Live footage of danster when he realized he had a new opportunity to shit on Rayner and hope he never amounts to anything more than a 2010 era Demon future prospect:

Rayner at present is playing a 3rd tall defense role not a HB role. Good for his development but there is a good reason for the change.
It is because Gardiner, our regular 3rd defense tall, had not had any contract training at that time, (still may not have).
Gardiner had off season shoulder surgery and looks likely to miss round 1, possibly more.
So, Rayner is trialing in the position and so far has been good. See how he goes against the Cats.

Our likely half backs are Coleman, Rich and McKenna.
Then we have Answerth who also had offseason shoulder surgery (23 games at HB in 2023) but also no sim games to date, and a few others waiting.
Also, we have Wilmot playing wing at present. He has only played 3 AFL games, all in finals, and all at half back.

I imaging Rayner goes back to his usual forward/midfield role when Gardiner returns.

That man Marcus also buggered with concussion?

Yes he is out for the season so i did not mention him.
Sad but Marcus has most likely played his last AFL game.

Andy Brayshaw & LDU will put the Rayner pick to the sword this season.

Welcome to the Paddy Dow club, Cam.

How good is a completely subjective bigfooty page full of the hottest takes!

Players I would take before Rayner from 2017

Brayshaw
Naughton
Bailey
Kelly (although probably more for output past vs future)
Fritsch

Players i might as long as there was no transaction loss, and depending what needs i had on a list (i.e. the optics of dumping Rayner)

LDU
Cerra
Fogarty
Starcevich
McCartin
Ryan

Fair bit to play out. Rubber is hitting the road for Cam. I reckon he could really hit his straps and end up a top 5 from his draft year which is a good result from any pick (pick 1 doesn't have a great history) but if he plateaus might struggle to be top 10 which would be disappointing.

As ever no kid ever demands being pick 1, and the lions got him, Starcevich and Bailey from that draft. That's a tremendous trioi so there are no red faces from the lions from 2017

Plus Lester is out at the moment. So are really missing 3 potential guys to play the third tall role - hence Rayner being flexible to help the team out.

Could Rayner leave Bris for mid time?
He's not out of contract until 2025 when he will be a RFA, can not see him going anywhere until then at the earliest, also he currently does not have the endurance to be a full time mid although it is improving slowly.

To be honest I wasn't a big fan of him in his first decent hit out at halfback. Hopefully this isn't fages last ditch effort at making him into an afl footballer. I have my concerns for sure. Maybe a little accountability will help his cause.

The only reason you take Rayner over anyone there is on potential now.

Remember when people rated him as a future star?

Going to be a decent 200 game player but a pretty poo number 1 pick

Who are the elite number 1 picks? Hodge, Walsh and possiblt Weitering. Rowel probably would be if not for injuries. So 3 in 22 years. I would say it is incredibly unlikely to be an elite player if picked at nunber 1. If Rayner turns out to be a 200+ game player that plays his role then l think most Lions fans will be happy.

I would argue Weitering hasn't lived up to his hype either. But ahead of rayner for sure.

Weitering 3 time AA squad and arguably should have been in the team twice... wot? He's no Alex Rance but I hardly think you can be upset with that sort of return this early in his career.

Nick Riewoldt?

There has been a few. They are rarely the best players in their drafts though. I'd add Riewodlt, Deledio, Gibbs, Murphy and Cooney to that list

You missed Sam Taylor who was literally in the AA team. Throw in Balta, Ed Richards, Petty, Liam Baker, Mihocek, Dylan Moore etc.. Dylan Moore is already one of the best players in his position in the whole competition for example.

Tom De Koning would also have higher trade worth.

To be top 5 in his draft year he'd have to be AA and probably win a BnF and a norm smith medal if we're being honest as the others have already produced so much in their careers to date that it would take something remarkable. He has all the physical traits to become a good player but it seems he just doesn't have the ability to find the pill.

Not sure if l would put Gibbs and Murphy in that list. Reiwoldt definitly, didn't watch enough of Delideo/Cooney to give an accurate judgement.

Murphy yes, Gibbs no. Murphy played on too long but was incredible before injuries made him just pretty good.

Gibbs had the talent but never had the drive imo.
