If Vic bias gripe is about Maxwell specifically, I think based on the goss. I have heard/read any bias against Maxwell (beyond just not thinking he's Test standard) was because Smith thought(thinks?) he was a prick, not because he's Victorian.

Perhaps the coaches of all state sides should have more of a say in selecting the test side. Not sure about Victorians are hard done by when it comes to test selection but for a side that has done so well in the shield over the last few years a surprise very few have played for Australia.
Finch, Harris, Handscomb, Maddinson, they’ve all had shots. They’re just not up to it. The only player you could argue has been hung out to dry is Maxwell, that’s it. The Australian bowling attack has been settled for a long time, no one’s getting a look in no matter where you’re from in that area

The problem with Maxwell was that since being recalled he made a ton, a bunch of starts and then got dropped for the Ashes, not allowing him to have a chance at making runs at home like so many other players have.

Maddinson was a NSW player at the time of being selected tbf. He probably deserves another chance if he continues to pile on Shield runs, given the current state of the batting.

I think there was issues from memory a couple of seasons back when Smith was captain of Australia with Maxwell.Correct me if I am wrong but Maxwell was critical of Wade 1 shield game when Wade was the Vict.keeper and batted in front of him.

Yep, Smith called him disrespectful and publicly criticized him (which with how PR heavy CA is these days I feel represents Maxwell being very firmly shunted out of the setup). More psychoanalytical but you also had Smith mocking his leave to get bowled from the BBL as part of some cricket game marketing stuff, which you'd think would normally be banter, but with the other stuff (and the way Maxwell has described that leave affecting him on personal level) I think it's significant.

On Wade stuff from 2016:
Australia's captain Steven Smith has criticised Glenn Maxwell and the team leadership group have fined him an undisclosed amount for comments deemed disrespectful to the team's gloveman and Victoria captain Matthew Wade.

In what Smith clearly hoped would be the end of an unseemly episode that began when ESPNcricinfo reported Maxwell had tried to leave the Bushrangers for New South Wales outside the approved window to do so, he explained that he had told Maxwell and the team as a whole that more respect had to be shown for each other. Smith also declined to confirm whether Maxwell would be playing on Sunday, stating only that he was "available for selection".

"Everyone was disappointed in his comments, I've expressed that to him myself and spoke to the team," Smith said on Saturday ahead of the first Chappell-Hadlee ODI. "One of our values is respect, having respect for your team-mates, your opposition, your fans, your media.

"I thought what he said was very disrespectful to a team-mate and his Victorian captain. The leadership group got together and we decided to fine Glenn, we thought that was sufficient punishment, so we've gone down that path. I was disappointed with the comments that he made."

There was also this in 2018:
"It's obviously unlucky on Glenn but if we look back at his last 20 one-dayers I think he's averaged around 20," Smith told reporters in Sydney.

"He's come back and played some pretty good Shield cricket, but we just want to keep seeing consistent performances from him and just keep putting his name up there.

"That's the most important thing for him."

...

"Just looking at the way he trains, I think he could train a little bit smarter," Smith said.

Not the sort of thing you see someone saying publicly about a bloke who is part of the setup I think.

Just had a look at Maxwell's shield figures for season 2017/18 after playing in the Indian tests (his last test game) and that 278 must have been an impressive knock.Going through all those Victorian shield games that season I found a Will Pucovic innings batting at No.4 for the Vic,s,188,he must have been very young then and another good knock and seems once he gets to 100 he does not throw his wicket away.

Yeah Wade and Maxwell have always butted heads....maybe one of the reasons wade went to tasmania and Maxwell has had issues with Smith as well

I have always maintained that Maxwell should of gone somewhere else for a decent crack at the test team he tried NSW but that's too close to the boys club.....move to QLD SA WA

Good to see some Vic's still living with their inferiority complex. Not only that is now expanded to include perceived bias against Western Australian's.

I guess India must have been in on the nsw conspiracy when haze and Cummins rolled them a fortnight ago...?
Mate Pattinson and Boland would have rolled them for 35.

Hey, don't tar us with the same brush as smasha.

At worst he will be a very good test player , maybe and hopefully better than that .

Solid technique , very good range of shots, like the way he dictates the pace of his innings and bats within himself.
Its exciting because its the first time in a few years imo a batter has come in without a glaring 2-3 weakness's in their game .

I would be moving him to 5 now and give him a decent run at it.

After 1 good inning you would be moving him to 5?

Just let the kid play jeez.

Yes but not based on that 1 good innings per say.
I'm basing it on how he plays in comparison to the other options which they aren't many.

Blooding him at 6 is great in a decent line up , he has been in with the score under 100 each innings anyway. Bumping him up 1 spot isn't a major difference.

I think he's been a little bit impatient with his bowling. Understandable early in his career, he'll improve with time. Tends to bowl a bunch of different balls every over. His bouncer in particular does not look threatening. He'd be better off just hitting a good fullish length every ball and trying to dot them up. Wickets will come eventually, doesn't need to chase them.

Spot on. I don't think the spells or timing of his spells has always helped, but he has to find his stock ball.

Yeah agree. Most of his first class wickets have been caught in the cordon with full balls either swinging or seaming away. It's like he thinks he needs to play a different role in the test team.

on the abc he was saying he basically gets two overs and if he doesn’t generate a wicket or edge he is off.

I know he is restricted but he needs a better run of 3-4 overs. The reason he is bowling so any different things is that he is under pressure to make an impact.

it’s poor captaincy basically treating him like a part timer - which he is not. Labs gets two overs because he might bowl pies and is a genuine part timer.

I'm not sure why some people are getting on the case that he isn't bowling that much right now. He's in the team as a batsman and is being managed after coming back from stress fractures in his back. He's bowling is a bonus, gives the quicks a short rest and he's managed to tie up an end pretty well so far. This isn't an obsession about allrounders. He's shown enough potential with the bat to earn a national team spot.

I think he's shown enough so far this summer to put him on a plane to South Africa.
