His decisive goal to restore our 27-point lead and snuff out any hope of Geelong mounting a charge - that was the moment for me.

Snapping Blicavs and Smith in half were tasty bonuses, though!

game was won IMO when neale dobbed that beauty from 50 on the run.

all the momentum and vibes were with brisbane from that point, and it was obvious they had no one who could go with a fresh neale, plus then the scottish suitcase got off the chain

With the benefit of hindsight, I agree - that’s when we broke them.

But when they hit the scoreboard to bring it back to 21, I am glad Cam was there to crush any rising hope.

Every team needs a burst player. That's what Cam is for us. He will rarely give you a full 4 quarter performance, but when we break a game open, he's always one of the biggest contributors to it. That's why he was tagged yesterday. Scott recognised that Rayner was always decisive in our bursts, so he tried to keep him out of the game.

In the broader context of Brisbane's list as it stands, he has proven himself to be a great number 1 pick.

They've struck an amazing balance in their midfield of consistent A and B-graders that you can expect to perform at that level most weeks (Neale, McCluggage, Dunkley and Berry), the x-factor players that will be less consistent but are capable of being damaging in ways the aforementioned are not (Rayner, Bailey), and then Will Ashcroft who is a freakish combination of both those categories (wouldn't surprise me if the same can be said about Levi soon).

People can whinge about academies – though they'd have all the players I mentioned regardless of academies – and FS all they want, but their talent identification and list management as a whole has been unbelievable over the last decade.

Absolutely awesome visuals of Cam coming off the square to sack mids. That would be terrifying for any center bounce player who takes the ball from a bounce and then tries to find a player - BANG

Loved it. Haven't had that in the team since Beau Waters.

Rayner was average yesterday, sure he had a few tackles and a goal that fell in his lap, but all-in-all he was carried by the rest of the lions team
Rayner was instrumental in us maintaining momentum.

1. Tackle on Bliclavs at the opening bounce of the fourth quarter. Cameron marks and goals. Helps the team maintain the rage of the end of the third.
2. Tackle on Bailey after Geelong are gifted a goal to stop Geelong getting a clearance and arrest any potential Geelong momentum.
3. He goes forward, kicks a goal 30 seconds later, built on the pressure he helped his side build throughout the start of the final quarter.

He is not going to impact a game for four quarters, but he only needs 5 minutes and a few moments to help us win, because his moments are massive.

Yeah not sure why it seems so difficult to understand that he doesn’t need to have 25+ touches or 3+ goals to do exactly what we need from him.

Guess it’s only difficult to understand for people that don’t watch him or the Lions very often or only ‘box score’ watch

No i was there, I was watching him quite closely.... he was shit!!!!

He gave a few average free kicks and was trailing O'Connor for most of the match. Those plays that the poster before you is referring too happened when the game was getting away from Geelong and the Brisbane mids and half backs had already broke the cats spirts.

And it was still exactly what we needed, he helped put the game to bed along with the rest of the team. Can feel pretty comfortable saying I’m stoked that he’s a Lions player and couldn’t care less about taking him with pick 1

Look he is a good player, im not doubting that, im just saying he wasn't that good yesterday.

Brisbane won the battle in the middle and across half back. Geelong's backs were actually not that bad, its just that the wave infront of them was too much to handle in the end.

Given the 2017 draft and what Brisbane aleady have I think TDK is the only improvement.

McL is the same player as LDU. Bailey the best small forward.

Rayner was 100% right for X factor. He needs to come and do his job and hes done it.

Brisbanes recruiting cant be questioned.

I agree with the rest of your post but I find the comparison of Clug to LDU so insanely offensive lol.

Don't take it personally. I mean in terms of <TYPE>, and <STYLE> of player. Obviously Mcluggage is much more refined and proven as a player. I'm suggesting that Brisbane wouldn't need LDU in a free for all selection scenario from that particular draft. I'd imagine TDK would be their 2017 free for all pick as of today.

the margin was 19 points when rayner cut Blicavs in half, Ashcroft takes the advantage and Charlie kicks the goal

its the first centre bounce of the 4th qtr and the games on the line

The next goal we kick is Rayners goal getting the margin back out and was the moment the game was over

Dual premiership player. Executed several important and devastating tackles. What's not to love.

Still a little torn on him. A classic "multiple things can be true at once" player.

On the one hand, for a number 1 draft pick, he has definitely underperformed. Doesn't get big numbers, and does go missing for big chunks of games. A lot.

BUT...

He has worked out a way to involve himself in the last two finals (as he did last year). Fagan was smarter yesterday and didn't isolate him in the goalsquare so he at least was around the ball a little more. Gradually got some touches and involvement, and those tackles in the last quarter were brutal (and effective, both the Blicavs and Smith ones led to goals). Then popped up with a goal himself.

So you'd love him to get 20 touches instead of 10, but through gritted teeth you have to admit he contributed when it mattered.
