender' culture.

For my family, the Giants are a big part of our lives, and it all started for us with Cal. At the start of our 3rd year, my oldest son did an after school Auskick clinic. 4 Giants players attended (Cal, Lobb and 2 others I can't remember). When it finished, my son was still running around trying to kick goals. Cal went out with him and stayed on for about half an hour after the others left and taught him how to kick.

For the next few weeks, all he could talk about was Callan Ward. By that weekend, he was registered for Auskick. We went to the next home game, had a ball and became members that night. 11ish years on, I've got 2 boys that have had invites into the academy, weve barely missed a home game in that time, and most of our extended family are now members with us.

Officially, it's Cal's farewell today, but if the footy gods want to shine a light on a guy that epitomises everything that is good about our game, we'll be having a farewell at Giants HQ on the day after grand final day with a nice shiny trophy.

Let's go Giants !!

Rob Harvey was my fav player of all time, until Cal.
I'll never forget rolling up to a training session 9 years ago with 6 player worn jumpers I'd won at the club's auction.
He not only marshalled the other 5 to sign for me, but spent 10 minutes discussing the season, the game and the club.
A legend on the field, but a magnificent human off the field..

Seems post retirement Ward will be taking on a football role in Victoria. Wish it was with us, but given his family is in Victoria completely understandable and reasonable. Best wishes on his new career, but not when we play whatever team he ends up taking a coaching role with!

RETIRED Greater Western Sydney champion Callan Ward is being courted by clubs in the market for development and leadership coaches, including North Melbourne and Hawthorn.

The 35-year-old is in the process of moving back to Melbourne and is understood to be considering football department roles at Victorian clubs in 2026

Surely we could of found a roll for him.
We offered him roles but he turned us down. Presumably to be based in Melbourne it would've had to have been a scouting or front office role and that's probably not what he's looking for.

A final accolade for Wardy:

Retired GIANTS legend Callan Ward has been recognised for his amazing work in the community, named the winner of the 2025 Tom Hafey Heart of Football Award.

Announced at the 2025 Variety Grand Final Lunch at Crown Palladium in Melbourne on Wednesday, Ward was recognised for his extraordinary commitment to families and sick children across Western Sydney and beyond via his work with the GIANTS Foundation and Rio’s Legacy – a charity focused on advocating and funding for more children’s hospices across Australia.

Awarded annually, the Tom Hafey Heart of Football Award celebrates a current AFL or AFLW player who has made an outstanding impact on children through community work - whether through charity involvement, school or hospital visits, or other generous contributions.

Ward, who recently announced his retirement after a remarkable 18-year career that spanned 327 games, was honoured for his fantastic work as a driving force in the successful campaign alongside Rio’s Legacy to build Western Sydney’s first dedicated children’s hospice, Mounties Care Cottage - only the fourth facility of its kind in Australia.
