I said Rory Atkins was a dud and wouldn't make it at AFL level. He then became a decent player in the Crows team. I then said I was wrong and he was a good player, then he went to Gold Coast and went back to being a dud. He got me twice.

Around 30 years ago (hopefully i have wised up by now) i made the call watching a young gangly looking Chris Langford line up on the wing and get flogged. He was never making it as a footballer as far as i was concerned. Then after playing him in the ruck they stuck him at full back and the rest is history.

Time flies... Langford retired 28 years ago :)

I thought John Butcher was going to be the next big thing at Port.

I have no idea what it was I thought I saw either.

Thought Tex was finished years ago. He might be finished this year but he's played several years longer than I thought he would.

Thought Carlton would bounce back after a crap start to the season. Pleased to be incorrect hehe

"All time greats..." .... "....of the last 20 years..."

Lets look at JUST the last 20 years. Forget "all time"...

Top 10 last 20 years

Franklin
Lloyd
Jack Riewoldt
Tom Hawkins
Josh Kennedy
Nick Riewoldt
Matthew Pavlich
Jeremy Cameron
Taylor Walker
Eddie Betts

Then after that

Brendan Fevola
Jonathan Brown
Jarryd Roughead

Sam McLure simply has to be the biggest dumb **** nepo baby of all time.
Richardson?

After 2006, I could see all the signs that Geelong needed urgent repairs and would go into a few years of decline while they sorted it out, and that Melbourne was the best placed Victorian team to wrest dominance from the interstaters...

HairyO just made a call worthy of this thread.

Looking back on GAJ and seeing him be a terrible choice by the club?

Hr was brilliant at individual glory and shit at being a team mate.

Jordan Lewis talked about how they would sit off him anywhere outside of F50 and only prrssure him when he was in goal kicking range. They knew that after he disposed of the ball they would get it back.

He was the cream GCS simply didnt need. They needed leaders who would bring the kids up. GAJ had zero interest in that.

Also, pretty sure this thread is about future predictions gone awry.

What I do is look at what David King says and then think the opposite

Is this just in order of goals kicked?

I personally wouldn't have Taylor Walker in "Category 1" if Roughead, Fevola and Brown are in "Category 2".

Walker has been amazing (and miles in front of McKay regardless) but I'd porobably take the other 2 ahead of him slightly (or at least in the same category as him). Fevola kicked a similar amount of goals in much less games with much better season tallies (99, 89, 84, etc whilst Walker kicked 60+ twice and never 80). Roughead was a multiple AA (Walker once), Coleman medallist (Walker not) and kicked only slightly less goals despite 2 years at CHB, 2 years as a 2nd ruck, time in the midfield, etc. All about the same level IMO.

Not sure about timelines but I reckon Barry Hall deserves to be in the convo and if it fits 20 years (some overlap, some not), Warren Tredrea and Matthew Richardson also.

Either way - McKay is not in the ball park - wouldn't even have him ahead of the next rung like Curnow, Daniher, etc.

Oh if Jordan Lewis said it then its gospel.
The guy is the best midfielder of this century. Not a contest, no one even comes close.

To intimate he had no impact on games is purely and simply put. Erroneous.
The only somewhat reasonable argument to make is that he wasn't the right choice for them in 2010 as they were going to lose 20 games a season for about 3 years or so.

It's still an utterly woeful call. Will end up a HoF legend and be considered the best of his era.

Just goals kicked yes

But it's not like McKay or Curnow offer anything outside goals kicked.

Calling them "great fwds of the last 20 years" is absolutely bonkers and only the most nuffy one eyed Blues would even consider it.

Just reveals how thick McLure really is.
