There have been SANFL clubs that have developed constantly kids for the draft, and others who dont care one bit.
Sturt, an under resourced club with one of the weaker zones produced over half of the SA kids drafted, and have produced top kids for years, while clubs like centrals with a great zone and heaps of cash dont produce any real talent.
This is why the development needs to be done by the AFL clubs who get a benefit ( an academy) or a TAC cup like competition here ran by the SANFL or AFL.

Sturt
Glenelg
Norwood
Eagles

Have all had decent draft numbers over the last few years haven’t they? That’s a bit of a guess though.

I'm confused why you think the SANFL should develop talent so they can go to a different competition and leave theirs

Seems a little Irish

Because they recieve money to do so. Its their job to develop their zones. If they dont want to do it, step away and hand their zone and development money to a club like Sturt that does so.
Simple.

But more than happy to take money from AFL clubs whenever they get the opportunity.

There's no longer a payment to the SANFL clubs for draftees (there is a flat development fee of $50K per SANFL club whether you have zero or 10 players drafted). So for Sturt this draft has been a disaster. They also had hoped Jack Trengove would return after Melbourne dumped him but the Power ruined that and presumably he'll spend the season lined up for the Magpies instead of the Blues.

Rubbish

The SANFL receive money to develop the sport to get as many kids playing as possible whether they can kick 5 m or 50 m it's about the sport not the very very very tiny minority that make the elite game

Don't you get it are you a bit simple

Dont all sporting bodies require pathways?

Where do the SANFL get their talent from? Private and public schools. Amateur and affiliated clubs. What if they had this attitude? The popularity of football in general is due more to the efforts of the AFL rather than the SANFL.

Many kids would be looking to emulate their heroes in the AFL. They all want to play for their favourite AFL club.
I would doubt there would be any kids with a love for footy that would only aspire to play SANFL.

But your attitude seems to be that the AFL as the flagship of Aussie Rules has no place in their planning. That the SANFL is not a rung in the ladder.

Where do you think Soccer would be in this country if we didn’t have pathways to the lucrative overseas competitions or playing in the World Cup?

If you want your sport to be represented by the best athletes in SA then you need to give them a better career choice than just playing at Nourlunga in front of a row of cars tooting their horns.

Not that at all but the SANFL is pretty much responsible for football in this state whether it be the kid playing at streaky bay , port Pirie , mount gambier, Murray bridge , Hallet cove , Salisbury , Hahndorf or Nuriootpa thousands of juniors

With about 10 to 15 kids might get drafted and only half of these succeed you want to throw thousands at 7 or 8 individuals against thousands of players who enjoy the sport and actually go onto to follow it because the enjoy it so much

You need to look at the big picture and think about where the money could be best spent

It's not about the flag ship at all for the state government and the SANFL it's about the sport

Ever considered why the state government allowed the SANFL to be part of the half a billion they spent on their asset being the AO and that doesn't consider the value of AO itself

Survival of the fittest is the problem someone would call it greed I wouldnt as it's all about the clubs spends

With the 2 billion that the AFL receive for the TV rights do you think they should put say $50 million in player development if so

Do you think the clubs would agree to that and maybe the players take a pay cut to allow for it hahahahahaha can you see that happening

I think the SANFL under 18 competition should be scrapped and replaced with a stand alone development competition not reliant on SANFL clubs.

Who will fund it and where will they get their players from they will need to transfer players in they won't get private school kids

Will they use volunteers if so who would volunteer, or go out buy or rent a heap of. Ovals will they use a paid administration paid coaches paid support staff paid umpires infact will they pay players

They won't be able to use private school kids those schools don't allow it and maybe have a look where the majority of players are drafted from

If the SANFL clubs get behind it, im sure the SANFL will fund it. The kids wont get paid, the SANFL clubs can streamline resources to the senior teams. Coaches and volunteers will not be hard to find.

This is the problem the SANFL don't have the cash to find an elite programme they are their for the masses and that is what the State Government want them to do

The SANFL clubs don't have spare cash as will other people if anyone is aware the AFL are involved everyone will have their hand out. Do they charge the AFL for the use of their oval facilities and volunteers

Volunteers aren't easy to find you know because they don't get paid a lot volunteer because of their children but at 17 or 18 years of age most are over it by then. Or they support a club like Norwood because that's what they do or they volunteer in rotary or surf lifesaving or things that benefit the community

Then lastly what do you do about those pesky private schools not allowing their students to play and the majority of draftees are from them

They don't exist to develop juniors for AFL.
YES, that's it in a nutshell. Also why would we want to develop players and have them taken away from us and worse if drafted by crows or them down the road they play against us.

Short sighted if SANFL clubs think that being a pathway to the AFL has no benefit. Personally I would like to see the AFL fund one or two SA teams into the TAC. Most kids are not physically ready for SANFL, but the competitions they do play in dont seem to be strong enough to optimize their development. The TAC seems to be clearly the highest standard of competition that a 17 or 18 year old can get.

Imagine if all of this years draft kids from fogarty to mcpherson and all the others had all played together in the same team in a high calibre competition like the TAC. Cant help but think they would be better for it. Those that dont make the AFL could then enter the SANFL system and be better players than they might have been otherwise.
