Not really because in those weeks the standout U18s in the state are still spread out among U18s, reserves, league and country football. The SANFL comp does benefit from the times the College doesn't play.
In the vats majority of the cases, the boys play SANFL whenever there isn't a school game. This includes preseason, holidays, and post school season.
In fact you can track the success of certain clubs by when they have their private school boys available! North, Norwood, Sturt and Glenelg especially are MUCH stronger during the times the school system isn't playing.
What I mean by utilising those 'college free' weekends is that the U18 competition should have a concentrated period where all the best players in that age group are playing against each other.
There are 8 teams so the SANFL might have 7 'full strength' rounds of U18 football over the course of the season:
- When there are no State U18 commitments
- No college football
- All the best country footballers would prioritse those 7 weekends to travel to Adelaide
- No U18s up playing reserves or league football for those 7 weeks
That would give us the best chance to showcase our talent in that age group, as the TAC Cup does. At the moment our talent is spread too thinly over too many competitions and levels.
