Nice work, I'd keep that jumper and a copy of the article too. Could be worth a bit one day.

I just wanted to BUMP this thread because i'm excited about this kids future..

What are we looking at here, Future Captain? Future brownlow winner? Club Champion?

I personally hope he gives westy a run for his money this year and next..

All of the above.

I think he's the Selwood of the 07' draft. From what i have read he comes across as a great young person with dedication beyond belief. I have no doubt in my mind he will lead this club one day.

You think much game time this year?

I'm a strong believer in playing the youngster at the top level and allow him to develop his skills in an elite level instead of learning a VFL style and then staying back in development.

I understand that you can't throw them in the deep end straight away also but do not let them underachive.

Collingwood did it well last year with all their kids playing a handful of senior games.
In the future it will show that those games where possibly vital in their development.

I know ive used the Selwood comparison but i think he will be used in a similar fashion. IIRC he played around 14 games? I think it would be fair to think Ward could play that although im sure mjp would no where hes at in terms of playing at the top level.

needs more muscle i think before he can start making an impact or even to debut. I think he will come in when Everitt did, round 13 or so.

He is starting a little way behind other players - his attitude & work ethic are what casued his stocks to rise prior to the draft. I'd take 22 weeks of decent VFL performances from him over an AFL debut & injury. It will be worth showing some patience.

Agreed. He would still be eligible for the TAC Cup. If he spends some time in the Willi 2's this year, then so be it.

I hope he is injury free, builds a fitness base and starts learning about senior footy in 2008 - that is all. Too much expectation in this thread.

Playing in the seconds will only stun your progress. Your playing against other young kids and not against tough skilled opponents.

All i can remember is when i played 2's i didn't progress anymore then when i moved to the 1's and played a handful of games.
Ofcourse you have to prove yourself to play 1st..

I just don't want this kid to be another Mcguinees or baird or walsh!
Big build up, but no end result.

Disagree totally. If someone is playing AFL before they are physically ready, they will cop injuries which will completely stop their progress.

Patience is a virtue. Guys who take time to develop are often worth the wait ie Gilbee, Foster, Cross, Boyd, Morris, Williams etc.

willi 2's no way this kid had more talent as a 12 yo than some of the guys on willis list,

callan strong enough to hold his own in the ones at willy then push for doggies later in season imo.

:thumbsu::thumbsu: Couldn't of said it better myself...

Wouldn't surprise me if he had a quick rise like Harbrow did last year. He may start in Willi 2's depending on how he goes in the praccies, but I think he may finish the year with 3-5 AFL matches under his belt.

Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. He wasn't exactly a big, intimidating TAC Cup player.

He is a young kid. Depending on who Willi are playing they can only play so many AFL-listed players - if Cal misses out on Willi ones early in the year, well so be it. If he misses out late in the year, so be it. We want a 10 year footballer, not 2 years and out.

As for having 'more talent as a 12 year old', are you sure? He wasn't exactly a walk up start to the Jets squad 12-months ago, so where do you get that from?

P-Money, just out of interest, what VFL club were you playing where playing reserves footy impeded your development at age 17? Reserves footy is part of a natural progression from u18s to seniors -

That said, he might be ready to play AFL Footy in round#1, and good luck to him if he is. But the expectation about this player who has never played a single game of senior footy yet is staggering...If we are looking for improvement, it has to come from Cooney, Griffen, Minson, Higgins, Everitt and the knee recon crew (along with Callan, Hudson and Welsh), and not from Grant, Ward et al.

have been fortunate enough to watch most of hes junior footy very closely, missed some footy 2 years ago but came back the year later dominated top age 16s played finals in the 18s side and did well, but really developed this year.

as for not being a walk up start to jets mate, the recruiting staff at the jets are pretty average, they've been missen talented kids for years.

Why? Why go and watch Spotty u12's? Or does that mean you are one of his mates who played with him? If so, good on you for sticking up for your friend, but I am not trying to drag him down - merely pointing out he is young and currently being over-loaded by expectation. All he needs out of this season is to get through injury free, learn about full-time footy and about the different things required when you are part of a senior footy side. To be honest, if he said he was going to finish school and play at Willi all year, I would not be phased - first year draftees need to watch, learn and develop - any games they get are a bonus.

Without wanting to get into the 'Jets have been missing talented kids for years' quote, I guess that is the reason that all those kids in the Jets zone have been plucked straight from the WRFL/School Footy just like young Wood who the Dogs drafted this year...and why Mark Neeld is now coaching at Collingwood, and Leigh Tudor at Geelong, and Garry Hocking at the Falcons (who just had 7 drafted) etc etc...and if you dont think the coaches pick the teams, then you are simply delusional.
