Player Watch Callum Brown (Delisted 2022)

Brown 299 metres gained.

Thomas 151m.

Varcoe 56m.

Only 1 stat but sums up nicely who I thought was the most influential of those 3 yesterday.

Brown isn't a line breaker so you shouldn't be using metres gained to judge his performances. He is playing as a half forward and had 3 shots on goal---2 were absolute sodas. If you are going to play inside 50 or across the 50arc you need to have scoreboard impact. JT would have converted those 2 chances and you'd be more confident ball in his hands shooting for goal than Brown.
Thomas constantly pops up for a goal and has kicked some clutch goals too.
Varcoe's pressure work is exceptional-

I’d much rather have the ball in our hands when we’re under pressure on the scoreboard, and in the midst of one of our patented red-time fades. Browny gets proactive and wins it.

If he improves his kicking he could be Shuey minus 5-10m of kicking distance. The pass to Stephenson was not that of someone who can’t kick.

I can't believe how much quicker Brown appears this year compared to last year.

On Varcoe, he needs to do more than chasing the bloke with the ball. Was dropped once already this season and is in danger again. He has great offensive abilities with ball in hand but he’s not getting enough ball.

I’d be happy if that became his trademark. ‘High pressure last quarter specialist’. Bring it on.:p

Yep. It's one of the reasons I've always been a Langdon fan, even when he used to appear stoned in the first quarter.

He can't get it in his hands because his ball handling is awful at the moment and he appears to have lost a fair bit of confidence in it, because he keeps not even trying to pick it up cleanly but instead tapping it to himself in the hope that it pops up into his hands.

He is playing AFL football, not an especially hard thing to do. I would expect my son in U13's to think to do it. You know he doesn't have much going for him at present if that is what we have to go with.

Of course it doesn't require much talent to run down the clock when taking a set shot. Doesn't mean it wasn't a vital thing he did to win the ball and then kill a minute at that stage in the context of the game.

Reckon he had no interest at any stage in attempting the first one, knew his limits and just wanted to kill time and put it to the top of the square. Probably what Pendles told him to do when he came up to him too.
Second one definitely the kind of chance he'd want to start drilling to consolidate himself in the side.

Agree with the 1st. He was way too far out to make the Distant

Varcoe. I'm usually a fan, but he's out of form. he's getting beaten in one on ones and is fumbling most opportunities that fall his way. Ask Elliott or Stephenson to play as more of a crumber.

Varcoe was shocking and think he has not much left in the Tank

Interesting the Thomas match up re Callum.

I’d still have Thomas nicely in front because Thomas does get those tough goals. Also Josh seems more physically imposing.

But this competition for spots is terrific.

Brown is better then JT. Lot more Upside and does more things

To all of those being critical of him...
He has played less than 20 games.
He is a kid.
He is showing plenty of promise.
He stays.
Just like we persevered with Maynard early on we should continue to persevere with Brown.
It will pay off.

Otto has spoken, end of argument.
That's fine for the future, nobody is arguing that, but we are in the gun now, the flag beckons and he won't keep Mayne, Sier or Billy out. So for his own sake he'd be spewing he blew those opportunities.

My personal opinion is that there are a couple of players I would be dropping at the moment before him.
Greenwood if he is not going to be given a tagging role and Varcoe on current form are a couple of examples.

I’ll do my best not to hi jinx him.

I was a mega Gavin Brown fan.

Greenwood yes, Varcs is a funny one, I would have agreed 2 weeks ago.

When the time comes to stop developing players and teams we may as well give up.

For mine there are still a couple of positions available in a team, possibly more.
There’s a few positions available, but we play who’s better not who’s played less games.

He has been able to execute that shimmy he has for 2 standout moments for him in the past 2 games.

The missing of easy opportunities, including that easy one late that absolutely ends the game was disappointing.

He seems to sweat on the ball in a contested situation at the moment rather than being a true in and under extractor, which at his size and style can limit his involvement and relevance to games.

Right now we need to play our best possible team to best Port Adelaide, the number 1 goal is not the development of kids.
