Time to fire up the hype thread on this young man.

Knocked out his second FC century over the weekend in his 11th FC match with a FC batting average now bordering 40. He's also done this @ no.6 for WA, which is also the most contestable test position at the moment.

He's however known to be a bowling allrounder, with 28 wkts @ 21.53 and a SR of 41.3 as probably the best young bowling prospect in the shield at the moment.

Being managed from back soreness from bowling at the moment and he only turned 20 a few months ago.

This man is literally the guy selectors have been waiting for almost 2 decades now, so the question has to be asked, when? (not if) will he be selected for the test side?

I think he's going to need to get back to full time bowling to be considered, however the one advantage of his introduction to the test side would be he wouldn't be required to shoulder the bowling, only contribute 10 or so overs an innings.

So with Australia only touring Bangladesh before facing the one off test home test against Afghanistan before the big India 20/21 tour, is it likely the selectors try and introduce him at some point before the Indian tour, even as just a specialist bat?

It's also conceivable in the future once he matures that if he averages sub 25 with the ball at test level, that he would replace the 3rd seamer and we'd bat down to 7 & 8.

He's currently averaging 76, which is the highest average in the shield this season:

certainly worth keeping an eye on.

still only 20 years old.

let's hope he continues the way he's going and who knows, he could produce close to keith miller numbers.

Lol, no pressure!

No rush with this guy. He could debut in three years time and would still be very young for an Australian international cricketer.

Age should not come into whether he is selected or not.If the selectors think he is good enough select him.

Experience should - play him now, he will fail and could do sever damage - let him bust the door down - if he is good enough, he will still be good enough in 2 or 3 years time.

We have a weird fascination with finding the 'next big thing' rather than concentrating on the blokes in the side and developing them. No one will get anywhere if we keep casting blokes aside after 1-2 series

Harris, Renshaw, Finch, Patterson, Bancroft, Cartwright just in the last couple seasons. Granted some probably shouldn't have been there but can't keep turning over the line-up at the rate we are

A few shield games ago he averaged in the 20s with the bat

I'd be more interested in sending him off to England to play county or asia to learn the spinning decks.

FWIW - it would be good for him to spend some time around the squad and face some balls in the nets

Look at him for selection in 2 years time and a body of work
If he continues this kind of form over the next year I don't see why you wouldn't consider him for the test team for next summer.

Holding a young player back for the sake of it seems pretty silly to me.

Too Early. Let him develop his game at this level.

We need to learn our lesson from Mitch Marsh. Mitch's career at that age was similar and fast tracked into the team a few year later due to his talent/potential over form.

Let Green work his craft at shield level for a couple seasons, in the mean time go with the 6 best batsmen and play the most in form senior all rounder when needed.

Well that's a sentence I thought I'd never hear, wanting someone to "learn from Mitch Marsh"...can think of a few others for him to learn from just quietly.

It's from the developmen/selectiont of Mitch Marsh.

I genuinely don't understand the obsession Aussie media and fans have with fast tracking young talent into the test side. Unlike some other nations, Australia have the luxury of have an elite domestic comp and have no need to fast track young guns into the side. Let them nurture and develop their game for their state for a couple years. This is my opinion on Will Pucovski as well.

little bit different with pucovski though.

if he is ok mentally, then it's almost time to pick him or next cab off the rank or very close to it.

khawaja and patterson could still be on the selectors radar.

i mean we just about tried and given a go to every other half decent batsman on the first class scene
(bancroft, harris, renshaw, doolan, finch, handscomb, bailey, ferguson, cartwright, m.marsh, s.marsh, maddinson)

No need to change a winning team. Green certainly captures the imagination, but no way would I consider him for Test selection at this time. I've followed the game for many years and could write a book about all the "Wonder kids" who burst on the scene but never live up their expectations. Wickets and runs in the Sheffield for a season or so and then assess it from there.

We shouldn't hold someone back who is good enough to play. If they're good enough, they don't need to prove it for two or three years IMO.
In saying that, I think some more time in shield cricket wouldn't hurt Green at the moment especially with his back. In saying that if he continues to pile on runs in the shield we shouldn't exclude him just because he's not bowling.

Big worry would be injuries if he played a test summer so soon, he is so young but would be expected to do a lot of bowling in 5 days games on flat tracks.

Perfect way to get him in would be if carey eventually bats 6, you could put green in as a bowling allrounder at 7 and take some of the pressure off his batting, still think young allrounders do better when the bowling is their trade the batting the happy bonus.

Well it would be better than playing Mitch Marsh at least, that's a positive.

Still think Green is 2 years away. No reason why Nesser can't be the A/R anyway

Marsh has a superior first class record to Nesser, don't think he is the answer we're looking for. I'd prefer to run with Head at six for now.

In saying that Greens batting has been pretty impressive, as he's been scoring his runs when the team has been in trouble, rather than coming in and belting easy runs without pressure. If he keeps it up I'd be keen to see him fast tracked.
