Been a tiger fan for many years

Its been a long time since I have seen a youngster use the ball as well as howat.

A big big suprise. Looks the wrong body type to make it at this level, but may have the skill and nouse to compensate.

Very very good skills and excellent decision making.

He has effectively ended tommy roaches career.

I think Howat may be a testament to having a good player development programme. It seems as if under Plough we have a structure in place were our players are getting the best out of themselves faster.

senior players having best ever years are as follows

Simmo
P Bowden
Tivers
Pettifer
Hyde
Shultz

Youngsters taking a step forward this year

Raines
Lids
Bling
Patto
Howat
polo
Meyer
Foley
White

Good signs at tigerland when the senior players are improving and the youngsters are developing. Maybe we are not that far away from finals football afterall.:thumbsu:

I wouldnt say Libba had the body type to play AFL level but still has a brownlow around his neck.

Howat's disposal is the best I've seen from all our kids I reckon. So far so good.

21 years of age.

Should be compared development wise to someone of similar age: Moore, Rodan etc.

He is not a kid.

That said he has looked handy the last couple games, yet I think he is a tad overrated on these boards..

Like everyone else I'd like nothing more than for him to turn out top notch but at 180cms (odd) and such a small frame for a non-first year player he's going to have to be very good.

well for a start bents rodan was born in 1983, so he is 23 this yr

moore was born in 1984 so he is 22

other players who are 21 born in 1985 at richmond are

foley
hartigan
roach
shultz

He has shown more than Roach allready, and he has only been on an AFL list for 2 months.

Even if you do compare to Rodan or Moore, he has gone right past them.

cheers, and good to see you still do your research these days:thumbsu:

Hes gonna be a great player. White also is looking like a star of the future which looks very bright for us we have a lot of youngsters performing very well and i mid-age seniors also are looking good. Al we need is to gel and were a force.

might be under rating him a tad Bentleigh, i wouldnt have thought its that simple to slot into AFL footy and average 20 possies a game in first 2 appearances. Reminds me of Roger James from Port Powers engine room..I like his style ..:thumbsu:

Not at all, I am impressed by the lad.

Looks a good find.

Just hope he doesn't turn into the next Daniel Jackson on this board.

To be honest I am disappointed with this board. Everytime a youngster (mind you this guy isnt even young) plays a good game you all jump on and start comparing him to all the superstars in the afl. I heard someone compare him to dal santo? What the hell is that? Richmond always places too much pressure on low draft picks if they rip it in their first few games. Then, these guys get too much pressure from the expectation and the increased attention they get from opposition taggers. Next thing you know they are being delisted after only 30 odd games.

Also, I think richmond as a club has lowered its standards significantly because of the poor ball use of our senior players. Just because it seems as though Howat can kick, doesnt mean he should be playing afl level. Hes not overly quick, hes not strongly built. He doesnt have great aerial skills or a particularly good tackle. So he has 1 element of many... You need at least 3 major skills to be a good midfielder i reckon.

:) GOTTA say. Watched him closely in the warm-up against the Doggies and I shook my head. Skills didn't look flash. But once the real stuff started it was a totally different story. He uses it better than ALL players on our list. One of the real success stories for us in 2006. Could not have been any more impressive in his first two outing and have no doubt he can keep it up.

From what I have seen - no comparison to Roach, Rodan, Moore and the like. Howat is all class.

And as pointed out on this thread, encouraging signs at Tigerland with so many blokes having career best years and the emergence of our young brigade of Deledio, Polo, Meyer, Tambling, Pattison and White, and others such as Hughes, McGuane and Oakley Nicholls getting a taste of it!

Take a bow Terry!!!:)

This is what im trying to get across.

Thursfeild - Scarlett
Howat - Dal Santo

Spot on again.

He's looked decent enough in the last couple games but there isn't alot of him, and isn't all that fast. Going to need more than being a good kick to play 150+ games..

not sure that Jacko has really made any impression at senior level other than a flash here and there within a game ...accept its early days but seems to have plenty of ability

Quick one what has Thursfield done wrong, other than hold Reiwolt for most of a game in round 2. Other than that I cant remember seeing him much last year. As for Jacko in those early days this year, at least he is trying. He actually is the only question I have of TW what is happening with him ?

Thursfield has done nothing wrong. But hes done nothing to indicate hes going to be as good as scarlett. I'll say one thing about jackson, i like the way he leads. Other than that, average average average.

What I mean who ever said he was going to be another Scralett, I moderate this board and even though I only post infrequently I try to at least scan most threads that come in here and I cant remember a constant thread comparing him to Scarlett, Jacko with Vioss actually. I cant remember any one thinking so, however I also wouldn't right him off or call him a failure just yet . The simularities at the moment are the hairs on his head.

The Voss comparison may have been mentioned once or twice but I doubt it was anywhere near a constant comment.

Jacko by the way, this is only my opinion, I would rate as somewhere between good and average because he is definatly a strong lean as you noted.

I think you will find that Cam Howat also has a huge motor... maybe more of a Chris Hyde type.

That gives him:
  • Smarts / Decision making ability
  • Superb delivery by foot
  • Huge Motor

3 elements that can help make him as a midfielder. The more time he spends on an AFL list. the better his physical conditioning will become, so he won't continue being as weedy.

Thursfeild did very little wrong. I liked the look of him and was angry at the world for quite a while after he did his knee. Just that a couple good games from a young player doesn't equal superstar; as has happed when Jacko, Thursty and now Howat.

Goodness knows where Jackson is at.

Only thing Daniel Jackson has to worry about is his Vce results. As afl footy he is not up2 it. He would be one i would look at delisting.

As for Howat 2 perfect no skill errors game. Puts most to shame really.
